3000 points themed, maybe competitive

original thread ↗

So I am building my 'Trophy' army of Ogres.  I bought all the models in my store practically to build my 3000 point list.

I want the list to be somewhat competitive, lots of fun and to look really good.  I fully intend to track the battles of this army and write up story style battle reps for them.

The theme behind the army is an enforcer tribe for Greasus Goldtooth who also hire out as mercenaries when the mood strikes them.  The army is very well equipped and enjoys their high status aomg their kin.

Recently the Tribe has been taken over by a new Tyrant, the old one failing to be quick or ruthless enough to keep his position.  (His head now addorns my Battle Standard.)

Gorger

Looking around I am going to guess this army goes against some of the conventional wisdom of the forums.

I know the Sword Gnoblars are silly and a 'waste' of points but they just felt right for the list.  I also have the feeling that I am going to miss with my big attacks just to finish off the nasty vampire with a S2 attack.  :)
It is sad to me that a family can be ripped apart by something as simple as wild Saber Tusks.
My problem with your list is that you went troop light and character heavy. The amount of troops and overall models could be accomplished in a 2000 or 2250 list. Although you made full use of your higher amount of character slots with a 3k list I think that your army will struggle due to a very small amount of units.

Thanks for the reply Skraggy.  I've definitely considered what you're talking about.

For me it's a character flaw.  I really get into the backround of my characters, it's usually what inspires the army for me.

Doing so, I really hope that I've made the absolute most of the characters I've chosen to load up on.  Siege Breaker won't come up too often but the first time I blast a Plague Furnace off the planet with it, I will be content :)

I can shift a few things around fairly easily and get some points back (I hit exactly 3000 points).

If I do so, what types of units would you recommend adding?  I'm not a fan of Gnoblars for theme reasons.

If you would remove the IF, LA, champions and banners you could maybe include another unit of ironguts, or a second gorger. Only one just don't seem to work.

Ghark

The Gutmass Tribe
Ogre and chaos BB Team
Stripping everything back gives me enough to get another Gorger in there.  I'll see about picking one up today.

If I were you, I'd drop one of the Hero choices and pick up another unit of either Bulls or Ironguts. More ogres on the table helps quite a bit.

Sounds like some solid advice.  After Christmas I'll have a bit more cash to spend and I'll pick up another box of guts.

Which hero to drop though?  I think I'll need all 3 butchers at that point level but losing the Siege Breaker would be a bummer.

I took down a daemon army yesterday with a 2250 version of this list.  Really happy with where it's going.

If you're thinking of dropping a character, I'd drop your BSB.  He's illegal anyway.  He can't carry any magic items of have any big names.

Keep the Siegebreaker for sure! My favorite weapon in the book.

Congrats on your win!  :)

I think the BSB is essential.

I'll start a gnoblog up on these guys pretty soon.  I'll get pictures this weekend and get them posted.

BSB can have items and big names as long as he doesn't have a magic banner.

I think BSBs are important, but I don't know about the build. Are you going to be able to get that many Bull Charges off?

Congrats on the Daemon win. If you're enjoying your list, that's all that matters! :)

!!

Wow! Thanks, guys! Did not realize that.
At the end of the day fun is certainly all that matters.  I've had a great time building and basing them and all three games I've played have been a blast.

I am still struggling to find a build for the BSB that I love.

Can he take Siegebreaker?

Yes.

My personal (current) favorite is Sword of Might and 2x Thiefstones.

It's good to hear a build I had been considering on my own has already been tried, tested, and found to work!

It's nice because it gets your Bruiser to the important S6 where he will be wounding more often on 2's and also adds some MR to whichever unit you deem important enough for your BSB (and usually your Tyrant).

Nice and simple, I like it very much.

I won my third game straight today against a Bretonian army.  Now the caveat to that is that two of my three wins were against very new players, so not much to brag about since they were learning experiences as much as anything else.

I did find that my 4 maneaters, BSB and Tyrant can hold out against a charge from a unit of Grail Knights and a unit of Knights errant.  The maneaters took 7 wounds and the tyrant 2 but we survived and turned the brets into absolute paste the next turn.  :)
