Hordes and Warmachine

The only faction I'd avise you really avoid as a newbie is mercs, as they lack a lot of the options that make the other factions competative to begin with.

Patuljak is right that both Khador and Trolls are some of the easiest to get to grips with when you're starting out. Their high hitting power and relative durability really gets you into the agressive play mindset nescessary to win at the game(s)

Man, this is getting me all antsy to build that Magnus Agenda force I've had kicking around for a bit!

Corai's right... although some factions might give you a slight advantage at the start with being a little easier to get to grips with they really are all pretty equal (though mercs are best avoided at first)

Ok, the Privateer press site is really bugging me, it seems so hard to find pics of models on there, all I want is a nice page where most of the models from each faction (or whatever they're called) are on so I can look and see what I like best...can't find anything.
