Maverickkmans Motivational Ogre Gnoblog

original thread ↗

I decided to repost this as Gnoblog and to continue to post my other Ogres as well.  Hopefully this will keep me motivated to keep on painting/modding my Ogres...

So I started WFB for the first time about 8 monthes ago when my local game cluub started a campaign.  I chose the Ogres for two reasons: 1. Low model count- I hate painting Rank-and-file minis, but love painting characters/special things and 2. i was told the Ogres ride big bad ass cavalry that no one else can compare too.

So i went to ebay, bought a bunch of ogres, proxied a bunch more and started playing.  We played 2 games a month at the club meetings, so it took me most of the campaign to figure out a good list that fit my style and the Ogre method, about half way throught the campaign I decided to look into the Rhinox Riders a little farther to help this progression.

I liked what I saw EXCEPT the price that went with using the FW or Using th GW Rhinox.  Ghark looked cool on paper and I needed him to lead my army.

What to do? What to do?

Well, being the cheap SOB that I am, I decided to make my own .  I wanted to make two units, and wanted to see how cheap I could do it.

The first challenge was to find my Rhinox.  I checked out my old Mageknight figs since I used some of those for the Scraplaunchers, but they were just too small for the vision in my mind.  Next, I went to the D&D bins and found a few that could work, but alas I didnt have three of the same miniatures.  Dammit.  So, while I was contemplating(i.e. stalling for a few monthes) and deciding how to progress, a friends son got into SW minis, so while digging throught the tubs of SW Minis, I came across the Reek.

EUREKA! I had found my Rhinoxen! I then started the search to see how many I had.  Dammit again, I only had 2, so checked with the local former SW player base to see if anyone had extras.

None did.  Dammit.

So I went where all desperate gamers go, I went to Ebay.  I found a seller that wanted $5 each, but had the four i needed.  I offered $1 each and after a few messages back and forth we met near the middle at $2.75 each.  VICTORY!!!

I now had the six Rhinox needed for my units, but they weren't the fuzzy beasts yet, they were still scaley.  With my trusty dremmel i moved some of the legs using greenstuff, and started disassemling/delegging the future riders.  I  saw someone else's post about using static grass to create fur, so each rhinox was given three coats of craft glue and static grass and then primed.

I created saddles out of greenstuff, and then mounted the ogre torsos on top of them, and greenstuffed the legs on, attached arms/weapons and heads and voila: Rhinox Riders!

They looked a bit bare though so I went into the bits bag and stared attaching bits pieces, I got an extra Orc drum since I only had one from a buddy.  I magnetized the banners to be removable and hid the magnet in a barrel behind the rider, although next time i would sink the opposite magnet into the greenstuff, rather than glueing them on and trying to hide them later.

The models were each mounted on a magnetic 50mm base, so that they would attach to chariot bases that I had added sheet metal to, therby allowing the models to either be on regular or Bull Rhinox.  I textured both bases and primed everything, I will finish basing the models after I paint them.

Wow my photo taking skills need some love......

Ghark.

His fluff really inspired me to get this guy going, I started building him at the same time as the Rhinox Riders but, hit a few derailments some that turned out quite well though.

I liked the picture from the White Dwarf and started out attempting to replicate it in a similar fashion.  i bought the Khorne box as the base and started filing and working on creating a similar Steam Rhinox for about two weeks, while I was doing so, it just didn't seem right.

He just wouldn't be BIG enough, as his troops would tower over him, and since the RR were totally customized, using stock GW just didn't visually work either.

So once again: What to do? What to do?

My daughter had given me a Burger King wind-up bobble head that has a storm trooper riding an AT-AT, and it was sitting on my painting desk staring at me....just staring at me....calling me...tempting me...

And so it was so.  The steam rhinox would be an AT-AT.  Why the hell not? It might work...maybe.

I disassembled the piece removing the bobble head and the walking mechanism(I was tempted to leave it so Ghark could walk on his own though), cut down the center of it so a model could fit into the AT-AT.  I saw it more as a rider would sit in the mount rather than sit on it.  I hunted down bits and other pieces that might work but, didnt attach anything yet.

Now, what to use for Ghark? Again, I went to the Mage Knight and D&D bins to search.  I wasn't overly excited about any of the ogre or similar modelsbecause they were either too small or just didn't too freaking ugly( sculpt wise).  One of my favorite pieces to use from D&D was the Iron Golem, as I looked at this piece I decided what the heck why not?

I first removed the right arm to reposition it and removed the weapon as well. The head was decapitated and replaced with another and a Helmet left over from som e Gundam models from when I was younger.   Next i had the idea of removing the legs, so Ghark could ride in the mount easier, the legs were removed and shortened at the knee.  The boots would be place onto a seperate base, in case the mount gets destroyed in combat.  The legs and boots were magnatized, and some steel sheeting inserted into the rhinox so Ghark would attach to that as well.  The arm was then reattached and greenstuffed into a more natural pose, with a improved upon weapon(I'm  not satisfied with the result and it may be changed later.)

Bit and pieces were then added to both models and the boots attached to bases that I had made, while other parts were drying etc...

The mount was then attached to the base using JB Weld , to ensure that the model NEVER came off.

Some primer and paint and then it was done... see for yourself.

My photo skills still need work...

I'm really liking that AT-AT :)  I'd love to see some bigger/clearer pics when your photo skills get their brush and pplish though ;)

I was born and bred in a briar patch!
I smiled when I thought about the rebel's base on Hoth being attacked by an AT-AT with an ogre the size of a mountain on his back.

This guy would really be the Mountain that Rides, like Ser Gregor Clegane in A Song of Ice and Fire.  :D

Great looking guys, but haha like the past two I also found ghark and his rhinox very AT-AT looking.
Proud owner of 2250 ogres, 2000 dwarfs, and 1500 empire, as well as 750 romans (different game)

personally - Ghark doesn't do it for me here. he's meant to be the most imposing of all the rhinox riders with a daemon-engine mount...here he looks almost comically small riding an AT-AT! :)

no offense meant at all, it's a nice model and well executed, just not as ghark in my opinion.

I love the other rhinox you've made, and like the use of static grass as fur saving you quite a bit of cash! Good initiative!
