The Gutmass tribe (16-06-2012/new ogre stuff)

original thread ↗

Wel I've been converting some models the last few months, and the last two were rather good in my opinion
I participated in a convertion tournament, theme Valentine. Me and my friend came up with the idea of making an Cupidogre. An ogre with fals wings, a gigantic cupido bow, pulled upby a scrappy construction, pulled by gnoblars. I became second in the game, I've got 20 votes, and the 1st one (a julia and romeo convershion from elves) got 21 votes :|
I've only got pics when it was unpainted, as he still stands in my local gamestore. maybe you wil see it painted later. I made and painted the ogre, the base, and the gnoblars, my friend the construction. Its overal brownish, with some hearts. it looks good to me. The ogre wears a large white boxershorts with hearts on it
My other project was a Mawseeker ogre, an ogre who came back from a pilgramage to the Maw. Well, he mutaded, and everyone says it looks like an chaos ogre(from nurgle), which I don't like as I see chaos ogres trators to the Maw.
How can i make him look like a Maw-ogre by painting it?

here are some pics:

awesome sculpt man! those tentacles are really awesome!!! i love that custom ogre!
The cupid ogre is great. Nice conversion. Will you use it as a scraplauncher in games?
And the mawseeker, while well done, is heavily mutated for a mawseeker. I don't know your fluff behind it, but the Maw itself doesn't cause mutation.

@ Reg: yes, I'll be using him as a scraplauncher, but I also wrote down some fluff and rules about him, if you guys want to, i can post him up.

About the mawseeker, it could be wrong, but my intrepetation about the coming of the maw was that there came a huge meteorite out of the sky, a large 'chaos stone' which went into the deserts near cathay were the ogres used to live. Some ogres manage to succes in their pilgramage  to the stone which they identify with the Maw,and to find their way back. The book states that a mawseeker is stupid and parts of him have mutated and rotten away. I wanted him to look like that. Maybe I did a litle to 'much' about him. I liked how it came out and wanted every time to add more and more.

The Gutmass Tribe

I like the model, and your fluff for it is fine. But officially, the Maw doesn't cause such rampant mutation (and it isn't explicitly a chunk of warp stone, though we know it is). The mutation it causes is partly due to the incredible heat and dryness of the desert surrounding it, and it causes a wasting away effect (think radiation sickness). But since it is a large chunk of warp stone, and there are so few reported cases of mawseekers, who knows what the extent of the effects are.

ooh, well, I should have miss-understood the fluff around the ogre pilgramage. I'll say he managed to succesfully make the pilgramag twice then.

Thanks

Is the great maw some "old god" like thing eating away the world then? :P
Also i really like the conversions :) And if you dont mind telling me, how exactly did you do the tentacles? :)

Your Cupidogre is wonderful, very Michaelangelo/Da Vinci somehow!  I love the Mawseeker too, tentacles are always so cool!  I'm really looking forward to seeing both of these guys with paint on.  Perhaps your Mawseeker could be sort of blackened with radiation burns, with some cool glowing green.. or maybe really pallid purpley sores.

Well, I began with a great tentacle around the sword(I used miliput, as its harder then greenstuf) then, I began at the bottom of the great tentacle, adding smaller ones, in the air or also around the sword. Just repeat this until your at the top of the arm. If this is finished, I added some destroyed skin over the tentacles at the top, like it was growing from the inside of his arm, pulling the 'real' arm away. if I'm planning on making a new mawseeker with tentacles, I should maybe make a litle tutorial around it.

I shall use my regular colour sheme (grey skin colour, dark red pants) and on his mutated skin parts some greenish glow if I manage to paint it that way. The tentacles will be painted verry dark green with a very lichtgreen highlight. I will start painting sunday, and will take pictures of the finished cupidogre tomorrow if I don't forget.

Well, I decided I'll post all my new models over here. I forgot to take pictures of the painted cupidogre, but I managed to finished my mawseeker. I'm happy with the result. Because I enyoyed making and painting him that much, I'll make a unit of 3 mawseekers. But first something else, I bought a new tyrant yesterday. He'll become a real 'ironskin' tyrant.

Pics of the finished mawseeker:

what do you think about him?

