"No panic" army - MSU extreme

original thread ↗

Hi everybody!

I`ve just learned the hard way that panic can be a serious problem for an ogre army, and so I started to think how to keep that issue in check.

One possiblity that has crossed my mind was an "MSU exstreme" approach. That means: no / few units that would cause panic if destroyed, so e.g.

4 Characters, all on their own (or perhaps one with the jade lion in a unit)
2x1 maneater or two giants, or one each
Scraplaunchers (2?)
Gnoblar trappers (1-2)
Globlar fighters (1-2).

All decked out, this costs about 1700pts, give or take, so after including the madatory 3 core units, that could form a full 2000 / 2250, with only the three core units being able to panic anything else.
What do you guys think? Could it - in principle - work?  Or would the units just get torn apart, one by one?

Cheers

I would say the latter one is more probable...Much more so if you declare to be a newbie with Ogres.

But it could be a nice idea for WC to think about, I could see him make it work.

The problem here would be that you haven't got a large wound pool. Your opponent will be doing a roughly set number of wounds to you every turn. The percentage of your army's wounds you loose is therefor greater. Also, all the firepower will be directed at the smaller number of units. I'd say there is a good chance they'd get torn to shreds in a hail of nasty pointy stuff.

Remember Panic isn't so much a problem unless you have units fleeing through each other.

Characters with Man Eaters are ItP so ignore panic. All Ogres ignore gnoblars even if they are destroyed.

Jade lion and a BSB both seem quite effective.

Thanks for all your comments!

Your opponent will be doing a roughly set number of wounds to you every turn.

Wouldn`t one expect that one one hand, all template weapons will hit less, and also those nasty flank shots from bolt throwers should be significantly reduced? (and against good opponents, they seem impossible to avoid at least once or twice a battle. For me, that is  :? )
On the other, even if one is just exposed to missile fire, and the opponent is doing a set number of wounds, it seems fair to assume that they are not equally distributed, but some units may be overkilled, and some wounds wasted.

But still I have to agree that having such a low wound pool causes serious problems

Interestingly, my panic problems mostly arise when a nearby unit breaks from combat. Fleeing trough each other always seemed more controllable to me... why it is just the other way round? Do you play your units more spaced out, so none is within the 6" radius?

Always have Bellowers on your bulls.

I tend to keep the Bulls within 12"s of the Tyrant to help reduce failed Panics. If your line is to spread out this can be a problem however.

IGs testing on Leadership 8 are less prone to failing therefore I will put some of them towards flanks over 12"s from the Tyrant.

Another reason why guts are better *Sigh* A unit of 2 MEs are over US 5 so they will cause panic if destroyed.

Keep bulls within general's range or with characters. If running units of 4 guts with naked bull bait units kineater will cover 3 units and there bait, which is most of your army.

This list doesn't have the staying power or hitting for that matter a nice idea but IMO it won't work
