Twon's Frostmaw Ogres (now w/ more Nurgle!)

original thread ↗

Greetings.

I going to start a little gnoblog here. This will mainly be about the modeling and painting of my army as opposed to background stories and the like.

The name of my Ogre tribe is the Frostmaw Tribe. These Ogres live at high altitudes. I am a native Vermonter (currently living in NY, I know its a sin) and have a thing for snow. I really wanted to play around with some snow bases and cold/frozen looking flesh. The Ogres have a purple/blue looking skin tone to represent being in the freezing cold for generations.

I'm currently scratch building a Tyrant to try my hand at some serious greenstuff work. Pics to shortly follow. =D

Hope you all enjoy.

Positive and constructive feedback is always welcome =D

Okay. First pictures up. I started taking photos a little into the project but not too far.

Just to give you an idea of where this is going. I plan on having the peg leg smashing some poor guys head on a rock while a little gnoblar tugs on the dead guys like, trying to drag a little piece back if he is lucky. I also plan on having the other arm outstretched holding a head or skull of kind*

*Subject to change

Enjoy.

I thought I'd have a little fun with my camera and create some fast moving little videos of working with the greenstuff. Sort of a greenstuff time lapse if you will.

Thanks for stopping by.

I'm not a fan of over the top weapons (which is a bit hypocritical if you'd see some of the abominations I've made - and we're not talking about the skaven kind)

The sculpting is excellent though and I'ld love to see it finished and painted.

Now all we need is the 7th edition rule that said if the models are killed they don't get to fight and we WOULD be a broken army! lol

Nice work on the muscle sculpting + veins. Piratical peg leg too! Looking forward to the finished painting. Tattoos??

Keep up the good work,

Tattoos??

Yessir. Not sure what yet as I haven't decided on a symbol for the Frostmaw tribe. It will come in time I'm sure.

Well. It is a Thundermace. Anything that hits like a stone thrower better be massive =D

Thanks for the comments.

This is a link to the exact set that I purchased about 2 weeks ago. I am in no way affiliated with this person, but it was a good price, pretty fast shipping and pleasant to work with.

This image is from a different set from another website but basically the same shapes. The 3rd and 4th I find the most useful, especially the back side of the 4th for muscle and other organic shapes. They say "firm" but when you first feel them they feel really soft, almost like they won't push green stuff around at all but that is exactly what you need. A real soft touch goes a long way.

I wish I could tell you there was a secret. I've always had a fair bit of natural artistic talent. I just start with a general idea of what I want. Mush an amount of greenstuff that feels right in some resemblance of the shape I want and just keep gently pushing it around till it looks good.

It is easier that it may seem at first, especially with muscles as they can be really any shape. If you keep at is sooner or later you will hit something that looks "right" then you just have to tweak it.

Happy sculpting.

More work done on this guy. I'm just slowly adding little bits on here and there.

Todays thought: Hands are tough!

I built the left arm in the pose I wanted. Used a layer of some grey stuff (not sure the make) to fill it out. Once cured I layered on some muscles.

I was originally thinking of having him hold some sort of head. As I was playing around with it a human head was way too small. An Ogre head might be cool but I really wanted to show him destroying his enemies. I then though maybe a torso of some poor sap. Digging through the bits box I found a Brettonian lord on horse my mother got me a year or so ago.

Side story here, my mom wanted to get me some miniatures for my Birthday last year, so I gave her a link to some models I wanted. She got those, then also clicked around and thought she'd randomly choose a few for me (god bless her, she tried.).

So since I had this horse laying around and it was about the right size off came its head. I think it also shows some sign of strength as ripping off a horses head would require a great deal of strength.

I had a bit of a time getting the fingers on the right hand the way I wanted them. I sculpted them all at once. They wouldn't say in place when pressure was applied to get the details. This time on the left hand I made little, well, for lack of a better word, bones. Once cured I could layer a small amount of greenstuff on top to and make details without the fingers just mushing under the pressure.

Hope you enjoy =D

Well its official. I am clearly a hobby gamer, not a tourney gamer. If I were would I have clearly overlooked such important things as true line of sight? This guy is an absolute giant. Mind you the angle isn't the greatest but I think it shows his immense mass.

