Hey, I'm Fantasyfreak and I have a problem........
Ok guys, this is the start of another, no doubt infrequently updated Gnoblog that will possibly last, like my other two, until the end of time
Ok the problem is that I'm starting another army without finishing my others, hey-ho, I can't resist a new army and this one is on the cheap
The list is there, the basing is sorted in theory, the timeframe is planned...all I need is some simple green and to actually get paint on models
The aim is a 1500 point force for AGoMIII , which leaves me a few months to get sorted.
I'll get the list up later, but it includes a Dragon Mage and some of the hard-to-get Maiden Guard.
I'm pretty stuck with a colour scheme though, should I go with the Blue & white, or some other colour that complements white nicely? (I think white suits the HE's)
Ideas anyone?

As a dark elves player, I have some ideas, but they're not suitable for this site to express
White and a darker colour always look good, but the problem with white is that it is a hell to paint. isn't a colour like space wolves grey (blueish off white) not a better solution for better looking paint? And then with shadow grey as darker colour. It makes it a bit grimmish for high elves, but I think it might look nice and coherent. You could still use white, but then as high light.

You could try some nice contrast colours. White and red comes to mind, as does purple. Green would work, but then you get that pickley colour for a sour army :p Just kidding ofcourse, though I do know HE player who has a knack for making sour lists and has green HE. I call them the pickle brigade.

oh man, I just suggested another blue and gold colour scheme didn't I? It's like an illness with me...

don't worry about the "starting new project without finishing one off" problem FF, It seems to work itself out (I've got 4 on the go at the moment as you know).
Corai: blue and gold.....we need to have some sort of intervention
on teh colour scheme I agree that white suits the HE, but would suggest a purple as the second colour - very regal and a great contrast.

Thanks for the suggestions guys
I think I'll hold off on the blue and gold and leave it to the master.
Pickley doesn't sound good, I think I'll leave that alone.
There are a couple of mentions of purple... this is my favourite colour, (not that you'd guess from any of my models)I like the sound of it but am not a 100% that it'd go with the kind of white I'm thinking of painting. I do fancy a proper white though, I've done HE's before and was pleased with their brightness.
Something I'll have to mess around with and get some opinions on from you lot.

Here's the list that I'll be rocking up;
Dragon Mage, Silver Wand, Guardian Pheonix
BSB, GW, HA
19 Spearelves, F.C
15 White Lions, Mus, Stnd
10 Archers
White Lion Chariot
6 Reavers
Eagles Claw Repater BT
Great Eagle
Comes in at just under 1500.
Anyone got any thoughts or crit?

I think it might struggle for punch. HE lists at low point levels tend to be flimsy if you include largish units of specials, due to the high model cost. Also, with the stubborn and rerolls from BSB, the musician in the white lions is almost wasted points.
I prefer to run my White Lions in 12/14 anyway. The extra 1/2 attacks at S6 can be all the difference, especially if you can lure knights into the unit.
Personal preference here, but I would prefer 6 Shadow warriors and some change over the 6 reavers. I can't justify 17 point special slot fast cav with no other benefit. They are too flimsy to fight, and the shadow warriors tend to be better at avoiding combat, plus they can contest scout spots against skink armies, have -1 to be hit, and have long bows for free.
If I can, I'll dig up a link to a purple HE army from Asur.org. If done properly, they can look really good, and still be clearly HE, rather than tending towards DE territory.
Edit: Some more thoughts. I actually missed the DM on first read through, and I was wondering where your points lay. I really don't like him as a general. His role is as a disposable distraction that offers a large potential threat to attract attention. Being your general, this is not the ideal role for him.

Thanks for the comments everyone, and thanks for all the info and pics there Assimilation, it's all really helpful
The DM, I really want to include this dude, I know he's not exactly one of the best choices and is very flimsy but I really dig the model and fluff, the playstyle looks pretty cool too, if hard to master. As a General choice though he really isn't the best, but there's not much choice as the BSB might be worth his weight in shiney stuff.
Reavers, I was going to include the Shadow Warriors from the start but opted for Reavers in the end, not sure what the reasoning was behind it apart from just wanting to give them some of the new Chariot horses I think I'll have a look at re-working the list a bit and see what I can come up with
The purple, I'm thinking of going this way now, I'll have to do a little practising though as I find purple a really hard colour to get right as there are so many shades and it's a pain to highlight. We'll see
I've had a mess about on the bases, seeing what I can come up with, they'll be harder than I thought but hopefully worth it.

