Hopefully I can use this log to stay inspired while building my "Hussian" Ogre force. (*name not finalized yet)
"Hussian" ogres are devout followers of Sigmar, notably Luther Huss due the respect these honor driven ogres hold for his combat prowess. (*More backstory to come as I work it out)
I will be partnering with a good friend for the Adepticion 2009 WFB Team Tourney. We each have to build a 1000 pts. force and one of us can use a lord choice. Based on our concept, my partner (an Empire force) will receive the Lord which he will use to bring an Archlector on a War Alter. The rest of his force will be a very devout sigmarite force with Mordheim Sisters of Sigmar models for State Troops and lots of Flagellants. His army has been a slow WIP for many months now and we decided to use it for our TT project his year. After a long discussion trying to figure out what the best combo would be with his army, I settled on ogres.
I normally build my armies in "secret" as the competition in my area is filled with good friends and very stiff. (*I compete against both MikeButcher & Gorcus from these forums quite a bit and enjoy their skills as it inspires me to new heights in the hobby). After a discussion with the Fantasy Events organizer though we have agreed to create a series of "Road to Adepticon" articles to detail our progress in building our Team Tourney army. I will post a link once it is available online. This blog will mostly detail my half of our project.
Ogres will give me a lot of room for painting and allow me to work on my conversion skills. (*I'm not the greatest at massive conversions yet, but I am very willing to try and mess up and start over)
Below is the list I have decided upon with much help from Randroid and Morien over in the Army Building forums.
Bruiser - *Purchased / Assembly Done HA / GW / Luck Gnoblar Wyrdstone Necklace Fistful of Laurels

1st Batch of Ironguts Assembled and ready for sculpting / adding more details.
I am modifying all of the weapons of these ironguts. The left as you look model will end up with a flail / morning start weapon.
The middle chap has had his arms and weapon reconstructed from various components - I'm not 100% sold on the pose of the hammer yet and may redo it.
The right chap has had a minor weapon modification which needs a putty bracket and some additional details yet. Very early stages, more to come soon.
Bases will be left blank as I am painting cobblestone directly onto the base.

Good to see you are still giving this a go! I think Ogres can really excel in team based games, especially if you exploit their strengths while your teammate helps cover some of your weaknesses.

I like the idea.
I see that one of the ogres has an open book, I guessing a book of Sigmar. The conversions could make this a really unique army. Do you have any ideas for conversions?

Thanks all for the nice comments so far.
I see that one of the ogres has an open book, I guessing a book of Sigmar. The conversions could make this a really unique army. Do you have any ideas for conversions?
The book will be a book of sigmar - These ogres follow the faith and implement the word of sigmar in any fashion the Sisters desire.
I do have alot of conversions planned. The Bulls and Gnoblars will be more heavily converted and carry the theme much more strongly than the ironguts. Although I will be going back and adding some "repentant chains" (think "cilice" from the DaVinci Code) to the ironguts as well as numerous small details.
I plan to do a bull or two in robes to mimic flagellants. I will be drawing heavy inspiration for these from the current Flagellants miniatures box and from various graphics depicting these madmen of sigmar. My goal will be to make the bruiser appear as if he is copying Luthor Huss. THAT will be a challenge.

Last update for the weekend - Managed to knock out 3 more ironguts. I knew the instant I opened my battallion and saw the Leadbelcher Great Cannon that it had to make its way into my army but as a Great Weapon.
And being a huge fan of one of Gorcus's conversion I took my own stab at it with a twist. (*Middle Ogre)
Next I will work on the greenstuffing on all 6 ogres.

I haven't been happy with the look of that weapon either. It was one of those first things I did and after a "re-look" I just felt it needed more. I may give your suggestion a whirl but I don't want him to appear as if he is "leaning" on the weapon as that involves alot of body changes I think... Thanks for confirming what I had already been thinking (and may have not wanted to admit).

