The army-composition competition!! The WINNERS!!!!
The time has come!!!! Yes, the time for another competition!!!
Though, this time you are not going to be evaluated on your painting or conversions skills, but on your tactics and army-building skills.
So, this is what you all have to do to enter the new competition: 1-post, by replying in this thread, your 2000 pts army list of Ogres (and not more than 2000 pts. Any army with more then 2000 pts will be deleted); 2-describe, briefly, what your tactic is going to be, by filling in the following fields: -where your characters are going to be placed; -what is the role of each unit/character; -what is your general tactic.
One post per person (and no edits of the posts: whoever edits his own post will be disqualified!!!) Posting will end June 12th.
When the competition is over, all members will PM me and tell the three armies they like the most and why. Voting will end June 26th.
The winner wont win shiny prizes... but will have the glory to be nominated Best Tactician of the forum.
The 10 most voted armies will be posted in a sticky thread named The best armies of the kingdom: 2000 pts, and will be used as reference for all other members.
If all goes well, there are going to be future competitions regarding 1500 pts and 1000 pts armies.
So, start creating your army, and be ready, cos the tactics competition is now officially open. Cheers
P.S. please, read the rules regarding posting the armies, and please find the time to fix the army, making it easy and simple to read (especially if you import it from armybuilder), before posting it in this thread.
*Edit: since there are too few participants up to date, I decided to extend the contest for another week. I also thought that 3 votes would be better, instead of only 1...*

rule number one for ogres is that, in order to win, you need to hit the enemy lines like a tornado - as quickly as possible with a hard hit. To do this you must maintain control of your units and move them in concert. This simple army list is geared to doing just that as effieicntly as possible and thereby take advantage of the ogres' greatest strengths. One of the greates weaknesses of OK is low leadership, and through my choice of items/bignames and character placement, I endevour to counteract that as best I can.
character placement and role
the tyrant goes in with the unit of 5 ironguts (with standard and lookout). His job is to be the focal part of the army, and then to hammer into the enemy lines. With the kineater bigname he can keep all units near him under control (as much as ogres can, at any rate). With the tenderiser and a re-rollable armour save he is a match for any opposing general (and, frankly, most units) on his own, and he can charge out of the ironguts if need be.
the butcher with the laurels rides in the second irongut unit. His job is to help the tyrant maintain a battle line by operating on his flank with this unit and buffing all units within range (generally the 2 units of ironguts and their 2 screening units of bulls). He is the "buff" butcher. The laurels give him a chance of maintaining the line and he tries to ensure toothcraker spells on the bull screen units as a priority - that stubbornness really helps.
the second butcher (with the bangstick) is the offensive butcher. His job is to help the trappers and leadbelchers soften up opposing units through use of the bangstick and bonecruncher/braingobbler spells. He is on his own help him get LoS and to help his maneauverability - he can join a unit of bulls if need be and will still buff those around him as required. the butcher with the bangstick will be on his own.
what the units are used for
the 3 units of 3 bulls are my first wave troops and screens for the irongut units. They can be a force to be reckoned with when buffed, but are also sacraficial units to try and get the opponent out of position. I never expect them to survive a battle, but they can help me clear a path.
the irongut units are the powerhouses of the army, there job is to win fights that the bulls have started.
the leadbelchers operate on each flank of the army and have different roles depending on the army I'm up against - either flank protection against fast cav, or to soften up a front line against an incoming charge of bulls. With teh bellowers and the bull units near them they can play bait and switch quite happily too!
the gorgers are used to get mages and war machines and often work as a pair to minimize the disadvantage of each only having a 90 degree LoS.
the gnoblar fighters also have multiple uses 1) if I'm feeling unadventurous, park each one in a table quarter 2) more usually, support the bulls and ironguts by adding ranks in combats.
I tend to deploy them as far forward as I can, in line with the bull units - when everything moves up the generally end up in the right positon to help out the second wave of ironguts (right on cue)
I never negelect my gnoblars - although they sometimes neglect me.
The one oddity to my list is the massively inflated size of my trapper unit (double the minimum). this unit can be strung out in a line if the terrain doesn't support scouting - but given its size it can be far more than just a thorn in the enemies side. It doesn't have to multi-shot to still get 16 shots off, so it'll be hitting on 4's rather than 5's - but can also decide to roll 32 dice instead....
it's job is to either: 1) harass a flank 2) get a war machine or mage 3) hide in terrain midway up the board and block enemy units from marching near it 4) jump out near an enemy unit and go for broke to hold them up or support the first wave of ogres.
there you go - and my record so far is pretty good!