I am in the process of building a HE army too,and for my scheme i tired something different:
Not everybodys cup of tea,but they are really quick and easy to paint.
I do like the sound of Corai's idea, the elves from LoTR look brilliant in my opinion.
Good luck!

That some pretty nice looking stuff IGM, keep it going
I recieved all the models I need today,(bar the Reavers or SW's) some stripping required, although it seems a shame as they are quite nicely painted Painting myself is what it's all about though so it has to be done
I'm still not sure on that colour scheme, a nice light blue and gold might look good with a bit of white, or a royal purple and white.... decisions..decisions
Whatever I do I'm gonna need some new paints, as this will be a change from my usual dark muted colour schemes

Ok, I've been real busy today on this army and have a blister to prove it
Some models are in stripper, a lot of bases have been made and some moudlines have been removed.
It's strange nowadays having an army that is mostly metal (even stranger that it's the larger models that are plastic ), but nice at the same time.
I've decided to plunge for the purple, not sure on the shade, but definetly purple as it will (hopefully) go with the bases.
Pics are unfortunately a while away yet as I think it'll be some time before I get paint to mdels.
I'll keep you all posted

also, good to see you go for the purple - I think it'll work great with gold and white. I know what you mean about metal armies - my wood elves are 70% metal models!! My daemons are all metal (except for the spawns I use) and even my ogres have 10 (of 19) big chunky metal models too!

I'm back focused on this army now after I finished my Slavegiant. Would we all like WIP of models so far, I.E no paint (nothing spectacular), or can we wait for paint?
We regards to the list, I'm still not entirely settled on it
Which one do you guys think is the better one? (1.5k)
Dragon mage, Silver wand, Guardian Pheonix, Lv2
BSB, GW, H.armour
19 Spearelves, F.C
10 Archers
15 White Lions, stnd, mus
White Lion Chariot
7 Shadow Warriors
Repeater Bolt thrower
Great Eagle
OR
Dragon Mage, Silver Wand, Guardian Pheonix, LV2
Mage, Lv2, Seerstaff, Dispell scroll
20 Spearelves, F.C
15 White Lions, Stnd, mus
White Lion chariot
7 Shadow Warriors
Repeater Bolt thrower
Repeater Bolt thrower
The first one I think seems better all round, the second goes for magic superiority at the expense of the reliability of the WL's.

I'd go for the second list, although I'd miss the eagle. The second bolt thrower more than makes up for the archers you dropped and the 2 blocks, supported by the chariot and dragon can be used in several combinations to great effect.
Is there any way in that list to squeeze an eagle back in - maybe at the cost of a couple of shdow warriors and some spearmen (as 14 + mage would be enough)???

Nope, it's a rare slot, so that would mean getting rid of a RBT , it's a gripe I was having too
I like the first list myself but feel that more magic is needed a la list 2, not just more magic, but the ability to choose the spells from the lore that I want, depending on what I face

Wow, so I took this army out on the field last night for the first time (the second list). Seeing it altogether it was shocking how small it was.
I was very consious of no throwaway units and set up was the quickest ever. I played against a DE list that was pretty unconventional and got trashed.
I was dubious of the Dragon Mage before about how flimsy he is, but liked his fluff and the idea, a couple more games with him I think but `I can see him getting the boot. Other things to note are that SW's suck a bit and my unit of Spears seemed quite big, I also think that the WL's could be gotten away with a little smaller or just 7x2. I think MSU could be a nice way to play, I'll see.

Shadow warriors don't suck. They're just worse then shades. Normally it doesn't matter if you have a -1 to hit for multiple shots, but in this case the shades have a high enough BS to shoot better then the shadow warriors.
In all the games I've seen, high elves could only win in a very MSU way.

Being as I was facing a list with LOTS of Shades, I think that had a lot to do with my reasoning. Also the 7 SW's Charging 5 Harpies, not killing one and all but one dying helped my semi-conclusion too
MSU does look like it would work, or conversely, a Deathstar-esque PG or DP unit.

