2500 pts Tourny list - I'm stuck!

original thread ↗

Hello Ogre Stronghold!

I joined as a member just before xmas but my warhammer paths took me down an all-goblin army route. Well its time to put that to an end - theres a North American tourny coming up beiing held at every GW store - you play 1 game a month for the next 3 months, winners are announced at some later date. 2500pts army lists, only 1 dispell scroll per list, minimum of 4 core units per list.

So I really, really, REALLY want to use Ogres! I have read about them, dreamed of ways to use them, but haven't actually played a full army - but have taken them as dogs of war for my empire and the orcs.

Heres what I thought I could use - but I'd really appreciate some feedback!

The Hungry Hordes of Mount Thug

Ogre Tyrant - heavy armour, 2 sword gnoblars, luck gnoblar, wyrdstone necklace, deamon killer scars, wall crusher, seige breaker

Brusier BSB, heavy armour, look-out gnoblar, tenderizor

Butcher, bangstick, dispell scroll

Hunter, mastadon armour, 2 sabre tusks

3 Ogre Bulls, additional h/w, bellower
3 Ogre Bulls, additional h/w, bellower
3 Ironguts, bellower
3 Ironguts, bellower
20 Gnoblar Fighters
20 Gnoblar Fighters
8 Trappers
8 Trappers

3 Yhettes
3 Yhettes

4 Maneaters, heavy armour, brace of handguns
Gorgor

"Dinner time"

Plan is simple - tyrant and BSB join maneaters, they will shoot at things, and then charge into combat!
The rest of the army is there to ensure the deathstar stays alive and makes it to combat! IF the rest of the army even causes damage then so much the better!

hunter is wicked - used him as an ally for my empire and he was plain solid - and i love the model
butcher - well why not? he's spamming 3 spells a turn on a 3+ - something is bound to work sooner or later with him
crappy stuff is there to grab table quarters

Let me know what you think about the list! many thanks
some words of reasonings

Hunter - love the model, love what his fluff says about him, and I really want a list that includes him - is he the best value for his points? Maybe not, but he's just to great to NOT be part of my campaign!

Tryant and BSB - So I want to try out this death star that I read about on the Ogre Stronghold - Im very open to how they could be tooled up. I went with what I did as I reasoned that both have good magic weapons, the tyrant is a terror causer - which is always nice, and he has another impact hit - which cant be bad, and the ward save is always a useful thing to have in battle - especially as he gets to re-roll his ward save once per game (ie when he's hit by a cannon!).

Butcher - well I know that you either take 3 of them or none, but I really need a bsb, i have to take a tyrant, the hunter is one of those models that made me start this army in the 1st place, so i figure what the hell, single butcher it is. i did try to make him somewhat effective with his bang stick - he'll pump out 3 spells a turn (inc bound spell) and who knows - he might even pull some off!
I'll see your words of reasoning with a few of my own!  ;)

- Both Daemon-Killer Scars and Wall Crusher are too situational and expensive for an allcomers tournament build. At least two popular armies will completely ignore the Terror, and many armies have ItP, Unbreakable, Frenzy, MoS, cold-blooded, etc ... not worth it. I find that the CLS or even a GW with Beastkiller is a great thing to have on a Tyrant and frees up points for other useful items. Wallcrusher is awful and you should never count on getting the Bull Charge - most good players won't let you.

- If you must take a Hunter I would suggest giving him something that is good for CC. Hunters just aren't that good at shooting. Worse yet, you'll be spending 200 or more points on a crappy bolt thrower. I'd give this guy Beastkiller or maybe the Siegebreaker and a gutplate and send him at the flanks.

- Why 4 Maneaters? That is a lot if you expect Tyrant and the BSB to join  the unit and still shoot at things. I would drop it down to 3 and use those extra points elsewhere, perhaps adding champs on the Ironguts and 9th Trapers.

- Standing around and shooting with a unit of ME and your Tyrant is generally a waste of points in my book. Think about how much you are spending per shot, at a mediocre BS. I would much rather have a CLS on the ME so they can take on the elite troops in the game and survive.

- Sure you might cast a couple spells with your Butcher but that doesn't mean they will go off. Too much magic defense and offense out there. With one Butcher at this point level I would consider going with two scrolls instead of the Bangstick. Ideally I would drop the Hunter and take a second Butcher with 2 scrolls.

- Adding Champs to those already really expensive Yhetees can help them stay on the board longer with randomization. Might want to give it a go.

Just my thoughts.

Sadly just one dispell scroll per army - so no scroll caddies for this Tyrant!

I agree with your views on Deamon Killer Scars - as cool as terror is maybe it wont be the best investment of points.

Hunter - like I've mentioned he's too cool for cats! He's in no matter what, it's just a given for my army. If I had the points you'd have seen scrap launchers in there to - I have 2 of them and love them to bits!

Maneaters - Reason I took 4 was to give the Tyrant and Brusier some cover! Their pistols will only be used if I have a really tempting target (i.e. a large target) otherwise their pistols are more there to server as additional handweapons in combat - but I do like the thought of firing them in turn 1 as they have a minimum 25" range! Not bad!

I will look at reducing the number down - originally I had 2 units of 3 in my list

RULES QUESTION

On Army Builder it won't let me equip my Brusier BSB with the magic great weapon - am I wrong in thinking I was free to choose any magic items what so ever for the BSB so long as I don't take a magic bannor? I was tempted to give him siege breaker, and the tenderizer back to my Tyrant
Shooting 25" is nice and all but it means you are moving at max 6" with a unit that needs to be in CC to really do anything worthwhile.

If you are taking the Hunter give him something that will help in CC, the Mastadon armor isn't that.

For the BSB question:

classic! BSB with great magic weapon it is then!

OK - for the list itself - i went with brace of handguns as the shooting is a secondary feature - the fact that they act as additional handweapons was the selling point - AND they can also shoot if they want to

Im thinking of

1) Dropping both gnoblars
2) dropping 1 unit yhetees
3) dropping butcher
4) Dropping gorger

and having total of FOUR units of 3 ironguts, maybe 2 units of 3 maneaters

oh - and 2 units of NINE trappers instead of 1 unit of 8 - would that be better?
