best all comer tyrant build

original thread ↗

just curious what you guys would give your tyrant not knowing what you will be going against.

Ibuild 1-  was leaning torward, sword of might, giantbreaker, brace of handguns, wyrdstone neck, hva, greedyfist and luck gnoblar.

build 2- thundermace, wyrdstone, longstrider, hva, boh, and luck gnob.

He will be in a unit of maneaters, and tenderizer is out of the question as i am using it on my bsb.

which build do you guys like better? or what would your build look like?

This is a build taken directly from Wildcard.

Tyrant
with heavy armour, 2 sword gnoblars, 1 luck gnoblar, brace of handguns, cathayan longsword with wyrdstone necklace, greedy fist, greyback pelt, beastkiller

This guy has a 4+ armour save and a 5+ ward - either of which is re-rollable once/game.  On a successful save he eats the magical properties of a weapon used against him.  If he hits a wizard (not wounds, just hits) he drains a magic level from them - very funny against greater daemons!).  He's immune to psychology and has jumped up to weapon skill 7.  At the same time all opponents are -1 to hit him (so WS3 troops only hit him on a 6 and even WS7 only hits him on a 5+) and, against large targets, any wound he inflicts counts as 2 wounds instead.  He can also move through terrain without penalty - and has a ranged attack and the ability to always stand and shoot.
I don't suffer from mental instability. In fact, I enjoy it immensely.

Gutlord Inquisitor: FORUM FIGHT! Me, I'm betting on the stronghold. Sure, they're outnumbered with thick skulls, stubborn bull-headedness and an inflated sense of self-worth, but hey, they're Ogres.
ahh the classic "swiss army" build.  I do like it.
It's really a great build when you have a Bruiser packing the Tenderizer to back the army up a bit.  No one expects that kind of build on a Tyrant and then BAM they get smacked in the face and tenderized!

My personal build is:
Thundermace
Wyrdstone
Mawseeker
Luck Gnob
BoC
Heavy Armor

Toughness 6 usually makes up for one less armor save, the Thundermace gives him S7 and the ability to generate massive combat rez against 20mm models.
It is sad to me that a family can be ripped apart by something as simple as wild Saber Tusks.
I run

2 ME, BoH HvA
Bruiser (BSB)HvA, LuckGn, Tenderiser
Tyrant (Gen)HvA, BoH, LuckGn, Thundermace, Wyrdstone Necklace, Longstrider BN

Bruiser keeps my Tyrant from getting challenged and possibly builds up CR from Overkill.
Tyrant uses the template on units with smaller bases where he can build up massive CR. Then again against 3 40x40 with Multiwounds it might not hurt to template them as well depending on Toughness.
MEs act as the glue that keeps them in combat in case of a miss. Stubborn Ld8 helps as does the BSB reroll. If he kills off the ME to get rid of Stubborn then my Tyrant runs away with 3d6 instead of 2d6, hopefully outrunning their unit for a second chance at killing them.

My mostly used build is this

Tyrant
   Mawseeker
Deathcheater                  Ilove the Mawseeker and death cheater combo because he is T6, and if
Tenderiser                       you manage to wound him you have to reroll it plus 5+ Ward
   Wyrdstone necklace
   Heavy armor

My recently made allcomers is this

Tyrant
    Mawseeker
Deathcheater                 I love this guy because not only does he get the M\DC combo, he gets
Greedy fist                     the awsome spangleshard save and eats peoples magic weapons, cause
sword of might               whatever Lord or hero tries to take him down is obviously going to have
    spangleshard                 a magic weapon.
    cathayan longsword
    heavy armor
My tyrant vs. your 50 man horde? Hahaha! Lets do this........
dont really wanna risk a failed stupidity test though.  and no room for a jadelion in the deathstar
true, i do give my bruiser Jade lion, and my tyrant i gave other things because i try to rely on his Ld9

I would love to be able to combine big names, but alas, it's not allowed as far as I know. Also, you can't use the Cathayan longsword while you also posses a magic weapon. Other than that I can see why you would take these builds. They are really resilient and pack a good punch.

