Gutchef's Recipies For Disaster

original thread ↗

I started reading the forum when looking for a way to make the rhinox cav.  and I was hooked.  Been paintiing off and on for 15 years, more off though.  The OK army intrigued me.  They worship the big mouth.  Thier shamans are butchers.  One of their characters drag a big pot chained to his back.  And, me being a chef, couldn't resist anymore.

First list I made was chef themed.  Had Skrag, 2 butchers, modled my IG to have whisks, a rolling pin, and meat mallet, my bulls have black pants w/ chili peppers.  I even had a halfling hot pot.
Then I started playing them. Not what I was expecting.  The stronghold taught me the different thinking I needed.  I was used to WoC, charge and fight.  OK ain't like that.

Then Lolo the Red introduced the gnoblar special character competition.  Though, I can do that.  In a month, hell ya.  I thought of using one of my mounted gnoblars on the OLD OLD DE wardogs.

That was a start.  What about a gnoblar on a gorger?  Stat line like Skarsnik,  1 set of wounds, 1 toughness.  So I took an old treeman character, Duruthu, i think, I had laying around.

and turned it into this.

I figured I could expand this new fondness into a gnoblar horde.  I got the rules from shanty town and started painting.  I spent 2 1/2 weeks doing hand and weapon swaps, using empire, chaos marauder, dark elf, and beastmen bits.  I got them all primed and had just under 200 models, including 30 snotlings, which I planned on using as gnoblar fighters.

these are after painting for about 20 hours over 2 weeks.

and here are some close-ups of some of my favorites.

The whole army is base coated  and dipped in quickshade.  to finish this many in enough time to play before 2012, I needed a short-cut.
With these, my gnoblar horde is started and well on it's way to it's first game by November's end.

All for now.  Thx for reading.

After all, painting 100 night goblins is something you do in the morning just before you are off to work.

And I think you missed a 0 when you wrote 11 armies. The correct nr should be 110 armies I would think, based on your painting speed.
For something a little different.  Some chaos I did abot 8 years ago.

giant..  never quite finished him though....

the old Chosen rules Nurgle warriors

The musician

The Standard bearer

And a converted Deamen Prince

His flail up close

Thx for looking.

Today was very productive.  I finished another 23 individual models, and got 90 magnetized and did the bases.  My mounted gnobos on the DE dogs are done, although the bases I made from balsa wood are not even, they fit on a small movement tray one way.

Total since I started the gnobo horde 3 weeks ago...
 - 54 RnF - magnets
 - 30 snotlings - magnets
 - 10 PBR
 - 5 mounted on dogs (gonna use these to bulk RnF, on 20x40 mm)
 - 7 trappers
 - 1 honcho on rhinox (my special character for the competition few months back)
 - and 9 reaper pumpkins that I plan on using as trappers

plus my 30 or so from my ogre army, I just may be able to scrounge up enough for a game this week.  ONly 1K, but it's something.

Re-wrote my list, getting rid of 2 honchos, 1 GF and 1 flinger units, and included 3x20 LGits.

Thx

My wife says I cheat at games; I don't cheat, I just don't learn all the rules!

First GAME!!! 1K vs lizzies. he had EoG, 15 saurus, 2x10 skinks, razadon and 4 terradons. I had 2x 20 GF, 2x 10 flingers, 2x 20 GL, 2x 20 manbiters, 4 honchos w/ purple stone (which I foregot about), 1 GTS, horn and tooth.

Highlights...
1 GL charged and held saurus for 4 combats and broke and dead. I chased down the razadon w/ MB. Was flank charged by and beat terradons, and chased them down!! (they fled 4 inches on 3d6). I flank charged and beat EoG, failed to wound though, and it held for the rest of the game. Stupid stubborn thingy... I managed to kill the priest and the crew.

Final tally- he had 652 left on the board, and I had 660!!! I know it's a draw, but I killed more, damnit!!