Phoneix Guard Deathstar would be brutal Really, it would. I have seen a pseudo-deathstar DP unit. It was 18 strong, with a frontage of 6. It really did a lot of damage to the opponent's Empire army

A WE list seems a lot easier at 1.5k and I'm thinking of using them for AGoM (1.5k tourney) instead

when do we get to see pictures?
i would go with pink, looks good on HE. painted some silver helmets pink at some time ago, they looked good
Fantasyfreak28 Apr 2009
Pictures are quite a while away yey as I've put this army on the back burner for the time being...the WE's are getting all of the attention at the min
Pink would possibly look good, but in my neck of the woods I'd never live it down, HE's are already refered to as pansies, I don't want to further that stereotype

Ok, here we are with an update. I've finally sat down and worked out a list that I think doesn't suck Donkey balls, which believe it or not, is quite hard to do with HE's.
My Wood Elves will be gracing the tourney scenes this year, these HE's will possibly be going along to next years set, depending on how I feel and where I am with the army.
I'll be taking this list up to 2k at first, more than likely expand from there though.
The main list I'll be using is geared up for using in a friendly atmosphere, being hard but not cheese and pretty balanced with a bit of everything, hopefully it'll still work ok though When I want to cheese it up for a tourney or the odd game, I just take out the two mages, Korhil and the WLC and add in MR Prince on Star Dragon, fully kitted out. It should work pretty well competatively.
6 Dragon Princes, with mus, stnd and Ellyrion banner
6 Dragon Princes with mus, stnd and warbanner
Lion Chariot
Repeater Bolt thrower
Repeater Bolt thrower
I get between 8-10 power dice, the BSB will obviously go in a DP unit, more than likely the warbanner one.
What do you think, workable? Rubbish?
Let me know!

I've had try and stop him on a chariot before and he's damn dangerous that way - plue he's someone who can handle himself on foot if his chariot ever gets shot out from under him.

I've not considered it in depth TBH, I can just see the chariot getting shot up and him roaming on foot, he could be really good in the chariot and I really like the idea, just a little uncertain how he'd perform He's also there to give the White Lions a bit of punch and an extra pip to the stubborn, I be quite nervous about them without him.
Might give it a try though just for the craic at some point, nothing ventured...
What do you think about the rest of the list?

you've basically got a gunline with the dragon princes as very nice hammers and the white lions as a very respectable anvil. I'd love you try and find 50 points for an eagle somewhere though for redirection and march blocking to allow the bolt throwers more time to take shots and the dragon princes to position themselves.
Personally i'd look at dropping the LSG to archers and using the points to buy another white lion (or 2, can't remember the point costs off the top of my head). I might also be tempted into dropping the chariot for a second white lion unit on foot - these guys are really that good with their ASF S6 attacks and their excellent armour vs. shooting.
this way everyone would be forced to walk towards your lines, the white lions would hold them while the dragon princes crushed them.

Yeh I've tried to fit the Eagle in, but have failed so far, found it hard reigning the list down to 2K. Really wanted an Eagle too.
Dropping the WLC Chariot would give me 9 White Lions which is something to look at defintely, the other one's I'm running 7x2 (Korhil making up a complete rank) as I think the extra 2 attacks are nice and better than extra ranks with the S6 and points cost.
I'll try it out at the club in a couple of weeks

Played the first game with this list last night and got a big win, it worked how I thought it would but I vdidn't use things to full effect IMO. One thing that is definetly getting changed is to add a champion into the Dragon princes who have the WB, his role will be to accept challenges so the BSB doesn't have to, it's really needed to protect him.
Next game will be next week, the week after I'll be playing Wildcard for a true test of what I can do with the list

And I think you missed a 0 when you wrote 11 armies. The correct nr should be 110 armies I would think, based on your painting speed.

