Wow, this was a really fun game just thinking back on it. Great opponent makes all the difference
Terrain had hills in each of our deployment zones that were largely ignored. Forests pretty much dead center of each flank.
I deployed my bull horde dead center. Ironguts right next to them. gnoblars behind. I put tyrant in with Bulls and the BSB & SM in with the guts. I deployed a unit of 2 LBs and 1 ME on each flank. scraplauncher was behind my hill.
He deployed all of his archers, warriors, black orcs, and troll right dead center across from me. this was going to be bloody. he deployed savage orcs, boar boyz, chariot, and goblin doom diver all on my left flank.
I got first turn and marched forward. I will note here that we both absolutely loved the magic phase in 8e. Each magic phase never lasted more than 2-3 minutes as compared to what seemed to always drag on in 7e. That being said, he shut down my magic phase pretty handily b/c he had a banner that gave him dispel dice equal to the number of ranks in the unit. I shot with everyone's BoH and they were worthless. I was hoping for much more. At least they would help later in combat! The scraplauncher scattered 8 inches but still was right in the thick of his army and killed 4 or 5 boyz. That pie plate is awesome!
He failed some animosity tests his turn 1 and pretty much stayed put. the doomdiver missed me. I used MR(4) on the bulls to reduce magic missile casualties to 1. I also redirected another direct damage spell with the runemaw banner on the ironguts unit to the gnobs. poor gnobs.
Turn 2 I decide to get this show on the road. I charge with guts and the horde in the middle. Guts need 6 to make their charge into the archers and make it but they flee. I redirect into a lone shaman left of them. He decides to sacrifice him to keep his savage orcs from getting bull charged so the shaman holds. The bull horde also needs a 6 to make their charge, but I roll a 2. Doh! The only magic i get off is braingobbler on the boar boyz poised to flank my guts unit on the left and he fails and flees. Yay! I shoot again and hit again with the scraplauncher and do a few more wounds. my leadbelchers and maneater who were lonely on my right flank move up and shoot at the flanks of some black orcs and kill a few. The leadbelchers and maneater on my left stand guard keeping the chariot at bay. i kill the shaman in combat and pursue headlong into the savage orcs. bad idea!!!
Bottom 2 He calls a WAAAGGHHH and moves all of his troops closer to my horde. Then they all try to charge. I think only a unit of black orcs makes it on the front. Magic phase he rolls boxcars and generates 12 PD to my 6 DD. Uhh ohh. At this point im thinking at least I have a scroll. He rolls the big giant stomp on you spell on my maneater on the right and I decide to let it go in fear of the other dice. 1 Maneater dead. I had big plans for him tarpitting to protect the right flank of my horde, too! Then he decides to throw like 8 dice at his WAAAGH spell. ohhh you know, the one that gives a free movement phase, ASF to everyone, and reroll to hit rolls. He rolls loss of control double 6's. We decided to use the new loss of control table and he rolled a 6 which put the small template of str4(?) hits on his shaman and only a couple died. However, in the ensuing combat, all of my ironguts on the left died and the BSB and the SM fled away but made it. 10 Bulls died. Yes, 10! He had a unit of black orcs in their front, another unit of black orcs in their right flank and a unit of archers in their front. reroll to hit was brutal. I attacked back and killed some but lost combat by something like 21. I fled and got away with them too!!! Im still alive!!!!
Turn 3
I rally all of my fleeing heroes. Magic gets trollguts off on my SM and braingobbler on the goblin doomdiver and they flee. My SM and BSB were sadly far from the horde that had fled and would not be able to get back close enough to them to support with magic and the banner for the rest of the game. His chariot had been forced to come through the woods after my LBs on the left during the WAAA on the previous turn and took some wounds. I was able to shoot it up a lil more with the leadbelchers to leave it with one wound. Scraplauncher shoots, scatters and kills more. Prolly fifteen kills total by turn 3.
