Skraggy's Gnoblog

original thread ↗

hey skraggy. i'm a tomb kings player myself. i havent looked over your list ( i will later and at that time i will offer gaming advice) but i wanted to point something else out.

the differing shield/unit colors make your army seem miss matched. whereas other armies, such as empire and bretonnia, and chaos to a certain extent, can have differing colors to suggest a divided yet unified look to thier army, i know from experience it doesn't work with tomb kings.

for one, tomb kings are proud of themselves, and would not suffer thier troops to fight under colors other than thiers. this does not go well with several different unit colors.

as such, your blue units and red units will not look good together on the battlefied from a practiced eye. i'm not saying they don't look good, the painting a great for a beginner, but the army will not look unified when being used.

for example, my army (that of the palace of corpses) is unified by a consistent white and bronze theme. only specialised fluff units, such as one of my units of tomb guard, or the priesthood, are painted with differing colors (black and bronze) and even then they stand out as elite troops.

hope you don't take my comments too hard, they were not ment to be, just trying to help!

p.s. there are other cities than khemri. it bugs me to see blue tomb kings all the time. no offense, i'm just part of the "no more blue, no more khemri forces" movment.

- shadowburn.
Thanks a lot shadowburn, but my blue and yellow unit no longer exists I primed over it to give my army a red, gold, and grey theme. I would love to hear your input for another city/background fluff for my army.

you primed over it? did you strip them first?

also, couple more hobby related questions to work on before i get into tactics:

what kind of primer do you use?

do you varnish?
Actually I didn't strip which I am sure is terrible for the detail (too late unfortunately) I prime with a white primer and no I don't varnish although I have some GW 'ardcoat and would love it if you told me what the hell to do with it.  :)

i'd sell it or chuck it and grab some krylon flat clear spray from wall mart (3 bucks a spray-can)

while your out on the town, go to home depot (or equivalent hardware/home improvment store) and pick up some simple green (price varies on size of container the gallon is ten bucks)

another good thing to get is a nail sorting box. i'll take a picture of mine later but its basically a box shaped receptacle for rectangular plastic containers (which come with it, but i digress) the thing works great as a bitz box.

the flat clear spray works as varnish (all my mini's except some really old ones at the bottom of my bits box are varnished with it.)

the simple green, when put into, say, a dollar store tupperware container is great to soak painted mini's in to strip them. it is completly non-toxic and bio-degradable cleaner, so you can chuck it down the sink when your done.

i reccomend letting your mini's soak in it for at least a day, if not two, before pulling them out and scrubbing them under warm water with an old/cheaply gotten tooth brush to remove any paint that was softened by the simple green but not removed.

hope this helps. unless you have any other modeling questions i will prepare a WoTT (wall of tactic text) for your viewing pleasure, as well as any other aspiring tomb king general.

i will also probably be starting a tomb king log soon.
I wouldn't sell &/or chuck Your 'Ard Coat Its Very useful When your looking for a Wet glossy Look. I use It Over Water, Blood splatter, puss, drool.. Etc..

You're all just Food..
My Blog
Thanks shadowburn for the tips, would love to see some tactics and one last thing try not to upstage my gnoblog too much when you start yours :). Not sure if by next update I will have the varnish but I'll get it ASAP.

Zsoulless thanks I had already discovered the use of it on blood but none of the other things.

Very true, I forgot that bit.

@ Skraggy = Tactics will be up sometime tommorow night.

As to upstaging, I will try not to. You have my word on it. I have quite a bit of fluff established for my army (I am a budding writer, at least thats what I tell myself...) and I have a very good idea of what Nehekhara represents, and how different it is from its basis (ancient Egypt and Mesopotamia) which i will be posting as well as pictures.

I also have a largely completed family tree, although it is to be to posted entirely, and if i tried to scan it and post the page would be wider than normal and that would skew peoples perspectives.

I am simply a hobbyist trying ot help out my fellows, and gain comments and help from them in return.

Additionaly, do not stress on getting the varnish, etc too quickly. It is all supplementary to getting your army done. You do not have to varnish your miniatures for instance, it is just the paintjob will be more durable if you do.
Well thanks you've been helpful and I'll make sure to follow your blog as it sounds awesome.