Also got my Gnoblar Fighter unit completed.
The Valten fig is a "statue" which a couple of gnoblars have climbed up on. They aren't glued on yet so I can paint all the pieces separately. I was worried at first how it would look not being centered, but I think it came out ok in the end. I can always run em 4 wide if I ever REALLY want it centered.
The sheer amount of time I've spent creating these insignifant (in game terms anyway) models is insane. Each gnoblar fighter has at least 1, if not 2 Empire Flagellant weapons added. Each weapon had to be pinned on and in some cases a 2 handed weapon had to be cut down and turned into a pinned 1 handed weapon AND THEN pinned on. All that work paid off I think in the end and I'm glad I put the time in. Every gnoblar but 1 (who is in the way back & will likely get something at a later date) has some kind of conversion.
This unit is currently my favorite ranked infantry unit I've ever created.

Outside of a Luck Gnoblar and any markers / game aids my gnoblars are done!!
First an update to one I've shown. I always planned for his sign to say Cave Gnoblar ("Beware the Gnoblar") but I was getting ready to remove the chain from his left fist (he comes attached to skrag) and thought how much more fun it would be if he was chained to the sign.
The four new trappers. (Cager, Bear Trap Tripped, Flagello-Climber and Fisherman)
And a Group shot - I didn't want to use the metal models cus I'm just cheap and new I could get good results from the plastics. Instead of going out of my way to make my gnoblars busy "trapping" (I do have 1 guy "trapping a rat" and a "Fisherman") I tried to make more of them being "trapped". It just seemed more fun.

I also did some work on my bangstick butcher. The hands are just "tacked" on at the moment as I have to sculpt an apron for this chap before I glue em on.

I really liked it and it is a must for weapons (like the butchers cleaver-sword).
It might be hard to do a large amount of precision work as it requires a bit of work to cut through. I just cut it into a general shape and then "carved" it into something more specific.
Good luck! Dom

I wasn't initially. I am really liking the way these are turning out. It is quickly becoming a possibility to expand out to a 2250 force. I was going to work on DE after these but now I'm not so sure. It would be a nice change to use an "underdog" for me instead of a powerhouse.

Time for a big update - just a very few minor details to work out now before I start painting...
Finished my Bruiser - Not alot of conversion work here. Added the horns and the back banner. I still have to add rivets to the "bands" holding the banner to his back and GS where the pole meets his booty.
The finished Butcher (I may add a bit or two to the bangstick yet - but mostly finished) In Hindsight I would do the chains on his back (notably the ones on the right side as you look at it) a bit differently. I may still go back and re-work but for now I need to push forward.
The final Irongut whose weapon I was still working out how to do right...
The finished Ogre Bulls with Hammers
And the mostly finished army
I need to finish the armor plates on the Irongut with the big hammer where I hacked the arm away. So far I have replaced a foundation of the arm with Greenstuff and will cover it all with plates rather than try to get the arm up to speed. I also have to "encase" the back of his Ironfist flipping the bird.

My pleasure
What points size is the army now currently at?
JJ
Still only 1000 pts. assembled. I have to get this first 1000 pts. painted by April 1. After that is done, I will consider expanding the army. (The siren song of DE beckons...)

You know what would be cool? Instead of warpaint and tattoos, these Sigmarite ogres could have brands of certain important symbols (e.g. the 'S', or the twin-tailed comet). It'd give them something viewers are used to seeing on ogres (flesh markings), while keeping it decidedly Sigmarite.

Very cool idea - Thanks! I was thinking of doing twin-tailed tats.. but a brand seems much more in theme.

Thanks fellas - I hope to start batch painting tomorrow night.
Took the test to my buddies for a comparison. I'm gonna add another highlight layer to the skin to lighten it up a touch, I need to paint my cobblestones a bit bigger, modify the "rubble" slightly, and add another highlight to my reds.
Once I get the ogres done it's on to the Gnobbies!

Got some WIPS of my Bulls...
Skin got a little lighter and the pants got a little brighter and there are more stripes on the bull pants, the Irongut pants will get bigger stripes
Pants almost done... need the final layer on the yellow portion to make it more of a cream and touch up some 'bobbles'...

