Hey all. I've played 8-10 games with my ogres now (most at 2000pts, a couple megabattles) and my views have altered dramatically on character choices. Originally I got all excited by the gut magic and thought multiple butchers were the way to support the Tyrant. Now, however, I find that more than 2 butchers is really useless (nothing to cast on later turns) and even 2 can be redundant (either 1 is enough or 2 isn't). Last week I tried an army with a single "scroll caddy" butcher and my Tyrant. Worked beautifully against the VC player (stopped what was the most threatening) and the extra bulls I bought sealed the massacre. Against more magical armies it could get dicey, but I think I'll try 1 Tyrant and 1 Butcher (or no butchers vs Dwarves/Khorne) for a while longer.
What do you think?

Hmmm.. well you are in the trial mode like I was but I really think that butcher's really help out the ogres. The magic missile (no armour save), tooth cracker and specially trollguts are good spells vs any army. What area in Canada are you from ?

It depends on what army I'm fighting. Normally I take two butchers a Tyrant and a Hunter for my 2000pt Army.
Psykopig09 Jan 2006
i assume for a 2000 pt army, i would take 2 butchers, just so as the ogres can keep up with magic against other armies.
In my 1500pt army, i think 2 would be a waste of points.

At 2k I would take a Tyrant, a BSB and a Butcher with the Skullmantle and a Scroll.
And the Baby Ogre said: "Someone's been eating my Gnoblars too! And they've eaten them all up!"
My gnobbos are called Dutch, Dillon, Mac, Blain and Billy

I found that 1 butcher does a good job as a scroll carrier (X2 scrolls) and if he gets any spells off it is a bonus . I just use him to stop magic harming my units to much and then when i get to combat he does nothing for the rest of the game.
Thanks Alot !

Yaroslav the Vast09 Jan 2006
I am playing between 2k and 2.5k games mostly, and so far i always have a tyrant, 2 butchers, and either a hunter or a BSB bruiser.

Thanks for the replies all. I'm surprised by the number of people using 2 butchers and a hunter as well. The idea of spending 700+ points on characters in such an essentially fragile army seems ludicrous (Only my Lizzies go over 700pts and only if I bring my Slaan). I do like the versatility a hunter brings though, and might try adding one in after a few more games. The BSB idea is another one that seems...prudent. Does anyone else have recomendations for/against a BSB?
Oh, and I live in Peterborough ON, Genghis. Smaller town but lots of Warhammer!

ogre charecters are more like small units than individuals. its how i justify it anyway

If you want to go for something completely different, try using 2 Hunters, it's great fun, although only tried it once so far, and my second Hunter is now out of commision going through a conversion process, just try it and see.

@ GreenDragon - I do like the idea of fielding three (count 'em) units of gnoblar trappers. That would really get your opponent's motor running.
With Butchers, I have tended to find (as another member put it in another thread) that either one butcher is enough, or two is not. Very few armies seem to have medium magic these days. They all have strong magic or no magic. Therefore, I just take the one.
My 2k list currently has Tyrant, Butcher, BSB. I'm toying with using a hunter, but I've been lazy and haven't actually stuck him together yet. The BSB isn't quite worth his points, so I want to switch him out for either another character (had no love from a second Butcher) or more bulls and gnoblars.

You would need 2 hunters in your army to field 3 units of trappers, yes?

At 2000 points, I take a tyrant and two butchers. I rarely find that I have excess power or dispel dice, unless I've been sloppy and none of my butchers have LOS to the enemy. I just keep casting bonecruncher and braingobbler (and the bangstick) while saving a little power for trolguts or toothcracker as well.

At 1500 I use a Bruiser and a Butcher, at 2000 I use a Tyrant and a Butcher, although sometimes I mix it up with two Butchers. I hardly ever use a BSB.

I'm not sure that you can have 2 unit of trappers. From what I saw in the rule book it's a 0-1 unit but unlimited in that unit... please correct me if i'm wrong.
At the gaming club, we must roll to see who will play against who like that no one can't make their army by knowing who he's going against.

0-1 limit normally, 1 extra unit permitted per Hunter in the army.

Nice !!! I don't feel along anymore with thoughts in my head asking myself questions when I have a family of ogres right here