To be honest I can't think of a better all commersbuild than the one quoted by Eg Giant-tripper, although I would most probably swap the greedyfist for the bullgut. Than again, a build involving one of the magic greathammers is never wrong :)

I think that best way to use Mawseeker is that Tyrant and Bruiser both have Mawseeker and Bruiser have also Jade Lion. Then put them into unit of Ironguts. Now your unit can re-roll all tests.

If they are in Maneaters then Jade Lion is waisted 'cause they are already ItP. You gonna re-roll only your failed Stupidity test.

My first pet Gnoblar. Let it's name to be The Thinny One
2 mawseekers double the amount of checks you need to make, making chances to fumble (at the wrong moment) substantial (28%).

I was wondering, why does the jade lion allow you to reroll the stupidity test, while the maneaters immunity to psychology does not allow you to ignore the roll alltogether?

Because it says so in the main rulebook. I know it seems a bit silly that ItP only makes you immune to about half the psychology rules, but even the bravest warrior can suffer from things like stupidity. In fact, courage and stupidity can share similar traits....

Thanks for elaborating. I see now that I only checked the character section. Immunity to psychology is not really explained there (which makes sense since it is allready explained in the -by me- overlooked psychology section), hence my confusion.

I thought the Cathayan longsword isnt a magic weapon, since it doesnt count towards your limit of Magic items and big names, there fore you could also take a sword of might

I try to keep him as cheap as possible, but still be great.

Tenderizer, Wyrdstone charm, heavy armor and a luck gnoblar for 281.

In larger games, I'll go with the beastkiller and a great weapon, when I can pass the tenderizer on to a qualified bruiser.

you can certainly buy a cathayan longsword and a sword of might for the same character - HOWEVER, while you hold a magical weapon, that is the only weapon you are allowed to use.  THis means you won't get any benefit from the CLS so its a bit pointless to buy one.

i see.....
My tyrant vs. your 50 man horde? Hahaha! Lets do this........
The build my tyrant usually has is:

Heavy Armor
Sword Gnoblars (2)
Luck Gnoblar
Siegebreaker
Mawseeker
Wyrdstone Necklace
Gut Maw

Allows for decent armor save and ward, T6 and S8 allows him to take on anything and live usually and gut maw is to get the few wounds for the tyrant or just keep characters out of combat as people don't like to fight against T6 tyrant and give him wounds. Also Siegebreaker allows him to usually insta kill warmachines and Steam Tanks.
2 mawseekers double the amount of checks you need to make, making chances to fumble (at the wrong moment) substantial (28%).

Not if they're in the same unit.
I run 2 Mawseekers in the same unit and yes only 1 stupid check.  If you are playing Dark Elves and run a Character riding a cold one in a unit of Cold One Knights how many checks would you make?

Anyhow i run Tyrant with Tenderizer (Too good and scary not to have), Wyrdstone Necklace, Mawseeker & Greedy Fist + Luck Gnoblar.

wrong I'm afraid Minsc - if they are in a unit that is not itself stupid (like cold ones or trolls) then individual characters with stupidity need individual checks and any one failure make the unit move stupidly.

@falconrider:

you'd make one check with the cold ones as the unit itself suffers from stupidity.  Maneaters don't so you need a check for each individual character I'm afraid.

I hate the rule, but its right.

But in the rulebook it sais that every unit with the stupidity rule has to pass one test (p. 52), and the hero or whatever attached to the unit is part of the unit (p. 72).
So I think there has to be just one check. Could you please tell me the page where it sais you have to pass two tests? I can't find anything about that, not even on page 78...?
No offence meant, I am just willing to learn.  :)

Now all we need is the 7th edition rule that said if the models are killed they don't get to fight and we WOULD be a broken army! lol