I like it. The photo quality makes it hard to determine exactly how well it is painted, but it looks nice. The tentacles seem undone though, partially because they look like unpainted greenstuff.

He looks great, although your photos aren't doing him justice!  (If only we could take photos as well as we can paint... )  I like the tentacles, I can see that you have shaded them nicely, and I'm sure that IRL they don't look like greenstuff at all.  He's very cool, and I'm looking forward to seeing more of your work!

I know the pics aren't that clear. I took them with my cellphone, but the camera photo's are even worse. In real the tentacles look better. They look a bit dry, but I'm going to wash it with some green ink. if I coeld get my hands on a better camera...

at the moment, I'm working on a stegadon scraplauncher:D I've cut an ogre in three pieces, and made him fit on the stegadon, gave him a cannon, filles some gaps in the stegadon.(I had to sculpt some skin) and started painting. i only have to paint the ogre, and a final highlight on the skin of the stegadon :)
the stegadon is realy fun to paint. heres my WIP:

wery nice! i like the idea of the leadblecher.. it would be cooler if the cannon would be modified! :D maby 2 barrels to make it shoot twice :D i like this model and its nicely painted too!

I've taken pics of my finished stegoscraplauncher. I've painted the ogre and his cannon, and added some skink traitors. They kept moving with the stegadon once he was captured by the ogre. They think the ogre wants to protect the stegadon, and they want to help him. The ogre just wants an easy way to travel through the mountains with his heavy cannon.

I'm sorry for the bad quality... :(
my next project will be another mawseeker.

After all, painting 100 night goblins is something you do in the morning just before you are off to work.

And I think you missed a 0 when you wrote 11 armies. The correct nr should be 110 armies I would think, based on your painting speed.
Well, my second mawseeker is finished. I'm still not convinced of the head coming out of his shoulder. A third mawseeker is planned. I'll convert a unit of five of them, including banner.

I like this one better than the first!  Everything really looks like it is bursting through the skin which is great, and the extra head actually looks like a growth rather than just stuck on.  Can't wait to see the whole unit.

Some nice imaginiative ideas going on here, although the pictures make your painting hard to see on some of them mate. I struggle getting good photos of my stuff sometimes too. I would highlight that tongue up a bit more and then put some gloss varnish on it to increase the gross factor, manybe the same on the tentacles to.

That's a pretty darn cool mawseeker. The only thing I don't like about it is the shoulder head's beard, which is pointing straight out when it should hang down.

well, i began with my 3th mawseeker. His head wil be halved, with some tentacles coming out of it. Two of them are already made. His belly is modeled and he has two arms on the right. i'm lacking ideas at the moment for his left arm though.

It think you should just remove the beard on the 2nd mawseeker.

"You can just hang around outside in the sun all day, tossing a ball around, or you can sit at your computer and do something that matters!" - Eric Cartman

It has been a while ago when I posted an update. I've been working on several things since my last one. The idea was to make 2 new leadbelchers. One who's kneeling, ready to fire, and a leadbelchers who's misfirering.

This is my first one, still wip, not fully painted. I didn't start the second one though.

Before i could finish and start my second leadbelcher, some nicer project interupted my work. I started some markers. The idea was to use some primitive ogre symbols from the army book. Two were for my bickering gnoblars, an four others for my scraplaunchers, Gut magic, 6 wount on gutmaw tyrant, etc. Still have to find two other symbols though. I was thinking of the symbol for challenge/fight: the fist.

and tjis is where I'm working on at the moment: a rhinoxrider. Its made from the scraplauncher rhinox. I twisted his head, sculpted some fur and made the  base. I seem to have lost the horns :( The ogre should be heavely armored, fitting my ironskin theme. He has to look like he has his 2+ armor safe.

I home you liked it!

Wow, you are really doing some cool stuff here Ghark! Awesome mawseekers, they are really scary. U could use a few classes in photography though  ;) U seem to take a lot of your pictures against the light, and u should really take the pictures the opposite way.. "with the light". Especially since your camera is not that great, because its clear that those photos does not do your sculpting justice!