Bottom 3
boar boyz continue to flee right off the table. He turns trolls and a unit of boyz to my left flank and the other unit of warriors toward my right flank to take out the LBs He charges both black orc units right back into the remnants of the bull horde and kills 4 more bulls, so the horde is down to 4. I lose this combat by another multiple digit number. I started to think it might be time to throw in the towel. I was toast. But then I remembered, I'm an ogre player now. Ogres dont ride off into the sunset. So I did what I decided any ogre would do. I took off my shirt and rolled snake eyes, insane courage!!!(man i sure hope this is still in 8e. Even if its not, I will keep this moment near my heart)
Top 4 (my gorger finally gets on the table and chased a mage around the whole game, but couldnt ever catch him)
CHARGE!! I charge into the big fight with my gnobs and the scraplauncher. The BSB and SM charge back into the unit of savage orcs on my left. my left maneater charges his trolls that had headed that way to possibly stall them.
the leadbelchers on the left finish off the chariot with a charge and the LBs on the right hide from the oncoming huge unit of orc boyz. There are a ton of casualties in combat. The big combat ends up with him winning by 1 and everyone holds. I win and break the savages on the left due to T6 and Regen on the SM and the 4+ WSv on the BSB. I run them down with the SM and BSB and stay out of the trolls way. My maneater takes 2 wounds to the trolls and holds. good boy.
Bottom 4
He turns his boyz on the right around realizing that the big fight is still not decided. I kill off one unit of black orcs to the man and ran the other one down with the SL, which also plowed headlong into the trolls. the gnoblars also gave chase as well as my general and the 2 ogre bull horde remnant. The trolls killed my maneater but was now in CC with a nasty scraplauncher.
top 5....great game ehh? i hope you get the gist of it.
My SM, BSB, and 2 leadbelchers are now too far into his deployment zone to do much else or get in spellcasting range
to support the larger combat, so i send them off to finish off the goblin doomdiver and the unit of archers that had finally rallied from fleeing on turn 2. I think Team USA also lost the soccer game at this point. Between impact hits and some nasty attacks, the SL killed off the trolls and reformed to hopefully get off a combo charge along with my tyrant next turn on his generals unit.
bottom 5.
at this point here is what is left.
I have a tyrant with 2 bulls, a scraplauncher, and my unit of gnobs in the middle of the table. I also have 2 LBs, my SM, my BSB, and a gorger whose work is pretty well finished.
He has 2 big units of orc boyz, one of which is pretty close to me and contains a general and the level 4 shammy. The other one is still pretty far to my right but is getting close to charge range. He also has a savage orc shaman on his lonesome near the right unit of boyz.
In his magic phase he generates a whole bunch more PD and casts IF loss of control whatever with the WAAAAGH spell again! This time he rolls a 7 and takes wounds to everyone in base-to-base with the caster which was noone.
He starts to charge both units of orc boyz into my general but then i realize HE IS CLOSER TO THE GNOBS!!!! HIP HIP HOORAY for the maligned mostly ignored gnoblars. they get squished mercilessly.
top 6
The leadbelchers on my right catch up to that nasty savage shaman and blast him to smitherines with 18 shots. I charge my tyrant and SL into his generals unit. He challenges and I accept. Turn 6. General vs. General. He only gets one hit with his 100pt auto wound sword and I get him down to one wound. the combat comes out a draw.
bottom 6
he charges in with his other unit of orc boyz and finish off my horde. We were striking in Initiative order so all attacks were happening simultaneously. First my SL kills off his shaman, who also kills off the SL. Next, his general kills my general by landing all 4 attacks with the auto-wound sword, and I only get one hit on him. need 4 to wound....got it. So in the final combat in the bottom of the last turn everyone dies in true ogre/orc fashion.
Take-aways:
I really really had fun in this game. We both made a ton of mistakes, but I think they made the game great. We both loved the new 8th edition changes that we knew enough of to play with, especially the magic phase. I realized turn 6 that I had forgotten my new stomp attacks for the entire game, but I dont really think they would have changed very many outcomes.
I obviously made some alterations to my list and think I will be better next game. I think that 1 SM is definitely sufficient and efficient in the magic phase. His main limitation is that He can only cast each spell once per phase and we generally will be casting 4 spells. There were many many times when I would have liked to have casted trollguts or toothcracker or bullgorger more than once per phase. He let braingobbler go thru a couple of times in fear of those spells. I cant imagine how much better it would be having the threat of 2 trollguts on the way. The horde I feel was viable but my real MVP was the scraplauncher. I dont stand a chance of turning this game around without that thing. It is so versatile. It
s a monster in the shooting phase and a huge threat in close combat.
Thanks for reading all the way to the end!!!