It's been a while!
I finished my Woodies off before concerntrating on another army, but now they are all but finished I find my attention turning to something new. After a lot of deliberation I've decided I want to do my High Elves now, I've always had a soft spot for them, they were the army that got me back into the game.
I'm gonna do something with this army that I've never done before, make it fairly competative. This is something I don't really ever as I like the sub-par units in armies and like armies to look like actual armies. After making the army a nice 2k competative list, I'm going to flesh it out a bit for club gaming adding in Mages too as I've always liked HE magic and how flexible the Mages are.
So, here is the list that I'm going to be painting up, somestuff will likely get refined in the process when I've had a few games, but will most likely just be magic items.
The army will be done using older metal models (as I like them) plus an older Dragon (the new one is just seen everywhere and I want something different)
Prince Star Dragon Armour of Caledor Star lance Guardian Pheonix Talisman of Loec
6 Dragon Princes Standard War Banner Champion w/magic attacks for unit
6 Dragon Princes Standard Ellyrion Banner
Repeater Bolt Thrower
Repeater Bolt Thrower
Great Eagle

I agree with you wholeheartedly RD, the obvious choice would be to min core with Archers, but I have to give it a little of my own flavour because I've always really liked the idea of Sea Guard, plus I already have the models I think will look pretty good.
I think I could make them work too, in a strange way. They could be deployed as Archers in some games where it would be benificial to have low S missile attacks, they'd hold their own against all the usual missile unit hunters with the ASF and +2 to combat res. In other games where the missile support is a waste I'll use them more aggressively as support units and flankers etc.
There's a plan for using their flexibilty to my advantage (whether it'll work or not is a different story)

In a word. Yuk.
Rant on: As you say, you have gone away from the appearance of an army, in order to make a "competative" army. Everything about this army annoys me. BUT, that is just my personal preferance coming through.
The army consists of hammer, hammer, massive flying hammer, mobile BSB hammer and fire support.
Tactics are move forward, shoot, charge. There is no holding units for flank charges, as there are no support units to provide the charge. It will basically rely on the Star Dragon smashing opportunitistic targets, the BSB's unit smashing whatever it charges that isn't unbreakable or stubborn, and some shooting to keep flyers and large beasties at bay.
Rant off.
Are standard tournaments/games 2K for you? Locally we play 2250pts as the standard, so it is interesting to think about 250pts less of an army. Makes me feel deprived.
With such a small army, it will be vital that you make the right decisions regarding which combat to engage in, as well as keeping your bolt throwers alive for fire support. I would recommend keeping the seaguard as counter charging reserves that protect the bolt throwers. If you try and slog it up the field, they will be isolated without support, and will not stand up to anything.
I would very much like to see another eagle in that list, as you will need to be isolating the opponent through baiting and march blocking, with so few units that are actually capable of fighting.
I wish you the best of luck, but I believe that you will very quickly lose interest in playing this style of list.

I know where you're coming from Assim, but it's the whole point, I NEVER make nasty lists like this, I'm doing it for a change and so that I can compete a bit in some of the filthfest non-comp tournies that are here in the UK. I always make lists that are not min-maxed, just made to give me fun, because they look cool or because I just like the fluff of the units. I want something that I can mix it up with.
Like I said though, after I have painted this list up, I will expand it a bit, taking out the Dragon, putting in a mage and some other nicer units for friendlier tournies and games.
2K has been the standard around these parts for many a year and still is, although there are a few tournies that mix it up a bit nowadays.

Just for comparison, my current 2250pt list is
Noble on Eagle, Reaver bow, Eshield, Lance and DA Noble BSB, GW, AoC and Guardian Phoenix Mage lvl 2, Annulian Crystal
2x 20 Spears, full command 10 Archers 2x Lion Chariots 14 White Lions, Full command, Lion Standard 14 White Lions, Full command, Standard of balance 5 Silverhelms
2 Bolt Throwers Eagle
To play 2000 points, I would either drop the archers and 1 chariot, or 1 unit of spears and the standard of balance.
Edit: Also, while I think yours is a tough army, I believe that it will struggle against any horde-ish army, as you simply won't be able to do enough wounds to break enough units.

IME, which I know is very limited compared to yours, HE struggle against horde armies most of the time anyway? I think I'd really struggle with my list against some VC armies.
Your list is good and would usually be the type of thing that I'd be fielding, (my friendlier list will be similar TBH) but for the kind of games/tournies I'd want to use it in (no-comp) it'd just get shredded. That's why I just want to be able to field something that little bit harder for those situations.
