Bill's Gnoblog - Ma the Great

original thread ↗

I have waited too long to start this.  School isn't out yet, and I'm still wound way to tight about it right now (even though I have most things wrapped up), so I figured I'd take a bit of time to do a little assembly.

I put together my yeti.  When I saw these figures a few weeks ago I knew it was time to finally start the Ogres.  They're really very nice figures.  I was commenting to somebody today that even though they're going to "suck" in the next edition I still have to do them because they're so cool.

They need a bit of gap filling, and I'm terrible at finding all the mold lines on the first (an second  ) pass, so will do a bit more clean-up.  The (full scale) picture made a few of the flaws obvious to me.

BTW, Those are magnetic bases.  I think I'm going to see if I can stomach the costs of just buying them for this army.  DIY is cheaper, but the premade ones are really really nice.

Tournament this weekend, and a test next week.  So I don't expect a lot of progress in the next few days.  However, one of the things I'm trying to figure out is how to make the army stand out: evil clown faces, some other variation of face-paint, or tattoos.  Not sure what to do there.  That's the advantage of painting the yeti first, I don't have to make up my mind about the ogres yet.

Thanks for looking.

Day one of the tournament today.  I brought about 130 Orcs & Goblins, all walking on their own two feet (as Gork and Mork intended).  I went 2-1.

First game was v.s. Ogres: 5 bulls & a butcher, 5 guts & a tyrant (tenderizer, spangleshard and something else), 5 more guts and a butcher, some maneaters, trappers, 2 rhinox riders & 3 yetis.  The rhinox went for my squigs and that took them out of the battle.  Yetis were on war machine duty.  The rest of my army went after the main force and they couldn't really stand up to the big'uns & black orcs (units of about 25 each).  The regular'uns (23 of them) took out the maneaters with a little help from the giant (before they took him down -- they're darn good at it).

My warboss actually lived through a round of combat in a challenge with the tyrant.  I was proud.

2nd game animosity reared its ugly head and my army sat immobile for two turns while I was being out-generalled.

3d game was the other guys turn to have rotten rotten luck.  Orcs cleaned up on the dwarfs, which was a shock to me.

I've got to to focus on the test for Thursday after the tournament ends tomorrow, but I hope to find some time to work on the Yetis.

Those yhetees look great.  How's the scale?
You're all just Food..

Nice.  That's a nice looking model.
Those are the Crocodile Games yhetees, aren't they?
As for the ogres, a non-standard skin tone is a good way to set make them unique without much fuss.

They're the Wendigo chieftains from the Crocodile games.  Its a pretty cool little range of minis.  The abominable snowman looks really cool, but he's crazy expensive.

I was thinking of a pale skin tone.  Maybe like the Skorne in Hordes.  Speaking of which, if I ever go Hunter, I think I found my cats.

Day two of the tournament.  Got wiped by VC and Chaos.  I wasn't able to press an early advantage against the VC and they ground me down.  The chaos one was a draw until the last turn, combat went bad and it turned to a loss.  Both players were really good generals and everybody I played this weekend was a metric-ton of fun.

BTW, this was at the Buckeye Battles.  http://www.buckeyebattles.com

Also, I forgot to ask.  I'm trying to figure out alternatives to the GW gorger.  Any suggestions?
My Gnoblog
i used the lotr stone troll body and legs with parts from a metal kit i found called ' hideous troll' , ill try and find the link to him .

edit :

found the image..its from a miniture set called 'heresy'

I'll bet that looks pretty good.

I'm considering two different types.  First up are the swamp troll and then the frost troll from privateer press.  The other option is two of the giant kelt barbarians from confrontation.

I also thought about putting Ogre heads on minotaur bodies, that and a heap o' greenstuff.  One issue with that though is that I'm never satisfied with the end result of me attempting to greenstuff something.