Hi all!
I went through this afternoon with my rhinox rider. firstly, I gave him some new horns, the horns from the Bull banner. i made the mount, armoured him. He's almost finished. Only a few details left and I have to attach the banner on him. The first pictures were better, against the light, but later this day, there wasn't enough light. The pictures aren't good at all again.  :( I'm sorry.

I've managed to buy a realy cheap army on the internet. Its about 2500 points. I'll have some work this summer :)
There were almost(somme missing parts) 3 scraplaunchers, but I'll use the rhinoxen to make some more rhinoxriders, as i already have 3 scraplaunchers. I'll make a 4th one with a bull instead of a rhinox and maybe a 5th on top of another stegadon. Currently, I'm working on 3 yheetees and whent they will be finished, I'll start painting my rhinox rider. I still have exams, so pics should be up in a week.

It was. I paid 180 euros for 11 ironguts, 5 bulls, 3 yheetees, 2 gorgers, 3 uncompleted scraplaunchers(RR's), 4leadbelchers, 2 buchers, 1 tyrant and 2 sabretusks.
i finished the yheetees yesterday and started painting the rhinox fur. I also found the macro finction on my camera and tried to take some better pics. I'm pleased how the yheetees turned out. Hey Ghark, just checked these photos to see how things were progressing and i must say those yhetees look great! I like the matching fur on the rhinox as well, good work. Earlier you mentioned what i meant by "gross" - thats as in disgusting and 'orrible!! I think some gloss varnish on the mutants tentacles and such would make it look slimy and horrible. Also good to see some reasonable photos!!! Don't use the zoom though as some of those photos are still grainy and horrible and not doing justice to the good work you re doing here.

I agree, a little to much red... try a basecoat of scorched on the armor, on top of that put some blood red, and on top of that put some boltgun metal, that's what I do for a rusted effect.

The bases from the knights, marauder horsemen and mages are bought from microarts studios IIRC.

The bases of the dragon warshrines, helcannon, unit filler,... are made of Isolation Foam(isolatieplaten in dutch, I don't know the correct translation ) they are attached to the bases with PVA gleu and hardened with Compactuna.(Several layers).

The "swamp part" is made out of a layer of PVA gleu or compactuna. When its fully dried, I aply several dots to create the bubbles. Paint it, and when finished some water effects from gw.

Not really, there's no GW-shop close to me (I live in Belgium) and if I would be nominated in the GW(small chance), I would have to make a trip to the UK, which is expensive...

I've been working on my first test-model for my new army, Beastmen. The plan is to build a rastafarian beastmen army. key kolors will be red, green and yellow and I'll try to scuilpt dreadlocks on most of the models

This is a gor wit sculpted dreads. I like how he turned out. The only thing I'm doubting about is the base. I don't know which color to use. Any tips, comments?

I also worked some more on my WIP ghorgon. Still have a lot to ad...

Let me know what you think!

I almost finished the Ghorgon. Finaly :P . The legs were completely redone, horns, bone-blades and fur were added. I also sculpted some scales to make the skin areas less flat, to give them some texture. I also made the hoof bigger, as it was way to small for this beast.

Overall, I'm quite statisfied with him. The last thing left to do is blend the bone-blades into his arms and maybe ad some bits to his belt, but I'm not sure about that.

The pics are crappier than usual, as its verry dark in Belgium today.

note: in real he looks better than on the pics, I guess i took pics out of  some wrong angles

let me know what you think about him  :)

WOW!  Can't wait to see it all painted up.
It has been a long time since I updated this blog, as there's almost no response... However, I'll try again. I've painted some more beastmen, the gorghon is finished, as are the gors. i completed 4 chariots too. i'll see if I'll post pics of the later. What i've got finished this week :

It's miliputt. The rough parts are done with the standard version( yellow), and on top the detail version (white)

It's (a lot!) cheaper than actual greenstuff, but it doesn't hold details very well.

No, it's goinig to be a razorgor chariot ;) If you pay attention, you can see its a chariot base ontop of the normal base (which works as some kind of giant movement tray. I can always take the spider of the giant base during games, but he'll be flying a little then :P

The color scheme for the spider reminds me of Lavos from chrono trigger. Looks amazing, especially the base.
Things happen, people die... usually when I'm around.