You are very welcome. I will continue to watch your blog as well. When I post the tactical advice, I will place a link in this thread for you.
Although I accomplished some painting last week I am waiting until next weekend to do an update as last week only brought a few finished skeletons.

cool stuff. been working on my tactica. i havent even gotten through lord choices yet!

off topic, but may i ask what game your romans are for?
They are for Roman ancient battles, I am taking a little bit of a break from them but may paint up a unit of legionaries in a month or two.

eading throught his gnoblog for the first time, I saw the first pics of the WIP Ushabti and started thinking how good those models would look with a white ethereal glow....but enough on that. A cool little list you've come up with, I would go with the Liche Priest suggestion but it's just personal taste really. I like the colour schemes too. Coming along niceley :)

So here's my long overdue update. I actually had the skeletons painted up last week but was experiencing problems with my camera, below are pics of my 7 new skeletons and finished chariot.
Anyways shadowburn I was looking through my book and really am starting to like the barrow kings fluff.

Very cool items you have there. the chariot is especially awesome.

I would suggest trying to shade the bronze with delvan mud if it seems a bit bright. it looks fine, but pictures are never like real life.

Barrow kings eh? I have some suggestions for you, if you care about mixing/matching manufacturers or not could be a factor in what I say though, so do you care?

No not at all, in fact I welcome getting some alternative products.

Well then i would definatly suggest mantic games skeletons and catapults. Possibly also thier wight like models (called revanents, soon to be released in febuary). See here:

http://www.manticgames.com/Shop-Home/Undead/Warhost-Detachments/Product/Undead-Omens-of-Death-Detachment.html

Mantics stuff looks great and for the price you cannot beat them, at least IMO. If you liked Evil dead three, or "army of darkness" as it is know (awesome movie) then you'll like the skellies.

I'm currently collecting thier elves and saving for one of the undead deals.

Reaper also has a couple nice figs for characters.

Have a great weekend Skraggy my man. i'll be posting at some point as well.
UPDATE!!

Below are pictures of 5 new skeleton warriors, the final 5 should be completed in a week or so. Also below are pictures of my ogre hunter I just painted for the painting competition and I figured I'd post it here.
I played a 1500 game against vampire counts and pulled a marginal victory last week, the value of a tomb scorpion has been forever raised in my mind as in this game it killed a varghulf without taking a wound.

Some nice looking skellies you have there skraggy. I agree that tomb scorps are awesome. try popping them up and mage hunting!
Well hello again, sorry about length of absence as I was on vacation. Today I finished the skeleton unit and should have pics up soon. In other news I have gone on a revamping phase and have started repainting my dwarf army and already have 10 warriors redone to my current painting standards. My long term plan is to redo my dwarf army (purchase lord on shieldbearers, thane, 10 quarrellers, 15 hammerers, and a cannon as well as repainting almost my entire army and selling unused models) redo my ogres (purchasing a bsb and repainting almost everthing) finishing my roman army (not too much here just need to purchase and paint two units) and finally finish my tomb kings (not sure how large or what I need yet) and sadly I think I am going to sell my empire army as I don't like playing as them and don't like painting them.

So I should have updates coming up with more than just tomb kings.

Alrighty here is a diverse update for you. Below are pictures of my first 12 repainted dwarf warriors (I ordered sculpted bases for them but haven't arrived yet, however they are on my new modular movement trays) my dwarf bsb, my finally finished unit of 20 skeleton warriors, and a skirmishing cav guy from my roman army. I also started assembling my next two chariots. In other news I played a 1500 point game with TK against high elves and got a marginal victory, my dwarfs however solidly lost to brettonians in a 2250.

On the BK front, mantic released thier revanents I mentioned earlier. go check em out!
Ok - some terrible quality pics there, probably taken with a phone of some kind, but we've all been there so we'll forgive you I'm sure ;)

Looking good - maybe a layer or two of highlighting more and they'd look even better. keep this stuff coming it's nice to see. Also it's nice to see a gnoblog with so many projects on the go, it's promising and interesting to more readers :) Good times
