Sharkbelly's Projects

original thread ↗

Now that my 5K Dogs of War army is finished, and since it seems that the DoW are falling out of fashion anyway, I am revisiting my ogre pirates. They can't take that army away from me! All in all, it clocks in at around 3000 pts.

I started a gnoblog a while back, but it fell into disrepair. Rather than threadomance it, I thought I'd start over.

First, the lord choices. You have already met this fellow:

He was the original leader of the gang, but further input seems to indicate that a tyrant should have a great weapon. To that end, I acquired one of the ltd. ed. bruisers, and have been working on him. He'll be up next.

I've added this fellow. I wanted a tyrant who carried a great weapon in addition to the one above. He's built from the limited edition bruiser, with a great weapon in place of the ironfist.

Very impressive, I like your theme
any chance of some picks of the DOW?
I love Gnomes...

any chance of some picks of the DOW?

Yup. You can find them here:

http://ogrestronghold.com/forum/index.php?topic=11080.0;topicseen
Here are the rest of the characters.

Runt serves as the cabin boy. (Bruiser with great weapon)

Kleggart is the ship's quartermaster. (Bruiser BSB)

Brunhilt is the ship's cook. (Butcher)
And now for the core units. I finally finished painting these gnoblars. Is it me, or does it take a lot of motivation to paint 25 models that end up being 52 points?

Here is a closer look at a few of them:

Here are the two ships I made for my ogres.

Okay, time to add a few more. Haven't gotten a lot done lately as I've been working on terrain for our fantasy tournament, but have gotten a few things done.

Hunter and his two dogs

4 Ironguts

2 more bulls, bringing me to a total of 8

I'm trying to come up with a scheme for their banner. I'm thinking the maw on one side and crossed ogre swords on the other.
Fantastic, can't wait to see the finished result :D

After all, painting 100 night goblins is something you do in the morning just before you are off to work.

And I think you missed a 0 when you wrote 11 armies. The correct nr should be 110 armies I would think, based on your painting speed.
Okay, I have a few more ready to go:

Whaler's Mates (Trappers)

Giant Rat (Gorger)
the rat gorger basicly maces sense! think about it! its a demon who lives underground.. just like rats!
I like to think of him hanging out in the hold of the ship, and then emerging when the fighting starts.
i have some ideas to improve your models! first of all you could start a big project of making a bigger ship what haves 2 layers and maby you could battle in it :D and the basing of the models should be the same plank on the ships cause there is no dirt and grass in the ships right? :) how about a giant ship with 10 leadbelchers on each side :) and make a new and cooler model called the pirate tyrant :) a big tyrant with pirate maneater parts and customized stuff on :) how does this sound?? crazy or totally cool or costy? :) well its all up to you if you have all the time and money.. the cheapest way is to use cardboard or real sticks to make the big sihp :)
Ooh, and maybe something like a Shark or Giant squid chained to a wagon pulled by Gnoblars, to show the army's skills at catching beasts.

maby a giant squid who throws sharks at enemy...

That would be epic!

For your gnoblar trappers what were the nets made from?
They are night goblin netter models. I replaced the heads with gnoblar ones.

Here are a few more.
4 Leadbelchers

3 Marine Trolls (Yhetees)

Slave Giant

Yay! Troll Power!

i would add a cannon to the giant .. and mapy a pirate hat.. and a gnoblar parrot thingy ;) ... finally a model what suits vyvyan.. a marine troll :D
ive got to say that you have great painting skills!
Just finished up the ship's surgeon (slaughtermaster)
[
Fabulous theme!  I love the Whaler's Mates, in fact you've done a great job with the whole army.  My only comment would be to blood up that Ship's Surgeon a bit more, perhaps make the blobs more like smears where he's wiped his hands, or perhaps a bit more splattery? The Gor-Rat is great too!

His name is Pikey. His name is Pikey too! Yep - Pikey! Pikey the Gnoblar...
I also love the theme and how every unit has a job on the ship, great army keep it up.

Finally finished! The last piece is the scraplauncher:

Scuba cool! model!! i like the chains :)

Looks like a big blob of greenstuff ^^
It is! The faceplate is a skeleton shield with a little more greenstuff, while the sides are from the 40K city terrain.

I'm in lub with the helmet..

