Ogres vs. Warriors of Chaos: A Complete Bloodbath

original thread ↗

Hi gang

I played my first battle with the big guys last night, a 2250 pts battle against Warriors of Chaos. Here is a quick report from that game.

My army was as follows:
Tyrant (Tenderizer, 5+ ward armour, Mawseeker)
Slaughtermaster (4+ ward talisman)
Battle Standard Bearer (4+ ward talisman)
Butcher (Dispel scroll, wyrdstone necklace)
5 Ironguts (banner w/lookout, musician, Runemaw)
5 Ironguts (banner w/lookout, musician)
3 Ironguts (banner w/lookout, musician)
3 Bulls (Ogre Clubs, banner w/lookout, musician)
8 Halfling Trappers (No gnoblars for me!)
2 Ledbelchers with musician
2 Ledbelchers with musician
Gorger
Maneater (Heavy armour, brace of handguns)

My opponent brought:
Lvl 4 Tzeench wizard (spell familiar, 4+ ward)
Lvl 2 Tzeench wizard (puppet, 5+ ward, disc)
Battle Standard og Tzeench (Daemonic steed, 4+ ward, Sword of Might)
23 Tzeench marauders (full command, hand weapons and shields)
12 Tzeench Chaos Warriors (full command, hand weapons and shields)
6 Marauder Horsemen (musician, flails, throwing axes)
6 Marauder Horsemen (musician, flails, throwing axes)
6 Warhounds
6 Warhounds
Chariot
4 Ogres (GW, Chaos Armour)

I deployed heavily on one flank, with belchers on each flank, Tyrant and BSB in the large IG units and the slaughter master in a small IG unit, Butcher in the bulls.

I got the first turn, and moved as if to threaten a flank with the warriors and chariot with BSB‘s iron guts and slaughter master‘s iron guts. Ledbelchers give it to the marauder horsemen on both flanks, killing four in one unit but only two in the other.

The slaughtermaster and butcher get a couple of spells off in the first turn, and in the second the tyrant and his iron guts tried to charge the chaos ogres, hoping to then get to the marauder block and the lvl 4 wizard. The charge was short, and to add insult to injury the slaughtermaster miscast his first spell, on two dice. He rolled a 2 on the miscast table, which the puppet turned to a 1, killing the slaughtermaster and wounding the butcher. I hate the puppet so much.

The Chaos ogres charged the Tyrant & Co, and got cut down to size for their troubles. After being loved tenderly by the tenderizer and the Iron guts there was one chaos ogre left with 1 wound. It needed a 3 to stand, and of course rolled a 3, preventing the tyrant from greeting his lvl 4 in the formal ogre way.

I ended up sacrificing the belchers, maneater and finally the gorger to keep his chaos knights out of the game long enough for me to get a charge with the depleted Iron guts and Tyrant into the marauders and the lvl 4, but not before the lvl 4 tried to kill them with the Gateway. Fortunately the halfling trappers were nearby, and the rune maw made sure they regretted that decision.

I killed lots of marauders, and the champion gave up maximum overkill in the challenge against the tyrant. I was, however, down to two iron guts in that combat. He took a break test, stubborn on leadership 8 with a re-roll. And failed. I rolled my pursuit, 5“, cursed, until he rolled a 3“ flee move.

After that the game was pretty much over, most of my ogres had been sacrificed or blasted into oblivion by now. In his 5th turn he charged his cavalry into my last remaining combat worthy Iron Guts unit, at the time 4 strong with BSB and Tyrant. That turned out to be the last thing his cavalry did, and his single remaining knight fled the field.

In the end I had one remaining ogre left from the tyrant‘s IG unit, and the BSB‘s IG unit was depleted but still there. My Tyrant and BSB also survived. Everything else was gone.

Fortunately my opponent had lost even more, and had only his (untouched) warriors, his horsemen (much depleted), war hounds and chariot, along with the lvl 2 on the disk. A victory for the Ogres, but a complete bloodbath.

I like the Ogres in the new edition. They are still prone to horrible bad luck (at one time my BSB and Iron Guts were 10" from the enemy they wanted to charge, and rolled snake-eyes), and will die in droves, but at least I feel I have a chance of taking the other guy with me!

I did not get a good test game for the slaughtermaster. Killing himself in the second turn was unfortunate, but something we should expect every once in a while. Or quite frequently against the puppet-loving chaos warriors...
nice fight..... good recon.
i have yet to try out my magic ogres in 8th so it's nice to see what to expect.

you'll get them next time; this is just training.

Cool report, that was indeed a bloody game.
