Tyrant + 1 GW Maneater idea

original thread ↗

I've been letting this idea run around in my head for a few days and I wanted to see what you guys thought.

What about running the super-defensive tyrant with 1 great-weapon maneater ranked up behind him?  This would essentially be like adding 4 Str7 attacks to your nearly un-killable Tyrant.

The obvious weaknesses are:
1. Getting flanked - but this always is a losing situation
2. shooting/magic missiles could kill the Maneater - would the opponent see this unit as a prime target? I would think that most would focus attacks on that unit of ironguts with the slaughtermaster in it.
3. I have been running my Tyrant with Greyback Pelt, so I would hate to lose the advantage of moving freely thru terrain if he were on his own.

What do you guys think?
Why 4 Sr7 attacks?

Isn't support attacks made on basic S without weapon bonus?

No, but you are only allowed 3 attacks. You still use your GW or whatever equipment the model has.
Why ranked up behind?

Don't you need three models to make a rank?
It's not for the rank bonus.

Maneater is there for Stubborn and when he is standing in the second rank behind Tyrant he will survive much better 'cause no one can hit him in combat from front.

this works in theory, the maneater isnt getting hit, and the tyrant if given the glittering scale/pelt /cls arangment cant be hit by most things.

however against a rank and file unit you might face getting taken out by combat resoulation, simply because of how many ranked units your going up against.

id consider building a nice deathstar with maneaters, front rank with cls , back with gw's
maybe in a smaller game with 1 Bruiser and a Maneater this may work... less big units to worry about.  once you get up to 1000 points you're not gonna be able to deal as there will be so much stuff out there..

i like the idea, though... pretty sneaky.

My other army is HE (somefatkid ducks ), so i am constantly thinking about what I would do as ogres to handle the high elves.  I have equipped my Tyrant with CLS, heavy armor, trickster's helm, greyback pelt, and mawseeker -- which makes him WS7 & -1 to hit, T6 & wounds must be rerolled, 4+ ASv.  I did a little Mathhammer and came up with this if the Tyrant charged the horde.

Stand & shoot: 35 shots, hitting on 5's b/c of single model = 12 hits
Str3 vs T6 = 6's to wound = 2 wounds, then rerolled = 1/3 wounds
4+ ASv makes this just about a 1/6 chance to wound him ----WOW!!!

LSG 20 attacks (4 in BtB * 5 ranks = 20 attacks)
20 swings hitting on 5's = 7 hits
wounding on 6's = >1 wound, then rerolled = 1/6 wounds
4+ ASv = 1/12 chance of wounding him --- yes, more WOW!!!

Don't forget to make them take their fear check which they will probably pass, but its worth a shot!

Then you swing back and get an average 5 wounds from bull charge + 5 attacks + stomp and you just won or possibly tied yourself a combat.

5 wounds + charge = CR 6
vs.
3 ranks + banner + probably warbanner + probably BSB = CR 6

I know this seems like a risky thing.  The truth is that it is risky.  The dice gods could frown on you (which it seems they are more likely to do when 50 dice are being rolled) and your tyrant could just die.  Or you could whiff and lose combat by 4 or 5.  However, we are talking about a 311 pt unit holding up a 600 pt unit indefinitely, and giving us a great shot at getting reinforcements into their flanks which will end the combat very quickly (no supporting attacks into the flanks  )

I posted this yesterday on another topic, but it also applies here.  The thought is that this unit could act as a tarpit for even the worst of hordes.  With the Maneater attached, i become much more vulnerable to stand and shoot though.
Where are you getting 5 impact hits from one Tyrant  :?

sorry -- I meant an average of 5 wounds from the combined 1 impact hit + 5 attacks + 1 stomp
Going to be a little weird to deploy.  Deploy units first, so lone maneater goes out.  Then have to add the tyrant to the unit, and he needs to go in the front rank (not become the front rank), so to get the maneater behind him will require a reform.

I haven't had a chance to try it yet. But my tentative plans is to have My tyrant General and BSB as the front rank to a unit of 2 maneaters.  This will allow my hero/lord to handle the attacks and add 6 str 7 attacks to the mix.  Loading up the tyrant for kill potential and the BSB for defense I think it could work very well.  The tyrant alone is to easy of a target IMO but maybe it would work.
People tried similar tactics in 7th. I still think this is a waste of 90pts and a rare slot but ... maybe I will be proved wrong?

could work, especially now that there are no longer slots that will be wasted.

I like the Tyrant/BSB/2 ME combo idea.

you could give the Tyrant the Greyback pelt, Glittering scales, and Gold sigel sword. Give the BSB Dueling blades. both are neigh impossable to hit and the MEs will dish out some pain.

90 points for 3x S7 attacks, stubborn, few extra wounds (not nessessacry a good thing in this case) and ITP (50% of the unit have it so that means the unit gets it, right?).....as long as you can stop the ME being attacked then sounds like a decent deal.