I learned...
- GL are cool. the rerolls held them vs the saurus for almost 2 turns. I did no wounds, but I only lost 1 or 2 a turn, and kept tying or losing by 1 on the break.
- I need a scraplauncher. ranged template would be good. higher strength good too.
- remember who is where. whith all the units and characters, I got lost for the first turn or 2 as to who is where and what the unit was in the first place. They all look the same!!!

Game 1 down. It was fun.

The gnoblars sound awesome! a 4 on 3d6 poor guy , by GL do you mean LG (lucky gits?) they sounded awesome holding up the saurus for 4 turns! If you were playing another army(without cold-blooded/stubborn) you would have wiped them out! Well Done!
I have a spacious box now Shame the leadbelchers use me for target practice.... But they'll never him me they're so bad, they've already blown themselves up!

It's been a while...

Picked up 200 more bases for my gnoblar horde, and 1/2  are almost done.  I do my bases first then add the finished models to them.  I also did my other 2 rhinox cav bases.  2 or 3 more colors for those.  The RR themselves are 4-6 colors from being finished.

here is the first RR

they are all made from a "how to" I found in the Halfling Cookbook when I frist discovered this forum.

Uberaris's Bull Rhinox Rider tutorial (pic heavy)
http://ogrestronghold.com/forum/index.php?PHPSESSID=9c439ff828df3cb0a0fa1169d92a6350&topic=5674.0

It was quick and fairly easy to follow.  I replaced the majority of the GS applications w/ Aves Studios Apoxy sculpt.  $15 for enough to do all 3 and still have over half of it left.

This pic is before I added stuff that a RR would have to carry w/ him. Old black orc banner, the one w/ the dead dwarf, and a huge barrel hanging from the other side.  They both fit just right so it looks liuke the rider has his feet resting on them.

More pics in a few.

OOHHhh it's been a while...

So, it's been really hot out this summer in the midwest US, and I've had some time to work on a few things.

I picked up 2 of these pig thingys a few years ago..

and discovered that they are about the same size as a rhinox!
Can you say, scratch-built scraplaunchers!!

First I had to cut a chunk of wood into a charriot base and hollow out part of it so the pig's base can sit flush w/ the wood.

I constructed the main part of the scrappie out of crafting sticks and wood glue.  and it holds up very well.  I've dropped them durring the final stages, and nothing broke! (which is always a good thing).  I made 2 different styles, because no 2 scraplaunchers should look the same..

When it came to the "launching" part, a catapult seemed a bit big for the base.  I settled on the gunpowder method.  The mortar from the Empire line seemed a bit too big, and just happened upon a package of "Gunpowder Units from the American Revolution" the other day at my local hobby shop.  And they work wonderfully..

Put them all together, and you have...

I have to putty the connector pieces, like fur and get some chain in there too.  Shouldn't take that much more time.  And get some gnoblars on there too.
The longest part so far was the overnight drying of the glue.  still a bit wet after a few hours, so letting it cure for 12 hours very recommended.

Thx for looking.  C&C always welcome.

I just do camo green and dip them after everything has 1 color on it.  Makes painting 500+ models go SO much faster.

Nice to see another gnoblar army around here, Gutchef. And especially cool to see other snotlings. They're nice models, aren't they?
- 5 fighters and 1 trapper; the beginning of a vast gnoblar army. A gnoblar revolutions is at hand!
the best thing about using them in a horde is the ease of painting them and slapping them on a 20mm base.   And the number of poses that there are makes them seem without number.  I'm finding them from the late 80's and a few earlier than that.  I've got about 100 more to do, that will be one horde worth of fighters in, hopefully, under 6 hours.

thanks for the feedback!

I took a few pics of my horde all layed out, just so I could see the insanity that I bought...

I give you, The Horde!!

Total count is just over 600 models, including 4 hordes of 50, around 30 "trappers", 35+ PiggyBack Riders, 70 + Manbiters (alot of fun conversions there) and 40 flingers.

WIP lord on "rhinox"

and another..

Trappers and scrappies..

Hero on a shieldbearer (crappy pic, though..)

C&C always welcome!!

that's it for now.