Gorger 75 pts.
Grand Total=1999 pts.
My characters will be deployed as follows...
The Tyrant will be in the unit of Ironguts with the War Banner, the Butcher with the Halfling Cookbook will be in the same unit of Ironguts as the Tyrant, and the Butcher with the Skullmantle will be with the second unit of Ironguts.
The roles of each character/unit...
The Tyrant will obviously be the main powerhouse of the army, hence The Tenderizer; it's too good not to have. I was originally going to have the unit he is with have the Rune Maw, but I figured that once my opponent has a spell redirected upon a unit of gnoblars, they're not going to cast spells on that unit anymore. With that being the case I'd rather have there be much more hidden risk in casting on the beefy unit of Ironguts with two characters, hence the stigma of mis-casting much more often, and have the general have a bit more of protection. The Butcher with the cookbook with be the 'buff' mage, and the butcher with the Skull Mantle will be the more offensive mage: casting braingobbler and what-not.
The units of bulls will be pretty much running interference and setting up my oppenents for the charges from the Ironguts.
Gnoblars will be providing ranks if possible, but mostly acting as tarpits. Most likely they will be set-up all on one flank to act as a really unattractive area for an opponent to attempt to move through.
Trappers will be scouting if possible and doing the usual trapper thing, marchblocking.
Leadbelchers will be set-up on the flank opposite of the Gnoblar Fighters, and work in tandem, one unit running up, fire their cannons, get charged, flee, then rally and reload. Then the other unit will do the same. They will also thin-down enemy units before I charge them if the opportunity presents itself.
Gorgers are there to do the usual Gorger thing, eat warmachine crews, eat mages if possible, and eat anything else that will become a target of opportunity. They will be working in tandem to cover each other, should my opponent try to avoid one of them.
General Tactics...
...are to simply do the MSU-esque type of fighting that ogres can pull-off. Set-up my oppenent for a multiple charge if I can, and use the high movement rate of the ogres to make my army rather amorphous and difficult to predict, making it easier for me to take advantage of my smaller amount of numbers, higher amount of close combat capability, and not engaging my opponent unless it is on my terms.
Vote for me, or I'll eat your favorite gnoblar!
I can't think of a whitty name for it.

Characters First of all my tyrant, I will put him in a unit of ironguts like all good tyrants should be with. he is good at removing anoying heroes from battle in challanges and if there are none then he can just hack away at the units. My bruiser s there as some one to take out things like war machine crews he is on his own and so is very manoverable he isnt the highest ranking character so won't attract any unwanted attention but will be able to kill any anoying heros who like to take a more passive role and hang around there war machines. The Bucher is well hes a butcher i had to have one in the army how can you resist those 3+ to cast roles and with the halfling cook book makes for one nasty not so little fellow he will be independent i dont want him with any of my units so he can get into a position where he can cast spells on the maximum units friend or foe.
Troops Troops are always key for me in a ogre army iron guts are so good at genrally smaing enemy units and I always take a champion musician but not a standard as the +100 victory points are to much to give away. the Ogre bulls are very ussfal with there bull charges at +1 strength for haveing a bonus rank as I will have them in two ranks of three. I genrally keep my ogre bulls in the center of my army as they are fast but not so manoverable. Gnoblars i keep in a 2 by 12 line so i can get a lot of shoots of from sharp stuff but arnt giving up there rank bonus they also make a good meat sheald as ogre arnt large targets a line of Gnoblars may slow them down but dose keep them alive.
Speical and Rare Leadbelchers are sooo good in my sqauds of 4 of which i have two thats a possibilty for 80 in one shooting phase and then i can charge them in and destroy whats left from the powerful shotsi like to keep them at the flanks as they might not be so manoverable but if any thing comes close theycan shoot them and then withstand the awated charge if there is any thing left at the end. Gnblar scraplancher can devestate the enemy lines espesially agianst something like empire or orcs and arnt as vanrable to combat as most war machines are. Maneaters I keep them in Two sqauds as one can go at the front of the army and will attract a lot of fire keeping the rest of my army safe from enemy fire and if he dose survive then can do a lot of killing. the second one is there because of the other one as this one i want to survive and so the other one dosen't give his life in vain this one can chop up the midgits who shot his mate.
Well I think that covers ever thing good luck with the forum and thanks

