DIY Movement Trays

Found this in another forum, hope it's OK.  Something to do with those old sprues and great for us since finding some store bought ones are a little tough for Ogres and the way we rank up:

that's a awesome tutorial... i just thought about how much easier it would be to create the skirmisher movement trays for the trappers.

I just tried these like 2 days ago and after all the work and measuring for some reason the ogres did not fit so I'm leaning boarderless as well after all I use the NFbDeDB or whatever magnets on all my models including gnoblars so they should be able to hold fine.  May even glue a piece of felt to the bottom, to prevent scratching and the top since the magents will work through the cloth no problem.  The only issue I am having is how sharp the steel is along the edges.

Heh, neat. But I need to watch money right now and im living in Shanghai with limited Mandarin so finding plasticard might be a pain, google wont work.

I'm about to construct something similar from the sprues and the cardboard from the unit purchases. Free.

What I can't figure out if how to make it like lego so I can easily reform LB Rangers from 10x3 to 6x5 etc...

Eureka! I got the answer to the sharp edges.  Tape like masking or electrical around the whole tray.  BTW not sure how much plasticard goes for but I bought enough metal sheets, both galvenized and tin, at home depot for easily a 3k pt army for 3-4 dollars.  Metal shears/cutters are an issue I picked some up in the ACE Hardware bargain bin for $6 (they also usually have a great 10 set file kit in the bargain bin as well for $5), felt sheets to put on the bottom so you don't scratch your gameboard will run you under a buck at Walmart.

A jigsaw?

instead of using a base, you could put a neodinium magnet on each of the edges of each model, and effectively make them stick together like a net. I'm not sure how strong you would have to go (I would think 1/3 lbs would be fine for 20mm plastics). You'd probably want to make a jig of some kind to make sure you could cut the edges out exactly the same on each base, and make sure that you glue the magnets in place with the correct polarity for all of the models.

Neodymium? Never heard (or remembered) that word before. Had to google it.

For magnets I have ordered from http://www.powermagnetstore.com/ which worked just fine. Looking at that website. I'm guessing any magnet will do. The website mentions Neodymium so i'll just assume a magnet is a magnet. If you can see the type of magnet that you would recommend on the website that would be useful.

In Shanghai there is a local place that sells cheap magnets (can you "fake" magnets?).

I was thinking of magnetising the corner and side models and if my other measurements are correct the other models will just slot in.

Have you got some picks of this done? How does it effect the aesthetic look of the unit. I am a bit worried that if I didn't align it correctly the unit might "buckle?"

Neodymium Iron-Boron (NIB) magnets are the small little shiny plated really-strong ones you guys are talking about.

"Normal" magnets are ferrite, to use the technical parlance.

Now I can use my pile of empty sprues for something usefull! Great find, since GW's movement trays are a bit on the thight side for big blocks of Ogres..