My wife says I cheat at games; I don't cheat, I just don't learn all the rules!

I got a game in the other night w/ the store manager's dwarfs. His list was ready for a specific opponent (WE) and he swapped out a cannon for an organ gun.

He had: Lord and BSB in hammerers x 30, thane in warriors x 20, 2x 20 thunderers, 20 warriors w/ some kind of ward save, and the organ gun.

I had: HH, scales, fencers blades, Honcho helm (never saw combat)
2x HH on rhinox each w/ dragonbane item (he swapped out the flaming cannon, so these were useless)...
10 honchos w/ flails amongst my units,
3 more honchos w/ rhinox horn (never used), ogrehead banner (saved the flank from NOT moving) and each had flails.

3 or 4 x20 fighters
3 or 4 x10 flingers
2x20 manbiters (foregot about razor standard AND discipline standard; but they didn't need it!)
2x30 lucky gits
20 PiggyBack Riders
1 scrappie
8 trappers

deployment mistakes... I didn't know that you could fire slings 2 deep, so my flingers were ranked 1x10, wating up alot of manuverability frontage. My trappers were out of sight and out of mind until his first turn when he turned thunderers to deal with them. I also deployed in basically 3 rows: flingers in the front, fighters and manbiters in the 2nd, and gits and scrappie last. It wasn't intentional, just I started to rum out of room!

I moved everything that didn't bicker. unfortuneately, 2 flinger units did, so alot was stuck. scrappie killed 2 thunderers!!

he moved and got ready

more bickering, this time from the general's unit of manbiters. 2nd turn of them not moving. flingers killed 1 warrior.

He killed 2 flingers and 2 fighters and moved foreward.

I waited for him to charge, thinking I could kill something with slings... wrong!!

He made 1 of 3 charges (not the hammerers!) into flingers, killed them, broke them and into fighters for my turn 4.

fighters lost combat, ran but were not caught! Set up for manbiters w/ 3 honchos. both rhinox charged hammerers (mistake) in the front. lord challanged, 1 dead HH. other HH did nothing, and hammerers killed him dead. they reformed to take on gits or last HH's manbiters. Thane's unit charged gits, tied. VLG acceped thane's challange and wounded him w/ nothing in return!!

I got my manbiters into a flank charge w/ a unit of warriors, broke them, and ran short.  They rallied and I charged them again, broke them again and ran them down.  That was the highlight of the match for me.

other stuff happened... cannot remember it all. ultimately, I had broke and caught 2 of 3 of his big units and both of his thunderers were at half. I lost 2 fighter units, 2 flinger units, 3 trappers, both rhinox and my scrappie. That last one shouldn've happened but he said "Go for it all, it;s the last turn". I charged the hammerers in the front and it died died died.

Totals... He lost 694, I lost 510.

VICTORY FOR THE GNOBLARS!!!!!!

Lessons learned:
- do NOT accpet a challange that you have no business being in. His lord maxed overkill on VLG and that was the big difference in that combat. I lost by 6, which could've been only 4 w/ HH and bsb nearby. between higher L and all the rerolls I might've stuck it out.
- fingers in 2x5!!
- Remember magic items. +2L may have saved a flank.
- If you use multiple heroes in the same unit, have enough to cover the front rank.  Make them kill each hero individually.

that's all for now.

Hey Gutchef, I really love your Gnoblars (as well as the rest of your troops), cool style and lots of character.

I was wondering, do you know where I could find the army rules for an all Gnoblar army? I know it was in one of the White Dwarf magazines but I don't remember which, or is there any other way I can get a hold of those rules?

Thanks a bunch,
Triddion
We at the Tower are scrapping together a "new" list, and that can be found
http://z6.invisionfree.com/The_Gnoblar_Tower/index.php?showtopic=279&st=30&#last

and the old rules, I can PM or mail you.  WD 308 I think.. or is it 302...  somewhere in there.

Wow! That's a really impressive gnoblar army you have.

I like the shield bearer gnoblar especially :) I did something similar for my Ogre BSB.