I find this a great idea, specially, it's all about fun. Here is one of my army lists.
Tyrant -1 Luck gnoblar -Tenderiser -Wyrdstone -Fistful of laurels
Setup You want opening's when setting up terrain. Sometimes I will just place them in a corner that way te middle line between both sides is open. I can also give an advantage is you have scouts. Depending what armies I will be facing, I want placing terrain to my advantage. A good tactic I use is by placing a piece of terrain about 10" in a corner at the players side. That way, you can close in from each sides forcing him to react. Always have a plan to figure out what unit you really want to break first and which of your unit can get the job done.
Deployment Ogres must get into combat in round 2 or 3 but you can't leave your gnoblars behind because they will help alot. In my case, my big hitters are the ironguts full command with tyrant. I will setup gnoblars at first (one to at least protect the ironguts/tyrant flank. If there are flying units, I wll leave a unit of leadbelchers close by the gnoblars just incase. ANother use of my leadbelchers is next to my big unit to shoot and weaken his unit before the come into combat, beside they are also great to get that flank bonus. I also want to keep my scrapluncher inside 12 inches of my general incase of Ld. My 3 ironguts will be placed away from the center and close to the edge. They have a good leadership and armour save vs some shooting and you want to get them up there ASAP! Because you want your opponent to react. I my case, I have 9 units so it is the advantage to get his unit flanks. I'm saying, if my ogres can't hardly get rank bonuses neither should he, In this case, if i'm going down, then my opponent is going down with me hahahhahahah
I will also sacrifice a unit of gnoblars or bulls to get my opponent where I want him to be if he charges and I flee or attacks and pursuit. In some case I will use the leadbelchers to move and shoot then flee which in this case, I will atempt to rally them to reload.
I will have my butcher close by the units but use them with offense magic at first and then the remain in play spell.
Things to keep in mind -If you flee with a unit of ogres, visualise where it will end up. Will it cause a panic test to single characters or smaller units? -Scrapluncher is great to take out skirmishers since you don't have the -1 to hit and cause killing blows. -By using gorgers, as a distraction, I will try to remind my opponent that the unbreakable gorgers will be coming out and there will be no place to hide. (I noticed my opponents reacts and starts to move his units). If able, always keep gorgers in pairs.
May you belch your way to victory!

Uh.. uh!!! can I enter, can I enter too... ?!?!?!
Ok, this is my standard tourney list:
Ikimik Greathead Tyrant (in the IG unit) General; Luck Gnoblar; Great Weapon; Heavy Armour; Wyrdstone Necklace; Jade Lion
Tsuaf Peedrinker (butcher) (in the IG unit) Fistful of Laurels Bangstick
Dualc pukeater (butcher) (in the bull unit) Siege Breaker
5 Pit Bulls Standard
4 Crushers (IGs) Standard
3 Da Heavy weights (Bull Rhinox Riders) 2ndWeapon; Heavy Armour; Standard War Banner
3 Maneaters Heavy Armour
1 Scraplauncher
20 Gnoblars
Casting Pool: 6 Dispel Pool: 4 Models in Army: 37 Total Army Cost: 1995
As you can see, I will put Tyrant and bangstick buthcer in the IG unit (though the bancgstick buthcer will be able to move out of the unit if needed); the siegebreaker butcher in the Bull unit.
The main tactic is Deny Flank (I'll be breif). This tactic is based around having a hard hitting part of the army fielded on a far side of the field (this will be the BRR, the Bulls and the IG unit).
Such part of the army will have a flank protected by the outerlimits of the field and by a tarpit unit on the other side: this role is for my meneaters, that with HA, Ld8 and stubborn will most likely remain steady quite some time. The MEs will most likely get killed in the process, but as long as the other 3 main units do their job, loosing 3 MEs is a price I can afford pay.
The last part of the army will be scraplouncher and gnoblars, for a redirecting tactic, in order to harras the enemy, and distract him from chraging the MEs and the other stronger units. (plan B can see the Scrappy run along the MEs to support them).
Such army will be deployed in more or less half the fielding zone (having the scraplouncher in the middle of the field). This way I can keep my units near one another, under the general's influence.
cheers