Thanks  :D  I've managed to get some more paint on this big guy. I've painted the head, eyes and some flesh.

I realy like how the eyes turned out. They look better in real than on these photos, don't know why.

Really nice. Your painting is excellent and consitent and the freehand looks great. I'd be tempted to try and add some sort of dirpping ichor or ooze on the fangs as they look perfect for it ;)

I just google image results for dripping fang spider and a big trapdoor spider images popped up..yikes those fangs are big.

wow. that spider. genuinely incredible. so, so, so good.
The first pics are taken!

This are my first 5 chaos hounds and 2 single razorgors. I used the metal ones, as i like them way more then the plastic ones.

I had to find a solution for my razorgors, as I realy dislike the GW sculpt. About a year ago, I converrted some dragon ogres for my WoC army, bur never painted them. They got promoted to razorgor ;)

The hounds:

The razorgors:

Pics of the caracters and units will follow, once the movement trays have fully dried.

I'm also working on a test mini for the new ogre army I'm planning to make. I'm doubting to do a humanish skin color (not because of GW, but i'm a bit tired of painting my ogres grey). I hope priming him tonight when the green is dry, and start painting him tomorow!

The Gutmass Tribe
Ogre and chaos BB Team
They look good. But the stomach on either side of the gutplate is weird and unusually bulgy (which shouldn't be a problem on the battlefield).
Points for getting dragon ogres into your BoC army.

The return to my ogre tribe has somehow changed. I've never stopped playing ogres, I've just pauzed painting them so I could work on my beastmen army. My skills have improved a lot during this time, and I'm not so sure if i want to continue working on The Gutmass Tribe.

I had the idea recently to start a second ogre army from scratch. I wanted bleu to be a keycolor as I realy like painting it. Another thing I enjoy painting is human skin-color. Therefore my ogres will be skinncolored. Not because GW changed theirs, like many will accuse me for probably...

Well, here's the test model:

I realy could use some feedback, because I'm not sure if i want/can do an entire army of those. I like the bleu an skin, but I'm not sure about the metal...

I should add some blood once I've found myself a realistic recipe.

Thanks!

The Gutmass Tribe
Ogre and chaos BB Team
Looking good. If you're not happy with the metal, try adding some rust. It would go great with the blue.

I tried it, but I failed at making it look good and realistic. I started with  a brown basecoat and went to orange. Don't know what I did wrong though...

Here are some pics of the GBS and BSB. Yhe shaman stayed the same, just a new shiney base(and yes, they are magnetised).

I used the pestigor champion as model for my BSB. Mostly because I realy like the model, but also because of its mutated skin. I think it represents gnarled hide pretty well. It was also easy to attach a shield to the banner arm.

I'm also heading to a tournament tomorrow, using my beast for the first time.

It's 2000 points, and I took:

GBS (beast) with 4+ Ward
BSB, beast banner, gnarled hide, shield, LA
Shaman(shadow) scrol

40 gor FC
2 chariots
5 dogs

1 razorgor chariot
2 razorgors (solo)
23 bestigors champion and banner + banner of dicipline

Ghorgon

I have no idea how I'll do in a tournament, I'll maybe write a little report for each battle later if there were some interesting battles.

I've been painting and converting my ogres the last few months.

Hi, it has been a while since I updated the blog. I've been working on my ogre tribe. The photo's are not that good, as they were taken with my cell phone. Not every detail is vilible, like the source lightning, and stuff.

The idea was to create a tribe which is known for it's large number of firebellies, even regular ogres are inspired by fire.

I liked my giant to hold the cannon, like in the fluff about the skytitans. I had to resculpt the shoulders and upper arms to make the cannon fit.

The mournfangs, champion and banner:

Some bulls and ironguts. I had the idea to use maneaters as crew. More will folow.
i tried to make each individual as unique as possible.

What do you think? I'm sorry for the crappy pics.

Probably the same method I've been using on my beastmen. I'll do  them all at once when my unit of 12 bulls will be completed.

I was thinking about modeling a giant to hold the cannon but seeing you do makes me want to try it even more. Even the bulls and ironguts look awesome. Cant wait to see what else is in store.
