In the few games I've had with ogres I've used 3 butchers - but it seems the tournements where I live wont allow 3 of a kind in the hero section so I'm throwing the towel into the ring and cutting out a butcher! Seeing as I kinda need to mage hunt a bit, to make my two remaining butchers more effecient, I'm gonna field a hunter. So, lets disregard the fact that he's overpriced and talk about how he does and what sort of tactics you can use him in..
Personally I'm most likely gonna take him with greyback belt and mawseeker - the stupidity is acceptable on a ld. 9. While you can argue that he might go stupid when you need him the most, you could also argue that the toughnesss 6 makes sure he lives long enough for that to be an issue in the first place! The cats seems to be nice for mage hunting in a R&F unit tho ofcourse they'll suicide doing that. If you protect him some I think he could prove a valuable asset to the OK army..
So, what are you guys opinions and experience on the hunter? Have you any great comboes or tactics you could share? If you vote on the poll, please post in the thread aswell

This has been done in the old forum. Anyhoo, the hunter, like the giant, is good if you play friendly games... they are a blast to have fun with... if you want to win, though, he's better off home, in your army box. cheers

I've never used one, but they seem to be popular.
Go Shikamaru! Beat her up with your sixteen hit combo!

Metheon08 Jan 2006
Yeah this was done on the old forum, but I found the old thread lacking.. It had no real tactics or uses for him, just a bunch of "seems to be fun", "friendly games only" etc.. I'd like to see TACTICS!! for the guy, not random quotes..

I usually field a Hunter with two cats (robodogs in my case ) and the Greyback pelt.
I find that he's a good replacement for Yhetees in my army, and he's a lot more versatile IMO. Granted he's slower and a bit pricier, but his cats are possibly the only things in the army that have a good chance of successfully hunting mages, and when they're loose they're faster and more manoeuvrable than the Yhetees. He's also possibly the best thing in the army to deal with large flying nasties (something Ogre Kingdoms armies have great difficulty dealing with I find) thanks to his missile attack (hopefully in the future GW will let him move and shoot just like Leadbelchers. As it currently stands, being able to pivot like a war machine is just plain odd).
Basically I treat him as a kind of a multi-tasking support unit. I wouldn't advise taking on ranked units with him solo, but he does fill roles that the rest of the army lacks and can on occasion be a game winner.
BTW I think I'd stay clear of using Mawseeker with him. I just hate any part of my army going stupid

I don't think Maw seeker would be a bad idea, though personally I like to use farstrider and a wyrd stone necklace. I ussually use him on the flank, for mage hunting, warmachine hunting...whatever the situation calls for. If nothing else, he makes a strong flank threat. In several games I have taken out catapults, wizards, and archers, easily making his points back...and most of the time it was just by letting his cats do the work. A line of archers can be taken apart by the sabertusks as they will ussually only get outnumbering as their bonus thanks to the cats good WS, STR, and INT, and the tusks should be able to kill 3 guys a round leaving only one to strike back. As for the hunters crossbow...for me it is a disappointment. It is decent in stats, range, str, and the hunters BS are all good for a unit that can move and packs a strong punch...however, my luck for whatever reason always seems to fail with this weapon.

I only uses them against dwarfs to kill warmachine crews, but if it wasn't included in the armybox set I'd possibly not have one!
T0MaHaWk08 Jan 2006
I haven't used him in any games, but it he seems a bit overpriced and the more-or-shoot with the harpoon are a pain in the ass. I would rather have another butcher^^
Genghis Khan08 Jan 2006
What I know about the hunter, he's consider as a unit with the sabertusks. Once the sabertusks are on the run, the hunter can pivet and shoot. Like many said, I would put him for fun but not in tournaments.
Their must be good reasons for him not to move and shoot. But when I do use him, I try to keep him on flanks with the longstrider big name.
Who will be the next Khan in the Ogre Kingdoms?

Almost everyone that uses a hunter tells me its the game breaker alot of the time. Enemy generals seem to focus on the "larger" groups with Ogre's not the singular units.
Rogg09 Jan 2006
I don't play in tournemnts but I always had good luck with him. Today I took out a Chaos Dwarf Wizard. On round two with a great shot. There Great for support your units and taking out wizards and Warmachines.

I intend to field a Hunter with Longstrider as my second character in this season's campaign army, to give me some experience with him. So far I've only used him in a couple of games where he didn't do much.

I'm quite fond of the Hunter. He is not a game winner (unless you are friggin luckly), but he can do some good things.
A hunter with cats and Greypack pelt pretty much fills out the same role as yhetees, but are more versatile (not to mention that the hunter model is ace compared to the icy ones).
The biggest worry about hunters is that he will get shot to pieces. I don't mind much about that. Due to T5 and 4 wounds your opponent will have to direct a lot of missile fire on him to bring him down, and that means less missile directed towards your precious bulls and guts.

I had to Google Big Red Book to figure out it meant the WFB rulebook - I thought it had something to do with Mao.

It's pretty even between gamebreaker and being a laugh - guess thats a good enough reason for me to give him a try..
Would it be possible for you guys to explain more about how you use him (if you have any fancy tactics that is) - and what gear he has for the job!
bork da basher09 Jan 2006
i always use one in 2000 pts or above. equipped with 2 tusks is all i use and i put him on the flanks with a bull rhinox rider and the two do a tandem on any units trying to sneak up on me. the tusks are excellent for speedbumping very dangerous flankers like knights then the grusome twosome counter charges and stands a chance of running them down. if i can get the hunter behind enemy lines i can pick my targets, war machines or charecters are all easy meat. i rarely bother with his harpoon launcher unless i feel i need to remove some wounds from a monster early on. alternatively i take the role of hunter on in serious way if there is monsters about. equip with tenderiser and go giant/dragon slaying. he earns back his points with one kill if he pulls it off.
i think the hunter is given a bad rep but i have always enjoyed success with him and will always use him in my OK army.
GreenDragon09 Jan 2006
I agree, my army would not be the same without him, and all my opponents fear him. Giving him Mawseeker is not always such a bad idea, T6 cam be amazing, if you don't mind the Stupidity of course
I like to focus my game plan around the hunter, either supporting him, or using the rest of the army to draw away some of the attention so that he can get round back of the opponent.
