'Ard Boyz Report - 2nd place! (Highlights only)

There were almost 30 people at the tournie, and here is the list I played:

There was a hell of a crowd, and I got some pretty good matchups.

Round 1: Dwarves (Gunline)

When I saw it, I cringed...my weakness...CANNONS. I got to go first. I got shot up pretty hard until Skrag made it combat and started whacking people like crazy on t2. The gorgers showed up and he was more concerned about them killing his crews than my ogres destroying his units. Once the rest of the gorgers showed up I was no longer concerned with his shooting. Gorgers had to deal with some speed bumps he tried to field in the back to deal with them, but they outmaneuvered him. Skrag got up to 10 models killed and him and Gorgers were just having a field day killing everything. Dice werent that great for him, and I was doing well. I didnt manage to capture his flag (scenario rules) but all he had left was that unit and 1 warmachine w/crew at the end of the game. Result: Massacre (22 BPs)

Round 2: Lizardmen (Steggie Magic Bomb)

He went first and got off some solid spells. He fielded Lord Kroak in Temple Guard with Steggies guarding his flanks, and was using several Skink units for redirects and tactical outmaneuvaring. Very hard opponent. We beat the crap out of each other. I killed 2 Steggies, and everything else accept for Kroak, 12 Temple Guards, a mounted old blood, 3 Terradons. I only had 2 half strength IG units (characters still alive...barely), and Skrag. He got 1/2 points for most characters. He won by 750 some pts. Result: Draw (12 BPs)

Round 3: O&G (Black Orc Bonanza w/ Wyvern)

I went first. He had 6 Boltthrowers, Grimgor Ironhide in Black Orcs, and a lot of redirects, few fanatics (not as many as I expected really). My LBs knocked off an entire rank of Blackies on t2, Skrag and Butchers got some Trollguts in place, a few of his units WAAGH'ed into bad positions, and I managed to charge and overrun into his good stuff. The highlight of this game was when he tried to redirect my Tyrants IG unit with a smaller unit of Boys and misjudged the distance, causing the Tyrant to slam lopsided into his Black orcs. Grimgor wasnt in b2b so didnt get to do ANYTHING (MWA HA HA HA) - Tyrant, Bruiser, and IGs all did very well to hit, and wounded almost every roll. The dice loved me that battle. I won by 7, he broke and I ran'em down. It was all over but the crying then... he did rear-charge my Tyrants unit with Wyvern after I demolished his Black Orcs, I lost the combat by 4, rolled a 7 - rerolled from BSB and got a 3. Tyrant mopped the floor with him after he killed the back row off for me. By turn 5 he called it. The gorgers brutalized the BTs (that couldnt wound because he wasnt magic heavy at all and just could not manage to dispel TGs), and he really didnt have anything left that could do a lot of damage. Result: Massacre (24 BPs)

The only person to do better was my friend who also played lizards. He DEMOLISHED VC and Daemons and also got 2 Massacres and a Minor Victory - he beat me by ONE, yes ONE BPs to take first place away from me... grrrr......

Congrats on the 2nd place.  I too was second in our tourney today.... granted, we only had 2 players ;-)

It seems the Ogres are doing very well at the moment inspite of uber Armies, hopefully due to this website to some extent.

The lists people are using seems to be getting more diverse, so we are less predictable about what we are taking to the table.

Yea the diversity is very prominent fo rthe kingdoms, and I think this site is the biggest reason for it. We all discuss every minute detail and combination so much, that we have learned to maximize against the cheesies! If we are doing this well now, I cant wait to see how well we do when the next codex comes out!

The only thing I wanted to do was play against either Daemons, VC, and/or DEs so I can really test against the more cheesier lists. They did ok, but I think the people playing them just didnt really know the armies (or lists) very well.

Excellent achievement for the Great Maw! 

A few changes I am considering is:

1) dropping fighters to 21 each as I only used them for table quarters really - though my plan was to assist the IG units by adding ranks to the battle (13 pts free [list is 2999 as is])

2) dropping the lookout gnob, he didnt even remotely play a factor and most of the time, I actually want certain shots to target my characters as they are harder to wound (18pts)

3) dropping the luck gnoblar on the Tyrant, I seem to never use it anymore at all. I either die outright from run down, or some insto-kill weapon. I havent sacked it in literally the last 10 or more games I have played. (23 pts)

Now with that 20 pts, I am thinking about making the IGx7 unit Full Command by adding a champ. The champs really help a lot in the tournie versus shooting and making them choose during CC who they were hitting and having to roll seperately and I think another Gutlord would help protect the Butcher in that unit as well. (Not that he got into much trouble, but ya never know)

I was thinking of making enough points to put XHWs on the Bulls, but against the Dwarves and O&G especially, the str4 with Ogre Clubs wounded more consistently against RnF with -2AS than throwing an extra attack at them did. I think I am going to stick with naked bulls for a while. At one point I got a Bullgorger on them against som Dwarves on a flank, and they were negating the AS altogether with their -3 AS. It was sweet as every wound killed. Almost like having cheaper IGs!

Champs! Yes! They helped me out so much in my games.

I had a similar matchup against LM and I crushed them - nothing left of his on the table by the end of Turn4 and he had 2 Slann in TG units, 2 Engines, tons of skinks, Terradons, and 2 Salamanders.

I always use my Luck Gnobs - every game. Being able to reroll that one dice is often a CR breaker for my opponent in a challenge. Against VC it is a MUST. It helped me eat a Frostblade yesterday and my BSB survived a charge from Bloodknights for one turn longer than expected because of his.

I had great success with my Bulls also casting Bullgorger on them. 13 attacks from a unit of 3 plus champ at S5 is no laughing matter! They died in almost all my games but I expect them to.