Test is tomorrow night.  So want to paint!
My Gnoblog
Did a bit of gap filling with greenstuff (GS) and cleaned off a few more mold-lines.  Wanted to wash/prime, but should have washed before putting the GS on.  Oh well.
My Gnoblog
I gave a mate of mine my two left over Gorger heads and he put them on Rat Ogre bodies, worked out pretty good I think.
Actions speak louder than words, unless your eating a mime of course.
That's a good suggestion.  All of my rat ogres have paint on them though.   :D  I loves my rat ogres.

I rinsed and then primed the yetis, and then I started painting.  yay!

I started with a base coat of Frostbite, and then I started working very thin Exile Blue into the recessed areas of the fur.  After that I started with Menoth White onto raised areas of the fur and tips of the fur too.  I hope to paint more and snap some pictures tomorrow.

I also picked up the rules tonight.  Finally!

Thanks for reading.
My Gnoblog
Washed them with a mix of dark blue and black, and then started bring them back up again.  Underbelly Blue->Frostbite->White.  Needs more work with the Frostbite & White.

I snapped a quick picture of them with my cellphone.  First is just a profile, and the second is them scaling dangerous terrain!

Thanks for reading!

Looking good, keep it up!
Thanks!

Read about half of the rules this weekend.  Club is getting together tomorrow night (and I'm not to busy to go for a change!).  I proposed 800 point learning games and we've got a number of people on board.  Should be fun.

I think switch to much thinner white on the yetis to try to get them to a more whitish cast w/o losing the blue entirely.  Wish me luck.
My Gnoblog
do you guys really think the GW gorger is that bad you're going to use trolls instead?

okay i know it's pose looks like it's about to get a high five but other than that it's a pretty good model. also the troll models are fat and the whole point of gorgers is that they have NO GUT...

(if you don't like trolls, is that racist? )
if anyone is interested at the idea of RPGs please vote in this poll

Yes!

Anyway, played two small games tonight and watched a few others.  Tons of fun, so many new possibilities.

Working the fur...
My Gnoblog
Got the fur up to about the same level for all three last night before playing a 1,250 game of warhammer.

Orcs v.s. skaven.  I had 2 units of boyz, unit of night goblins fully loaded, , 10 spider riders, chariot, bolt throwers, trolls, NG shaman and orc bigboss.  He had 2 units of clanrats, engineer, queek and a queek-upgraded unit of storm-vermin.

Fanatics and night goblins put the beat-down on one of the units of clanrats.  Warp lightning miscast took out my unit of spider riders (panic), sucked the engineer into the warp, and about 20 more clanrats.  Queek and the storm-vermin chopped their way through trolls, a unit of boyz and the bigboss.  The panic from that almost sent my other unit of boyz off the table, but they recovered, waaaghed over the hill and charged the storm vermin, beat them by two and ran them down ending the game.

Lessons learned: Queek + upgraded storm vermin are nasty! Bound items are good now with the ability to throw dice behind them.  Nibbla's itty ring almost took out Queek.  This was the scenario where you play the table lengthwise, its really hard to get around the enemy in this one.
My Gnoblog
Base coated and shaded the skin.  I try to paint about 80% of the highlight value as the base coat, and then start shading with the darkest color shadow  Next time will look for places I missed and clean them up.  After that I will work back into the highlights with a mix of the shadow color and the lighter color.

Thanks for looking!
My Gnoblog
Worked the flesh tonight.  Blended the shading back up into the main color, and added a bit of highlighting.  Still need a bit of highlighting on it, but I am really pleased with the way its coming out.  I got excited by the prospect of the horns, teeth and nails so I went on to that, and got the dark base color that I want.  Just need to highlight them up.

Also including a back shot.  Just look at those fantastic butts!

My Gnoblog
Oh, and I almost forgot.  I finally took the plunge!

Happy birthday to me!

So, looking at the Tyrant's arms.  Do you think I can get away with magnetizing them?  I can see the great weapon holding since the weight would be distributed, but what about the single weapons?
My Gnoblog
an idea might be to magantise him at the wrist, saw through the model and magnatise it there.
that way your only taking the weight of the weapon and fists.
So, these Ogres have been finished for quite some time now. A year and a half now, they've been staring at me; patiently waiting. I finally bought the new book; I have assembled more Ogres, and they will soon see the field. We're starting an escalation league, and I'm going to field 500 points of Ogres to begin with. My goal is to have 1000 points for Adepticon.