Character Placement
Obviously the tyrant and skullmantle butcher in the same unit of 4 Guts and the Bangstick butcher in the larger Guts unit. I prefer running characters in units to offer them some form of protection for the first turn or 2. They remain fairly flexable however and will leave the units if tacticaly sound! (I will tend to pull the bangstick butcher out of the unit prior to combatif needs be!) Just a note regarding the tyrant...I don't give him the tenderiser anymore as I found that generally he would be avoided as much as possible and 50 points that isn't used in battle can be used more effectively elewhere!
Units/Characters roles
The tyrants unit is the main powerhouse of the army. With warbanner and skullmantle in the same unit the chances of winning combat and breaking the enemy are increased. the butchers main role in this unit is to keep the guts buffed (Usually with toothcracker as a T6 tyrnat and butcher is nothng to be sniffed at and stubborn on LD9 is awesome)
The second guts unit stays within 6" of the tyrant to benefit from his kineating ability, with the bangstick butcher buffing his own unit. This butcher tends to leave the unit at some point in the game to take up a position behind the fighting line to keep him safe from challenges!
I try to use the 2 guts unit in tandem usually being able to attack in the front with one and flank charge with the other...a nasty combination!
The unit of bulls are used primarily for baiting and fleeing leaving favourable targets for the hammers, but also prove useful for flank charges too!
The gnoblar fighters are too just generally annoy and rarely actually see combat as they will usually flee from charges (Its surprising the amount of people who are wary of the little ones!) but will get stuck into combat to support the ogres.
Trappers will try to set up as close as possible to enemy lines to march block and threaten war machines. If I am unable to scout they will be used as a screen for the first turn or 2.
The leadbelchers take position on the flank/s to protect the flanks of my guts. They will also bait and flee in the right circumstances.
The scraplauncher will remain behind the lines (within 12" of the tyrant) taking pot shots at ranked units (the more armoured the better) as it is infinitely more useful as a catapult than a chariot. I can utilise the tyrants high LD to pick and chose where the bad tempered beast will charge!
Finally the maneaters. They tend to start the battle behind other units, as in my experience, after the tyrant they are the most feared unit in the ogre kingdoms and tend to get picked on! After a turn or 2 maneavouring they are ready for the kill. I use 1 great weapon and 2 longswords as this gives the unit a bit more of a tactcal edge able to take out chariots and units alike!
General tactic
This usually depends on two things 1) the army I'm facing and 2) what mood I'm in! It will ocassionally be a deny flank with the two guts on the far right/left followed by the maneaters/ bulls/gnoblars and belchers (in that order) with the scrappie either taking up position at the back or next to the maneaters. However, I more often than not set up across the middle 2 thirds of the board with the belchers protecting the flanks and close inwards(Kind of horns af the warlord style). Two units of guts hitting the enemy at the same time is nasty (Dice depending!!lol)
General Tactics: Well to be blunt, due to the fact that this is pretty much a minimalist army, with all units being mostly minimum, it is easy to conform to whatever tactic one wants. I usually use Denied Flank or Horns of the Warlord, the latter with minimal success, lol. Obviously, it also helps that its Point Denial as well. As for setup and game movement I use a checkerboard style, much like using pawns in chess. The Gnoblars are the pawns, lol. I set the Gnoblars ahead of the ogres so they draw fire and can set bait & flee / flee & flank maneuvers.
Character Placement and Role: Tyrant: As my Ld General with Kineater and a ward save He is in general placed where he will be the most useful, where his Kineater can help and/or his Leadership. Generally he is placed near the bulk of the army, wherever I am planning on setting up the checkerboard. Butcher w/ Bangstick: Hes a floater, usually stands behind a Gnoblar unit and blasts through it, hoping to not do 5 wounds, lol. Since he is a floater he can be positioned for minimal LoS to the enemy so he can use spells, but otherwise hes a buffer/bang sticker. Butcher w/ Skullmantle: Usually placed in with the IG unit, but has options of going elsewhere much like the Banger. He is the spell caster, casting out brain gobbler and tooth cracker as his primaries hoping to cause the 1 panic tests.
Unit Placement and Role: Bulls and Gnoblars: These guys are the main body of the checkerboard formation, gnobs in front, and bulls behind. Trappers: They do as they always do, get up there and mess with the opponent. Ironguts: This is the hammer unit and the breaker unit. If my opponent has something nasty, these guys go for it, they also help to break a line, which they excel at. Leadbelchers: These guys have one role, play the flanks, I usually put one on each flank, probably about 6-8 inches from the side table edges, even if nothing is a threat, they can take quarters and they can kill fast cavalry most of the time. Scraplauncher: Ah the big lumbering behemoth. He is usually placed close to the general but sometimes off to a flank if theres something juicy there. His role is to cause some disruption. I have found some opponents with spread out against its mediocre strength template weapon to minimize it, which lets me isolate and destroy. And against dwarves it is amazingly effective against their turtle tactics. Gorger: My babies, I love these guys. They are disruption at its fullest. I love it when an opponent sends units to protect the rear or charge them that are 3x their pt value, it basically gives me pts, and if they dont send something after them, they end up holding a unit up indefinitely or killing war machines like no tomorrow.
Strengths: -Point denial, considering not too much is very expensive, it can be considered point denial. -The idea is to let the opponent only target Gnoblars, because who cares about a Gnoblar? -Lots of deployments means it is not hard to out deploy and draw deployments, especially dropping Leadbelchers first, it can be confusing. -Flexible Tyrant, letting him run around gives more leadership options. -Strong magic. Even without the 3rd butcher magic is beefy, I can generally out cast 8 dispel dice vs. a mediocre player. With 2 scrolls and 4 dice, I can generally hold off up to 2 level 2s long enough to get to combat.
Weaknesses: -Lack of hammer/strong units. Considering theres only one unit that can be considered in truth strong, well, it turns out bad against elite armies like chaos warriors. It makes movement all that much more important. -No saves, next to no saves anywhere means shooting becomes a problem,. Even with T4 they still drop like flies. -Slower than normal, true the army is reduced to a Gnoblars pace, but against all but gun lines it really isnt too bad, considering the vast majority of other armies are only but M4 as well. And the things that are faster will get chewed up if they get too close.