Well, they're all great. You know, if you keep painting at this high a standard there really won't be anything to critique.

Awwww shuxxx... Thx mate.
Kallus - thx to you as well.
Skintone is RMS = Reaper Master Series VMC = Vallejo Model Color
RMS Dark Elf Skin + RMS Blackened Brown Base (*DE Skin is a purply grey and was used in the test model as well, but I went 1 layer further on these guys)
Add RMS DE Highlight to that for 2nd & 3rd layers
Add RMS Rainy Grey for 4th Layer
Add RMS Rainy Grey for 5th Layer
It's important to note my base coat is a darker color than I use for subsequent layers. I don't keep any of these pre-mixed so I mix as I go. Layers 3,4, & 5 all had much less of the Base Coat included to start.
I just used multiple plastic cheap-o pallets so I have plenty of places to match colors.

0 Updates for March mostly because I have been sooo busy trying to get painted.
The tourney is this weekend and I have all of the models painted (Except the bases). So now I start the task of painting all the bases and have until Sunday to get it done.
I will post full pics after the weekend but here is a shot of the finished bruiser until then...
I'm really happy with everything except his horns and eyes which I rushed a bit. I will go back and redo them after the tourney.

Got some pics of the Ogres I used in the Adepticon Team Tourney this year to share.
We were very pleased when we were told that we swept all 3 Players Choice Categories (Theme, Display and Appearance) by a huge landslide. Something like 72 out of 86 teams voted for us in 1 category. Completely humbling. Thank you to all that voted - my teammate and I create our armies out of the enjoyment of the process. It was a bumpy road for us this year but we managed to get it done (I was painting bases on Saturday @ Adepticon - EEEKS),
There is still quite a bit more work to do to finish these guys up - but they're destined for the shelf for a while. I can always pull em out and do more to em later (Especially the gnoblars - they need some love) but I wanted to get some decent pics to share.

Gnoblars
Some of the fun text from the unit of Gnoblars.
Objective Marker - You need a model on a 40mm Base for an Objective for the Team Tourney. Ours needed to combine elements from each time. This does double duty as a unit filler when not needed as an objective.

Wow! I gotta say, this whole army is fantastic. Yours and the Empire seem to blend in well (any chance of close-ups of the other army?), and your army shot looks great. It's clear that the theme is carried across the whole army and integrated well enough not to feel forced. I like the Shadow Grey skintone and the pants are exceptional. If there are any real criticisms I could give, it would be to spice up the 2nd unit of apparently unconverted Bulls, since I really liked the Warhammer-clubs of the others. On some of the NMM I think a last lighter highlight would make it pop and appear more metallic, but it looks really good as is.
Congrats on the Player's Choice, my man. Any plans for what you'll do next, since these will be getting a break?

Awesome! I tend to cruise armyblogs for the pics, so did not realize you were doing an empire/ogre themed team armies until now, which makes it all even more impressive!
Great work!

Not yet, but we are working on that and better pics of our team army.

Thanks! The Warhammer idea came late and the first unit was already done. The unit of bulls that looks 'unconverted' actually does have some very subtle conversions. Each of the 'clubs' that they use is normally a left hand weapon. but I do agree the Warhammers would look much better in more units. Something for the future if I ever expand this army.
. On some of the NMM I think a last lighter highlight would make it pop and appear more metallic, but it looks really good as is.
This is a great suggestion and I will add it to my list of 'to do' for when I get back to these guys. Thanks!
Congrats on the Player's Choice, my man. Any plans for what you'll do next, since these will be getting a break?
Dark Elves will be next for me. A very heavily themed and converted army which I will be attempting to paint to much higher standards (*Though I may kick myself later for such aspirations...).
Thanks again all.

Delfs got assemlbed and some conversion done and I've lost interest.
I recently assembled a stock butcher, slapped some paint on it and took the army out to a 1250 tourney. I had a blast!!! I'm hoping the ogres are just what I need to enjoy WFB again in this current sea of cheese.