We don't have to have a character at the 500 point level, so I'm going to start with this list.

8 Ogres, iron fists + full command
4 Lead belchers
1 Sabertusk
1 Sabertusk

Which is exactly 500 points to tenderize my opponents for the after battle BBQ.

I will post pictures of the Ogres; and then also start the belchers.

Cheers!
My Gnoblog
Well, so we ended up needing legal lists after all.  :P No rares, some other restrictions that don't mean much to Ogres.

I took:
Firebelly; extra hand weapon
5 Ogres; full command
1 Sabertusk
2 Mournfang; champ w/pistol, musician and iron fists

I have made some progress painting the mournfang, and I even magnetized the pistol. ooohh fancy!

I faced some Skaven tonight. Tusk was on my left opposite two packs of giant rats, everything else was on the right. Turn 1 the sabertusk does a lateral move and went center. Everything else sat tight. Attempt to fry rat Ogres failed.

Turn 2; The tusk charged the ratling gun, and it blew itself up. So failed charge. I fried one of two rat Ogres with a fireball and they ran away.  The MF charged a unit of slaves and started grinding them down.

In the bottom half of the turn a unit of clanrats charged the tusk and I didn't want to flee and take the risk of panicking my Ogres and Firebelly if the cat ran through them; so it held. Small unit of storm vermin with chieftan flanked the MF. They all wiffed, and the MF trampled a few slaves and a warplock engineer, and they won the combat. The slaves exploded killing a stormvermin or two and the stormvermin broke, and were chased down. The MF then ran into the flank of the unit fighting the cat and that combat started. Many clanrats died and they broke and ran too.

Now that I think about it, this was my first game w/Ogre Kingdoms. Woo!

Many of the pictures from when I first started the army (long time) ago where of the not-quite finished models. So I want to get some updated pictures out there of the old units, and of the new.

First, updates on the old ones:

Next, the new...

This is my first gorger (sounds like a nice toy for a lil' tyke!)

These are started, but set aside for now

And all of the models that I own for the army.

Battle report: http://www.ogrestronghold.com/forum/index.php?topic=24157.msg322684#msg322684

My first big game!  (2k)  Good times.
My Gnoblog
First off, I bought and assembled the pirate man-eater. I also bought 4 ironguts, and assembled eight of them. I also green stuffed the ginormous gaps that the arms leave when they're assembled. I also green stuffed the rather large gaps in the spawn mother (my other gorger), and I put green stuff on the cat's left front arm. The join there left large v-shaped divots. Finally I assembled the butcher, and his arm promptly fell off the next day. There's also new a 4x1 movement tray for the man-eaters too.

This evening I worked on the flesh for the firebelly, and I did the MF cavalry since they were also primed. Its actually quite close to the figures I did originally (more than a year and a half ago now). With a bit of touch up I should be able to get it closer.

My Gnoblog
I've played three more games. These were 900 point games with a watch-tower like scenario. Scouting maneaters were great. They held the high elf white lions + hero off in one game (with support from ogres, yhetee, and gorger). They were burned out the building by warpfire the second game (after a doomwheel ran roughshod over the army), and then they managed to get another skaven force to pile up and never make it to the tower. The second skaven force was also looking to run through my army with its doomwheel, but it splintered when it tried to smoke my ogres off the face of the Olde World.
My Gnoblog
Nice looking army.
Those yetis are great!
Also like the shark-man.
Thanks! The gorger and yeti are sort of unfortunate outliers in an otherwise great line. I think it was when I found the Wendigo chieftain that I decided to finally do Ogres.
My Gnoblog
Ironguts, sabertusks, other gorger and maneaters primed this evening, and a three-pass on the flesh of the guts and maneaters (base, shade & highlight).