Yes, this is my Sledgehammer army at 2k points!
Hero's: Brusier Cathayan Longsword Heavy Armour Luck Gnoblar Great Skull Fistful of Laurels 197
5 Maneaters w/ Heavy Armour & Cathayan Longsword 1 Gorger
T.P.V: 2000 T.M.#: 70
The General Idea: This army is designed to do one thing: Slam into the opponent like a Ton of Bricks. This isn't some MSU run-around-and-get-the-flanks army. This is a SLEDGEHAMMER! You charge as fast as you can into you opponent and crush'em! The entire army is made to charge frontally, not run around and exploit flank charges. The entire point of this army is to play like an Ogre and slam into your opponent at full speed.
The Actual Tactics: This army is a little different to play then most. This build uses a kind of 'clamp' tactic. The whole plan is to use your deployment to set up your opponent for a trap! The left/centre side of the field is set up with the two units of Gnoblar Fighters in the front and the unit of Ironguts one movement tray space behind them. The right/centre side of the field has the big unit of bulls set up with the two smaller ones off to each side of the unit, much like the gnoblars on the other side of the field. The very centre of the field will have the big unit of Maneaters with the Brusier in it. They are set there to do one thing, crash into the opponent at top speed and cut the opponent into ribbons. Behind the deployed Maneaters will be the Butcher, who will cast either Trollguts or Toothcracker on the Maneaters as the situation dictates, depending on the opponent, and then whip out the death of Bonecruncher! The Butcher is a little safer from his own magic because of his Halfling Cookbook, and the Dispell Scroll is just there for magic protection. Casting buffs will be of most importance, Trollguts on the Ironguts and Bullgorger on the big unit of Bulls, then I'll let him go nuts with bonecruncher!
The whole idea is to get the Gnoblars and the small unit's of Bulls ahead of the two main units and then have them flee a charge, setting the enemy up for a big hammerblow from the big units of Bulls or Ironguts. The Maneaters are there to kill anything the Ironguts or Bulls can't handle, and to cause general havoc. Speaking of Havoc, that's the Gorger's job. I ALWAYS pop him up in the worst place for my opponent, even if it will get him killed automatically. One turn of Gorger disruption spells big problems for my opponent's whole game plan.
All in all, that's the army. Hope you all like it and vote for it!
Salute'!

I wasn't expecting nothing really, specially expensive stuff. But you won't twist my arm twice!
The best gift you can give me is a meeting with GW to make me change their mind about the bull rhinox riders being official

Not for prizes or anything but could you do some more like this but for different army sizes?
It was a great idea and very informative for new players like me.

Sure infact that was the plan, so expect an "Army Composition Competition: 1500 pts" in a week or so... First I have to figure out the prizes of the previous competition, though, and the lack of money is a big problem... plus a lot of things to do IRL made me delay the new competition.
I'll keep you posted. cheers

Hmmm.. gorger's can always be good but then again, in CA it's $35. Fortunatly, I get GW at 40% less with no tax so that helps.

By the way, is going to be any actual prizes?
I can't think of a whitty name for it.

I wanted to give the winner a prize, but my bank account said I better not.
Though, the armies that won the 2000 pts competition, will be put in a thread (and/or an article) along with the 1500 pts army and the to-be 1000 pts army competition, as reference for noobs to check and confront their armies.
When I will become rich, I will get the winner prizes, but don't hold your breath...
cheers

Ya, that's perfectly okay. I was just wondering because, it seemed to be rather unresolved.
