Ogre a perfect tournament army

Whoever says ogres are weak and not a tournament army is a lier, i came 2 out of 50 in a tournament competition.  They are excellent, i have beat many armies.

Dwarfs, got smashed.
Chaos, lost badly,
Dark Elve, struggled, but won,
High elves, won,
Empire, the longest battle, the best and i won, thanks to the luck of the dice.
Wood Elves, totally wiped out,
Lizardmen, tough, not tough enough,
Skaven, let just say they are crawling in their tunnels again.
Those are the armies i have played against, in the end i lost to orcs, smashed them troughout the game, but their low cost models and at least 6 times more models then me, i got outnumbered, there was hardly anything i could do.

I have used
6 bulls,
4 ironguts,
4 leadbelchers,
24 gnoblars,
3 butcher, need at least 2,
2 maneaters,
1 tyrant,
gnoblar trappers and the scrap launcher.

Ogres are a fun army to collect, you have to loose many times to see how your units are going to operate.  I have lost 8/9 first games.  Then after those i have won the following 26/27 games.  it is an ok beginner army, rules to remember are sometimes hard, but once you get to use to it, explore different strategies and tactics, you have to use a bit of logic, the more you play the better you get, does not matter how many times you loose, a loss is important step to the following victories ahead.

Could you explain a bit about how you play your army - I'm mostly interrested in how the low amount of ogres work, aswell as how the two maneaters are doing and ofcourse, the scraplauncher..

as one of you guys mentioned on this forum, have a gnoblar regiment and 6 bulls deploy them to battle the enemy, while moving your  other troops, maneaters on the sides smashing the opponent, on the other corner, have a hunter and two butchers, smash the opponents on that corner and slowly start enclircling your enemy from the corners, at this time the gnoblars would be all gone and then you move your leadbelchers between the middle and the corner, do the same with the ironguts on the other side, and have a butcher and your tyrant attack the middle, and the scraplauncher at the back of the tyrant.  This way you have maneaters pounding your enemy in the back on one side and your hunter and two butcher doing the same on the other, the leadbelchers and ironguts will help, and the enemy will be in a sandwich situation, you will have on one side maneaters attacking from the back, with bull attacking from the fornt, on the other side the same thing, hunter and butchers from the back while ironguts attack from the fornt, your tyrant as everyone are so afraid of him can do just fine, with the help of a butcher there is nothing to worry about. I have used this tactic against the empire and won, it was a very harrd game though because empire cannons and their cavalry preety much stuffed mine gnoblars and bulls units.  But it was worth it, i bashed the units on side encircled them, trapped them in the sandwich, the empire volley guns were useless as mine ogre moved inches from them ans smashed them into metal pieces, i have destroyed 2 cannons with the scraplauncher and 2 with mine tyrant and the butcher.  Ofcourse i use different units against different armies, but only slight changes.   As much as i hate gnoblars i must admit that their low cost is very useful, sacrificing them and the bulls is hard, but to win you will have to do so.
I first chose ogre because i like the look of the models and they were fun army to play with, then gradually after so many rewarding losed it turned into a winning army that i am proud of and very happy with my 2nd place and would not change my army for any other.  If i get time, i will post more clearer tactics for you all.

Incidentally, welcome aboard, Hellas.

The general consensus on Ogres is that they can't stand up to competitive play, or at the very least that they don't YET, and it is too early to tell. By competitive play, we usually mean WAAC armies. Australia has a fairly good culture when it comes to this. We also don't have such a high proportion of hardened hobbyists.

If you look at the sort of armies/players in either the UK GT, or pretty much any US tournament on the tournament circuit, there are always quite a few a) WAAC armies, and b) players behind them who have been playing the game for 15+ years. Australia just doesn't have many of those people. The players that take to the field with an Empire gunline or a Skaven SAD list in Australia tend to be relatively inexperienced young 'uns with the tactical analysis skills of my desklamp (it's seen a lot of battles, but didn't understand a damn thing...).

