Taking on the heavies?

original thread ↗

Hey guys,
I have to say this site and forum are amazing. The lay out and design, the information and the gallery I don't think there are a lot of warhammer related websites that can compete with the Ogre stronghold. So ever since I've joined I've been going over the site, trying to get ideas and info about Ogre Kingdoms. I've been reading the tactical articles, about gnoblars, hunters, maneaters, bulls slavegiants and leadbelchers. But I'm getting the impression that they're all more suited to tackle the flankers, light cavalry and such.
What I'd like to know is how do you deal with heavy cavalry, elite infantry and the big monsters in this game?Especially if the opposing army has multiple of those.

If there are already articles available that deal with this topic, please feel free to point me in that direction. :D

Thanks

Hello and welcome to the Stronghold!

Sadly we don't have a ton of ways to deal with heavy cav/elite infantry/monsters etc. The main tactic we rely on as OK generals is bait and flee - running a unit of Ogres (usually Bulls or Leadies) up into someones face and positioning them in such a way that when they are charged and flee it leaves the enemy unit in a bad position for a counter charge. Then we hit em with our own "hard" units like Ironguts or Maneaters and a few characters and hope for the best!

There really is just one answer to the above stated of heavy cavalry, elite infantry and monsters.

And that answer is:
IRONGUTS!!!!! And lots of them  :P

On the other hand... my answer to most things in life is ironguts, but they have almost never let me down  :D
There is only news.  There is no good or bad.
I actually had my Tyrant charge a steam tank once.. a few bangs with his stick (i.e. Siegebreaker) and that technological wonder was reduced to a steaming pile.. (pun intended)

Leadies tend to tenderise fast cavalry pretty much, and trappers can harass your opponents units and other thingses like an ex-wife..

Meh, probably go for a Slavegiant and a unit of Maneaters.. a solid flanking unit combo..
A Gnoblar a day keeps that pesky hunger at bay.. for a moment..

I consistently fight a steamtank...i've never been able to kill one---untill i played ogres

Now it always goes poof in one round (thanks to some suggestions from here) i just send my butcher with the siegebreaker at it and it is mincemeat, tho tyrants do an equally nice job.

if you can get the charge maneaters with greatweapons (s7!) do the job

Thanks for the answers guys.

Do you tend to run them MSU style (3) or do you go for beefier units with all the bells and whistles?

Most people run MSU. Others run what I like to call, "Mini-Deathstar".

MSU has a lot of advantages for taking out the "Heavies".

With the numerous units we have ones we can use to bait in the heavies and flee away or so that we are charging from multiple directions on the heavy. If we have to sacrifice a unit to draw the Heavy into a location where we can deal with it better we can do so because we have redundant units and are loosing a small portion of our force.

The Mini-Deathstar has a different strength for it. Usually the Mini-Deathstar consists of our own heavies such as Bull Rhinox-Riders or a Tyrant-MEs-BSB Bruiser unit. The advantages this unit has is that it often won't vanish under a charge from a "Heavy" and might actually win the combat. In the case of Rhinox Riders they have To5 and 5 wounds each and if you can avoid a flank charge then you likely have a bunch of attacks going back at the heavies that charged you. The Tyrant-MEs-BSB can be stubborn if they don't kill off the ME's and won't budge, if they kill off the ME's they are looking at some pretty substantial attacks coming back from the Tyrant/Bruiser.

Don't get me wrong, the Mini-Deathstar still tends to be MSU but it has less "Multiple" than the other and MSU tends to end up with the Tyrant somewhere in it turning his unit into something dangerous.

In a 2000pts game I try to run 2 units of 3 Ironguts as well as 2 units of 4 Ironguts.

Then I usually put a bruiser or tyrant in each of the units with only 3 Ironguts.
I  almost never put more than 1 character in a unit, if you have 1 here and 1 there it gives you a few "mini-deathstars" for your opponent to worry about and not just one big deathstar for him to avoid.

(you can't avoid 4 units of IG where 2 or 3 of them each have a somewhat beefed out character)
