Return of the Stone Maws

original thread ↗

Right, well now i've just about finished unpacking stuff and i've had a few more trades come through I've decided to slowly get the Stone Maw tribe back up & running... and boy have they grown, I almost can't help but think that i have too many ogres

So, even though character conversions and maneater conversions are still to come this is what there is so far:

Tyrant (paymaster conversion in progress)
2 Bruisers (Cathayan & Empire Maneaters)
18 Iron guts
19 Bulls (inc 3 Bellowers)
8 Standard Bearers
3 Yetis
6 Leadbelchers
2 Maneaters (chaos conversions)
And close on another dozen bulls unassembled to work on and a whole bunch of Gnoblars

The one thing i'm really undecided on currently is skin tone, likely to go for a normal flesh tone, tattoos/warpaint will be in dark grey, metals likely to be rusted

Not sure how often this blog will be updated but i thought as i'm going to be starting the reconstruction work this weekend that i'd get it up for much needed encouragement

great to see you back in action with the ogres SD :)  That certainly looks like a lot of ogres.  I'd start thinking about the basing colour of the army at this stage and go for a contrasting colour for the skintone - this'll really bring things together for your force.

good luck!

That is a lot of Ogres! are you seriously gonna make and paint them all?

The colour scheme sounds good, I want pics!

Other than the Grey tat/warpaint work and bronze/rusted weapons i'm reckoning green as the prevelant cloth colour (don't work with green, but got salamanders to paint now), other option is to go nuts with the clothing and have every unit in different colours and just keep them bright

 cheers FF
Make, well most are already assembled, just character conversions to work on and repairs... painting, in between working on the Cryx, Marines and anything else, but i'd like a 1k force painted by about June (and that'll include 20 gnoblars and 8-9 trappers)
Pics will have to wait a little while yet

With all the other stuff on the go, June is ambitious, but I reckon you can do it.
Good luck!

Well, not much of an update but the test model is underway with the metals complete and the skin basecoated, not 100% sure about the rust effect i've got but i'll see how it looks when the model's complete

Very basic as i'm trying to speed paint them... Tin bitz basecoat, stippled Macharius Orange, light drybrush Boltgun metal... and now i've looked at it in the light of day i'm quite happy, might have to tone down the amount of silver next time but still happy with it
Skin half complete, leather & cloth basecoated... might have the test complete by the end of the week

These guys? Back? Again?  Well, I am very excited to see this army take shape. I think I have seen pretty much every carnation of this force, and I think that this will be the best so far :)

Try and keep these guys going this time, no matter how slow the resultant updates are :)

After all, painting 100 night goblins is something you do in the morning just before you are off to work.

And I think you missed a 0 when you wrote 11 armies. The correct nr should be 110 armies I would think, based on your painting speed.
Will do JJ, i've got em all out on a shelf now rather than tucked away, kind of hard to ignore them staring at me while i'm on the PC... however only real painting time i'm grabbing is lunch breaks at work, about half way through the skin highlights on the test mini now though

edit: and yeah, this would be the 3rd incarnation... technically only re-animating the second incarnation, but lets face it, it's beyond that really so 3rd

Right, time for a mini update... the almost finished test model, complete with warpaint:

And yes, i've spotted a few more mouldlines i should have spent more time shifting but with already assembled minis it can be such a paint getting rid of some without causing damage... as i said, he's almost finished, still got hair, trousers and base to work on but he gives a good idea of what i'm going for

And the next 2 on the painting slab, just WiP's

And finally something else Ogre related that i will be working on just because i like the minis:

Looking good! I like the metal quite a lot. Not sure how I feel about the green pants in combo with the metal. Perhaps they could do with a bit of detail as well?

Looks a bit dull, perhaps turn the pant into a tartan pattern.

Well, i was just going to bring the trousers up to Snot Green and leave it at that... but now you guys have got me thinking of putting a pattern there instead to mix things up even more

So after idly thinking about the above at work i've pretty much boiled it down to a couple of options with the trousers:
1) Stick to the original plan, bring them up to snot green and leave it at that
2) Paint a pattern on to the material (floral/tartan/whatever)
3) Daub symbols onto it in the same grey as the warpaint to show the ogres/gnoblars "customizing" it
4) Paint it patchwork, stiches and all
5) Bring it up to not just snot green but scorpion for some seriously bright gear
Keep in mind i'm not going to be keeping much of the cloth in the army the same colour, i see Ogres more as scavenging whatever materials they can for clothing in whatever amounts they need... so this one might have green trousers, but the next will probably start working through all sorts of colours anyway :D just to keep the army bright :P

And figured i'd get a couple more WiP bits up

Trappers - nothing particularly special so far, going to be adding more wacky conversions as i come p with them and relegate the other more normal ones to the ranks of the fighters if i end up with too many:

And my Slave Giant... i know, a club not a chain weapon but i just prefer the look... nothing special with the bulk of the model yet so no shot of that, but expect to see more chains and more gnoblar handlers before i'm done :)

Back Chains:

great to see you back on the ogres!

Test model looks great and nice to see some warpaint appearing. i think try out the lighter green pants before going all out for the patterned effect because that can detract from the rest of the lovely work you've put in :)