&& the mouth of the cannon is niffty too ;)
lovin the scrappie/ scuba team..

how about a group shot of all the army.. plus boats.. just so we can see the pirate mayhem!
How about an leadbelcher with 2 cannon arms and a shark mask?
Nice army there matey love the scrap launcher.
Overtyrant of the WATERGULPERS!!!
Your Leadbelchers have a mexacan look to em!
Those are awesome.  I'm a new ogre player and was thinking of doing a pirate theme as well.

Yours puts any of my ideas to shame though. T_T

Great work, are you adding any more to it or keeping it at 3k?
Hey hey, you you, I don' like your gnoblar!
No no, no way, I think ya need a new one!
Hey hey, you you, I could be your gnoblar!
Na na na na na na na!
That's about it for now. I've got to finish the Empire army that spawned the dogs of war pirate army that spawned these guys...
Okay, I can't seem to ever be quite finished. I added an honest-to-goodness Hunter for my Whaler:

I'm working on a few plastic trolls to use instead of the old metal ones.
And here are the new river trolls (yhetees). I just liked the new models too much not to get some.

They came out quite nice. I think the sea weed could be a different color than the troll skill, but that is pretty minor.

Yeah, I might have to switch that seaweed.

Well, after much reflection on the gorger in the army, I have decided to swap it out. I was thinking about how it sneaks onto the board during the game and has killing blow. That got me thinking... about adding a ninja! Just picked up the ninja maneater, assembled the model, and did a few minor mods. I'll pst a pic once it's painted.
My new (counts as) gorger:

At last, the finished army--until the new book comes out!

Well, it's time to add a few of the new models and tune this army up for the new book.

I plan to add at least a firebelly and an ironblaster. The other new stuff I have hard time fitting into the pirate theme. Anyone have any ideas?
How about a land ship to act as either a Stonehorn or Thundertusk? Something like this:
http://www.forgeworld.co.uk/Warhammer/THE-EMPIRE/EMPIRE-MARIENBURG-CLASS-LAND-SHIP.html
I've thought about that. I have one already...
I played around with some of the bits from the ironblaster last night, and I think a landship with an ogre captain and a gnoblar crew will make a fine counts-as Stonehorn.
After digging around in the book for a bit, I have settled on the following list:

Tyrant
Slaughtermaster

BSB
Firebelly
Hunter
Butcher

5 Bulls with fists
5 Bulls with fists
5 Ironguts
36 Gnoblars

5 Leadbelchers
5 Maneaters
Gorger
2 Hunting Cats

Giant
Scraplauncher
Ironblaster

This being a pirate army, I have not chosen to add mournfang cav or one of the big beasties, although I might try modeling up a counts-as stonehorn with my landship.

The firebelly and ironblaster are new. I am also adding a butcher to use lore of death. Each of the ogre units has been increased by one. I'll post pics as I go.
Amazing, Mr. Sharkbelly! I am very envious of this army. To be honest, I had the exact same idea for one such, and I am glad I'm not the only one. I would venture to say, "great minds think alike," but I'm afraid it's a bit presumptuous given the awesomeness of these ogres.

Well, Mr. Sharkbelly, I'm about to start an ogre army with a pirate theme myself. I can only hope that they would turn out half as badass as yours. (I'll try though, haha.)

Mind if I ask you questions about conversions and modelling? I would greatly appreciate it.
Not at all.
The army now looks like this:

Tyrant
Slaughtermaster

BSB
Firebelly
Hunter
Butcher

10 Bulls with fists
7 Ironguts
36 Gnoblars

5 Leadbelchers
6 Maneaters
Gorger
2 Hunting Cats
3 River Trolls (Yhetees)

Giant
Scraplauncher
Ironblaster
Ciant Croc (Stonehorn)

This gives me a little room to change things around. I can only field up to 3500 at one time because of my core units, so I can't put it all out at once unless I leave all the magic items at home.

The new additions to the army are coming along, but in the meantime I've been inspired by Mr_Griz's pirate posts to do a giant crocodile as a stonehorn. Picked up a Schleich croc tonight and got to work. The base is done, complete with a cutout for the hunter to stand in. I'll posts some pics soon.
Here is the finished croc (stonehorn):

Awesome army Sharkbelly!  You did a fantastic job with the painting and conversions.
I've thought about that. I have one (EMPIRE-MARIENBURG-CLASS-LAND-SHIP) already...

