Leadbelchers

original thread ↗

I just started dabbling with Ogres. Used a unit of 2-4 Leadbelchers as dogs of war for my gobbos in 5 games at the weekend. And I have to say they made quite an impression, carving a path of destruction through Skaven in 4 battles. Most memorably blasting a 40 strong unit of Stormvermin packed with characters and fancy magic items off the field 2 games in a row

There psychological impact on your opponent is great as well, they can end up destroying there own battle plan just to kill them.

I liked using the leadys so much I just ordered an entire ogre army to go with them.
I love Leadbelchers! Aside from the Slavegiant, they give me quite a good laughs in my games.. And I have found that by marching two units of two Leadbelchers straight to the nearest cover in turn one, then threaten to shoot/charge anything in turn two/three, shoot/charge in turn three/four gives me a reasonable great "I play with your mind, what to do, what to do?" advantage towards my opponent..

Leadbelchers.. Ogres that smoke like real men. err.. Ogres..  :?
A Gnoblar a day keeps that pesky hunger at bay.. for a moment..
Reading this post I really wonder if people use their Belchers the right way.

Imho they can do potentially two things in the game if they are lucky.

1) Bait and flee, which they can always do. But so can 3 bulls for the same point cost as 2 belchers.
2) Maybe if they get lucky they can do some damage to a small unit of fast cav or a lonely flier lige an Eagle.

The fact that they have to roll to hit is what breaks the poor belchers. On average you will roll a 5 with the artillery dice. At BEST you hit on 4's this is 2.5 hits per belcher thus 5 s4 hits. On an eagle that's 2.5 wounds which is not enough to kill. On rank and file and most fast cav its 3.3 wounds. So against heavy stuff they do next to nothing, plus the potential for alot of damage is about the same as the potential for wipingthemselves out.

I would LOVE for the belchers to be nice, the concept is fantastic. But these days i find it way more effective to bait with bulls, because 3 bulls may actually make an impact on a charge. 2 belchers bounce on almost anything, and as such are not as good baiters as people make them imho.

[/sad rant]
I guess you can guess whose belchers did absolutely nothing last game :P

And again I'll point out the numerous comments about how people remember what LBs have the POTENTIAL of doing and them being a better threat than weapon. They make great bait. I recently wiped out a unit of heavy cav to the man because both 2xLB units got range to them and fired. My opponent will remember that and next game I will be able to "threaten" such a thing again. The chances of it happening again are small, but the threat will make my opponent treat them with caution, shoot them from afar as a priority  or try to tie them up to keep them from shooting. This means my Tyrant's unit becomes a lesser priority.

You must roll better than me   ;) I continue to take my belchers to the field (often 2x2) simply because they are awesome. They have however never killed anything worthwhile. My opponents know about their potential, they just know thats all it is and usually risk it, concentrating on the threats that are certain and not a potential. I still love them, but from a game mechanic perspective they are crappy considering their costs not as good as their points indicate  :P And I was just wondering wether people used them correctly according to the rules, since i aw a lot of chatter about what people kill with them .

ps. is the replybox really sccrewy in IE8 for you as well? the text jumps up and down like craszy here at work.
My very first pet gnoblar isn't he cute?

Yes it is.
People use Internet Explorer? Really?

I don't roll better. Notice I said that after my last game I have done less than 5 more wounds to enemies than I have to my LBs since I started tracking that about 3 months ago. I don't track how many I have done total but just the difference between the 2 values. I like that I'm finally in a positive number instead of negative(negative being more wounds to my LBs).

Since I started taking a champion in my Leadies I have yet to blown them off the table. Randomizing those incoming misfire hits is really nice.

Compared to our other units, that champion is a steal.
This is Wiki, the pet gnoblar. Say hello, Wiki.
I've always toyed with the idea of dropping a 5-wide unit of leadbelchers dead-center on the first round of deployment. I imagine with glee my opponent soiling himself in doubt and fear. No one is crazy enough to blow all those points on a unit almost guaranteed to blow itself up in the first round of shooting. Crazy... but still somehow a very ogre thing to do. Maybe, he'll think, there IS something to fear. The doubt and influence it has on the game may be worth the point cost...

Then I come to my senses. I am trying to win the game, after all.
Maybe not one unit... but what about 4 units of 5!!?

1100+ pts of leadbelcher? Now THAT's thinking with your gut!
Heh, my last tourney I had 1 unit of 2 lead belchers. I don't think they score enough kills form shooting across all three games to justify their points in just one game. They did manage to kill a Vargulf, in melee. And they only misfired 3 times. Ofcourse, the last time the misfired it was bottom of turn six, both shooters missfired and they took 10 shots at themselves. Killing one belcher out right and the other panic with no chance at rallying.

And the worst part was, I missed getting a massacre that game by 60 points. If I hadn't taken the shot at all, I would have had the points for it.