I say this not to diminish your achievement in any way (it's still absolutely huge that you placed this highly in an open tournament), but to give you an insight into why people (including myself) make those comments about Ogres. Ogres did come 12th in one of the UK GT heats recently, so it will be interesting to see how he does in the finals. Give it a year or so of people working out how to make the army list work best, and you could be right...

yeah ogres are a great tournament army . I went to Edinburgh conflict (Scotland) and came 4th out of 90 people my first tournament and i hadnt had alot of time to practice and gain expeirience considering they were only realesed 4 months before conflict and when youve got to paint a 1500 point army to a resonable standard there isnt alot of time for gaming .yeh i also got Best General award which i was very pleased with .l

I used the following :

1 bruiser with 4 bulls
1 butcher with 7 ironguts
5 bulls
4 leadbelchers

and came 4th???

I salute you, with that list you must have either played one hell of a good game on the day, or else the dice gods where with you my friend.

Yes, he is a real good painter too, he painted all of his ogres excellently, but left his gnoblars undercoated, he said he hates them that he cannot paint them, but in the games he uses them, weird guy.
He plays a strange but excellent style, encircles his enemies and traps them, like he said in a sandwich, but weird thing is that you hardly realise, the opponents hardly realise what is taking place on the battlefield, while they are busy knocking his gnoblars, he slowly starts moving away, and in a matter of time, he is in control, and the opponent is shocked, even i have not realised it, and i have watched heaps of his games.

For our members not based in Sydney, Ingleburn is an isolated outer suburb with little else but an industrial estate, a cluster of mainly military families with ties to nearby Holsworthy army base, and the Australasian HQ of GW (speaking as one who has worked there).

I hope that both of you esteemed gentlemen will be taking your Ogres on to the broader tournament scene in Sydney.  It appears that there could be quite a few of us bearing the Banners of the Big Blokes.

I just saw pics of somebody's MASSIVE Skaven horde (this was huge even by skaven standards) that he was taking to Dogcon. Very well painted and converted. It was awe inspiring.

I wish I had the funds to come up for a few of the Sydney tournaments. There is very little going on in Melbourne (well... there's Conflict... and dammit I'm going to enter!).

First of all do not get angry, second Cetnik, got it wrong, i have no idea why he said ingleburn, probably because we were talking about how all the gw arrives at ingleburn.  Third of all, the tournament was held at Penrith, at the place called the emperors legions.  So don't have to get all angry, ok.

I don't think Bobbi was getting angry... It sounded like he was being very polite.

I honestly think you should take part in some of the bigger tournaments (like Leviathon and Dogcon). I suspect you will find it both a baptism of fire, and an incredible learning experience.

Discussing tactics at one of these with Bobbi the Gnobbi and our other Sydney members could be really good. You've had a good placing, with some interesting tactical ideas - don't be so defensive.

As Groghog was able to see, you read anger where there was none.  And starring in an in-house at the Emperor's Legions in Penrith is a considerable move on from a GW staff event at Ingleburn (about a two, possibly three hour move on if you're catching Sydney trains ).

Dogcon (in North Sydney, 2250pt armies) is being played on the weekend after the Australia Day holiday, but they closed the books a couple of weeks ago when they hit 90 entries (and just before I could finally nominate).  Cancon (Canberra, 2000pts) is being played for the 3 days after Oz Day (ie, starting on the Friday), and will inevitably attract around 40 players.

Leviathon is a 2250pt event which will be held somewhere around Blacktown (or in a nearby western suburb of Sydney) and will be held either the weekend immediately before or after Anzac Day.  It will draw around 30-40 players, and if it's anything like last year's show it will be both of a good standard of play and a lot of fun.

I know that Geoff Traish (arguably Australasia's best Warhammer player - although around 6 or 7 others could equally claim that distinction)(and Geoff would not be so up himself as to do so himself) and I will both be running Ogres there, and I've heard that there may be anything from three to five other Ogryn hordes coming as well.

So, if you two blokes are up for it (and it is very much in your neck of the woods, especially compared to my home in Sutherland), that would mean that for possibly the first time ever Ogres would be the most numerous army at a mainstream Australian tournament.

Hence my invite to you both.  Worth contemplating, huh?

By saying two, you mean Cetnik as well, hey, he does not know how to play, he just watched the games i played with ogres.  Blacktown is preety close, to me, on the 27th, perfect time.  Just need to organise my units.