Good idea with the huge croc. However, you might have players complaining that they can't draw line of sight to what should be a really tall mini.

In me younger days of bravin' the seas, a beastie that big was lookin' to make a meal outta me - so I took a swig o' grog and gave the devil a thump on the snout with the business end o' me club. Ended up makin' a meal outta him if ye catch me drift! :D
Aye, Lardgut, that's about how it went!

I built a few battering rams for the army to use in sieges.

Those are pretty cool, what did you make the logs from?

I have now finished painting the last few models in this army. As soon as I get them flocked, I'll put up pics.
Here we go:

36 Gnoblars w/ cmd.

Firebelly

5 Leadbelchers

Death Magic Butcher

Ironblaster

The Finished Army
what did you make the ships out of and how?
8th Edition Battles:
W-2 D-1 L-1

Death magic butcher = epic win!
My hood is my castle...
Thanks! The ships are made from Playmobil Pirate Dinghies. I might do one more large one if/when my kiddo gets done playing with it.

I think I'll touch up the skin tone on a few of the older ogres (too light) when I get the chance, as well as add a mangrove tree to the base of the giant croc to make it taller/easier to see.
I've also started working on a pirate village.

Sharkbelly, old mate, ye still got the most impressive Ogre Pirate collection around!

you must know of these...

The Mournefangs (Gator Divers) and Ironblaster (Gator Cannon) really look amazing there!!
Basically they all fit right into your theme.

Cheers,

I use GW figures exclusively. It's a habit I got into back when I played in GTs...

Anyway, here are the finished buildings for the village:

Having just wrapped up my Empire Marienburg army at a tidy 6000 points, I am now going to begin redoing some of my ogres. I have added another half dozen to the force, which will top out at 4000 points. I'll post updates as it comes along. I'm looking forward to having a painted 10K army together.
Mind if I ask where you got those buildings from?
TheDiceAbide.com - Same game, better attitude.
Aside from the fortified manor and the well, they come from Games of War.

http://www.gamesofwar.net/acatalog/Pirate_Supplies_Store.html

I've finished a few more buildings recently:

Also, this little fellow, a dwarf beer wagon:

Okay, first up on the redo list are my leadbelchers. I first painted them to be part of my Dogs of War army many years ago. I'm going to touch up the flesh tones, making them darker, as well as add one more along with a unit filler of gnoblars.
And here they are:

Along with a retouched scraplauncher:

and a unit of ironguts with a slaughtermaster:

Finished retouching my Tyrant, the infamous Pirate Captain Sharkbelly:

Also his banner bearer:

Here they are in a unit of bulls:
The rest of the retouching is coming along nicely, but I've suddenly begun working on my dwarf airship again:

Looking forward to seeing that airship finished for sure!!!  Armies looking real nice Mr.Sharkbelly!
Tozons Mountain Eaters!  Blog here
I finished touching up the ogres. Here is a picture of them with my 6K Empire Marienburg army. All together, it makes a nice tidy 10,000 points.

Well, I changed the balloon on top of the airship to a more roundish one. I like it a lot better this way. Also primed it.

I like it better that way too! Nice job and cool building!

wow...  :o

This ^^    :o

i missed this first time round, so...........

wow  :o  :>o  :o

That is one awesome army/ village/ port you have there! I wish i had as many ogres as that. 10,000pts? Nice, very nice! If i keep building my (infancy) army then maybe by 2020 i will have something like this, then my regular woody and Tomb King oponents can look out!  ;)

The rounded balloon is much better btw. I will be watching this from now on.  :)
I love the scraplauncher concept

Thanks! I've gotten a few more things done on the army. I added a grot orderly to the ship's surgeon (slaughtermaster).

Also, here are some pics of the retouched maneaters:

Just picked up a box of dragon ogres at my FLGS' annual sale, and I plan to use them as mournfang cav. I'm assembling them with a dose of ogre bits (heads and ironfists) and I'll get some WIP pics up soon.
Here they are!

I love the left-hand Maneater, in the bottom picture! It is literally the best maneater I have ever seen! :)

Enjoy your pet gnoblar :)