This was my first attempt at anything as detailed as a face. Relatively happy with it. He is going to have a helmut and some teeth soon. Not exactly sure what type of headgear he is going to wear. I'm willing to accept ideas.

Honestly, his size, it's almost comedic. =D

First, the scratch built Tyrant with more man boobs.

And in all his glory next to an Irongut and Rhinox rider.

Enjoy.

I also started working on a scratch built scraplauncher. I got the idea from mareck (click http://www.ogrestronghold.com/forum/index.php?topic=16879.0 to see his post) by using sprue bits. I then made little platforms out of 3/4" balsa wood strips.

I plan on using some boars from the new boar boy kits for the gnoblars, well, I guess just because.

The scrappy.

I wanted to make it look like the little guy is being blown off the back.

The start of the rope that will be holding the whole thing together.

Enjoy.

I can't get over how smooth and shiney the GS is on the Tyrant  , it is an unbelievable skill to get it that smooth, I don't think I've ever seen it like that.

If I was to offer critique other than just saying it's awesome, which it is, and I'm not a GS technician like yourself, but the Gutplate and metal bits on the Mace look a little too rounded and smooth (if there is such a thing) almost more cartoon-like than 'realistic'.
Nit-picking for the sake of it, but maybe it helps.

Scrappy is coming on nicely, bit confused when you say you're using the Boars from the BBz as Gnoblars though?  :?

Clayshapers my friend. Clayshapers. Well, that and some spit. That sounds dirty. Saliva. That still sounds dirty, but less so.

Well, clearly I can type as well as I can talk. Last night during a game I kept calling my Gnoblars Gorgers. I meant Boars for the Rhinox.

As far as the metal bits you are 100% correct. I haven't really finished it yet. Adding little bits at a time till I am happy. Truth be told I'll probably get carried away and he'll eventually look like the junkyard lady from Labyrinth.

Thanks for the comments. =D

Man you are really rocking that green stuff! But im super pleased to finally find some inspiration for the scrap launcher i was going to conver. Im thinkin of buying the orc boar chariot and just building on top of it. And i have to steal your idea for the cannon-gnoblar, thats just too funny not to have! im looking forward to seeing the finished scraplauncher!

Keep up the good work.

I'll have to look into getting some, it looks like all the good sculpters use them, I have plenty of spit already  ;)

I thought you meant for the Rhinox, but visioned some strange Boar typed Gnoblar shizzle

Good to hear about the metals, looking forward to seeing more  :)

If I can suggest an idea, on page 10 of the book, it talks about pit fighting, and they mention that some ogres use "bladed helmets" I would love to see that guy with some sort of bladed helmet (Maybe it would have tusk like sides, or maybe it would have an iron plume.:))

And strange moons circle through the skies
But stranger still is lost Carcosa."

Its funny you should mention that. I was actually thinking of making something like the one the Orc is wearing in the lower left of the first illustration in the new rule book (the one with the giant fighting a griffon).

In a few days we'll see ;D

Well some more updates. The scraplauncher is coming along as is the Tyrant. Every time I add something to him I realize there is still one more little bit to add somewhere else. Maybe one day I'll finish him ;D

And for the scraplauncher. Not sure if I want to make the boars look like little Rhinox or leave them as boars.

I have to protest the nipple piercing, but that's just my opinion. I'd give him some chest armor instead. But the awesome scraplauncher is... awesome.

Figured I'd put up a group shot. This was taken at adepticon this year, so a bit before the new book, its my 3k list.

I went a little crazy with the new book and toys, don't tell my wife

And yes, my tomato soup is inspired by Skragg.

Anyway, onto the real reason I'm posting here. I've always wanted to make a chaos/Nurgle ogre, however I didn't really have a place for it, well I've come up with a reason. The maneater that spent too much time in the Chaos Wastes, papa Nurgle saw fit to adjust him a bit.

Yes, he is puking his own guts, into his gut, which are then spilling out behind him. Yeah, my wife thinks I'm crazy, a little disturbed... she might be right.

I've put a base coat on it, don't worry, the colors are pulled back nicely with a wash and the highlighting will make it much less pastel.

Looks good! Nice ideas with the Nurgle Maneater, thats why I love Chaos: You come up with a totally bizarre idea, but Chaos can get it done. ;)
Your purchase looks almost exactly as mine did, one less Stonehorn and no Tomato Soup ( :>() for me.