Hope to knock out a basic paint job on the guts tomorrow.
My Gnoblog
Look forward to seeing them :)
Ogre Achivements 10/101
Thanks for the encouragement.

I'm having trouble with the guts. I have their armor all nice and dirty and rusted. The problem is the focal point, either the face or the upraised arms in front of the face, is now quite dark and they are really suffering because of it. I can try to put more silver on there, but I'm afraid to lose too much of the rust texture. Not sure what to do here.

BTW, that new textured orange-brown from GW is FANTASTIC for doing rust.
My Gnoblog
Had the Ironguts painted enough to use in Friday's 1k at adepticon, although they were not completely done. Didn't end up doing the event. I had other things to get ready for the weekend. To use them and the barely painted  (about half painted and about half basecoated), I would have had to base them in a hurry and that would have been too hard to fix. Not to mention I had other things to finish for Sat/Sunday and I didn't want to overdo it for the weekend.
My Gnoblog
Got a 2,200 point tournament coming up, and I'm thinking of running this. I want to try flying the firebelly up and breathing fire, although it just occurred to me that that might not be so effective. Can he fly 20" (march) and breath?   :|

The breath weapon rule (p. 67 BRB) says that you can march and use a breath weapon. W00t!
My Gnoblog
Here's a quick survey of progress since the last update. The guts are 'done enough' for usage, but not really done at all. The rusty blade in the first picture is just a simple application of the orange-brown textured GW paint. Easy rust.

My Gnoblog
I got a bit of work done on the iron blaster this evening. The rhinox and the giant horn things in particular.
My Gnoblog
More maneaters!

In part, because of frustrations with the finecast models, and in part because I want to trample the enemy under a wall of gribbly man-eater flesh. I'm converting some maneaters. First off, I chopped some ironguts at the legs at the bottom of the pants, and inserted some greenstuff blobs to make them all taller.

Next, I just started blocking some forms out, and then working on some details.

On the left is dwarf slayer maneater. His mohawk is pretty much done. The head of the unattached ax is completely sculpted, and the other ax is the stone hammer with a bit of an ax blade sculpted on. He's going to get a beard, but first I have to glue on his gut plate, and before I do that, I have to finish his feet. I spent an hour-plus carving away the bits that didn't look like feet with an exacto knife this evening. His pant-bottoms will be sculpted so it looks like they're torn.

Next is pit-fighter man eater. The net is just cheesecloth over a grey-stuff base, the helmet facemask is a real simple sculpt. This evening I roughed in some fancy boot tops to cover up the greenstuff blob leg-stretchers. He's the simplest of them all, but so far he's the best.

On the right is Bretonian man-eater. The lance is just the standard with the pointy tip cut off the bottom and glued on the top. The hand-guard is grey stuff. It was sculpted in one evening, then spent another evening filing it down and trimming it, next up will add more grey-stuff to give it a smooth appearance. The face mask on the helmet is pretty basic. It needs more work, but I'm not sure how to proceed. He will probably also get fancy boot tops like the other two.

This picture shows the height difference, and a profile shot of centurion maneater. The helmet brush thingy is just roughed out, as is its just the basic form that will be underneath the eventual sculpted part. I think I'm going to give him a cape, possibly held on by some fancy shoulder doodles.

Thanks for looking!

Your ironblaster is looking great! Finish it yet? I have one waiting to be painted right now and need some inspiration.
Let me get the camera!
My Gnoblog
Here you go. I had kind of gotten to a point with this model that I couldn't really continue to paint it. So I forced myself to get it to a reasonable level and then just kind of stopped. I might get back to it. So the Ogre himself is lacking detail and parts of the blaster are a bit meh. Overall its a decent enough job though.
My Gnoblog
Nice work! Looks better than decent and I bet it looks awesome on the table.
The Ironblaster is a pain, I probably shouldn't have assembled mine, because it is not easy to get to some areas. I've had to break the driver off already.
Actions speak louder than words, unless your eating a mime of course.
So long since this has been updated. I owe everybody some pictures.
