Biteninjas Gnoblar Hordes! *Update*Second battle reports

original thread ↗

So this will bring my total current running Gnoblog count to 3, but I believe that this one will be the most frequently updated of the 3.
Starting a warbands campaign, and I decided it would be awesome to take Gnoblars Hordes for my list. It should be interesting considering 2 of the guys are doing the new Mortals list and maxing out what little models they have.
The start of my army will consist of old gnoblars from when I started 2 years ago, and new ones I'm painting now. I have repainted a lot of them, and I think a few of my Trappers are the only ones left to get redone, as you will notice by their bases and paint jobs.

Starting off, here is my Gnoblar Honcho that I made a few weeks ago. He's nothing to special, just a slightly luckier gnoblar with a big sword and helmet:

Here are most of my warriors. I still have to finish the second unit before the first warband game, but most of them are here. I currently have 30 painted, and another 90 sitting in the closet waiting for their time.

Next I have my Manbiters. Now I know their rules state that they have a flail, but my group is letting me use the Ogre club model.
Explanation: The gnoblars are carrying the ogre clubs of their former masters. Although it is heavy, if a gnoblar gains enough momentum (and doesn't trip!) it will be able to crash into enemy lines with astounding results. Unfortunately for the little git, he will be tired and swinging a weapon bigger than him can prove to be very difficult.

And here is one of my "gap filler" models I will be working on to make things easier and look nicer:

Next are my Trappers. Most of these have been converted from other, left over, models

The converted ones:

Here are my Flingers. The skull flinger in the front broke pretty much as soon as I took this picture, but you get the idea of how he looks. I'll have to fix him up as soon as I get some glue.

Here is my favourite unit, the Pigback riders! I converted a musician easily enough, and have almost finished the standard.

And finally I have the Head Honcho. He wont be used in the warbands, obviously, but I got too excited for this model. I only have the Rhinox finished, but here you go:

That's all for now. You can check out my Warbands starting list here:

I'll keep this gnoblog updated with progress, game results, new lists and possible fluff for the campaign.
All comments and suggestions are appreciated, as always ;)

So I should probably explain why my Gnoblars are red, and not green *ignores-fact-that-they-are-"greenskins"*
I'll explain it here in a brief re-cap of my Ogre tribe from years past.

Part One, the History of the Tribe of Red Wrath, and the birth of the Blood Bathers

Many far forgotten seasons ago, shortly before the coming of the Great Maw, there was a particular group of Ogre who were known for their ferocity, even among the other Ogres. Although these ogres were not always outwardly angry, and they contributed to the whole tribe like any other Ogre, it was almost hard to tell them apart from the other tribes and families. Until they got angry. They would get get enraged and furious to the point where their skin turned red, not just in the face, but all over. They would not back down for anything, and would smash their way through the problem or situation they were forced through. And thus they earned the name: Tribe of Red Wrath"

Such anger became intolerable among many other Ogres. To try to distance themselves from this tribe of berserker's, the other ogre tribes in the area attacked, and pushed their territory back, further toward Cathay. This act, however, was the first fall in the long spiral down for the Tribe of Red Wrath.

As the Tribe of Red Wrath re-grouped and prepared to push back into their former home, The Great Maw descended from the sky. It scattered the tribe even further into Cathay, and separated them from the Mountains of Mourn, blocking their way back. Enraged at yet another obstacle, the Tribe of Red Wrath released their anger on nearby villages and farm communities. They attacked out of anger, and not for any gain of wealth or food. The body count of the victems grew quickly, and the piles of dead were not unlike large hills. Taking the dead bodies, the tribe started a dark, sadistic ritual. They would drain the bodies of their victims, and gather their blood. The Ogres would take turns bathing in the literal pool of blood. By the end of their massacre in Cathay their bodies had been died permanently red. Remaining villages had heard the horror stories from survivors, they soon spoke of th ogres as "Blood Bathers." Overhearing these rumors from his spies, the Tyrant decided such a name was befitting, and thus the tribe was renamed: "The Blood Bathers Tribe."

Now the Tribe had regrouped in full force, and prepared to take their journey back home in the Mountains of Mourn. But they would face many obstacles on their way back, some larger than any man or army.

I hope you like it, I'll put up the rest and tie in my gnoblars in the next bit.

After all, painting 100 night goblins is something you do in the morning just before you are off to work.

And I think you missed a 0 when you wrote 11 armies. The correct nr should be 110 armies I would think, based on your painting speed.

I hope you like it, I'll put up the rest and tie in my gnoblars in the next bit.

Like it? I love it :D. Im looking forward to seeing how the head honcho turns out.

Love the red skin tones.  Its a nice break from the usual grey/green.

My Gnoblars are orange-sh brown.
A One that is not cold is scarcely a One at all.
Pretty nice  ;).

You need serious balls to do a gnoblar army and even more to pull it off well.

I like the trapper conversions, it's a similar thing that I did for my trappers, except that all of them are converted because I'm cheap and cheerful   ;).

Sorry for the lack of update, but I am having trouble getting on the site right now. I don't have any pics at the moment, but I shall post my battle reports for the games I had last week, Pictures will come later (tomorrow, with any luck)

Battle 1: Dwarfs

His List:
3 warriors, 5 rangers, 1 thane with great weapon

The gnoblars did great in their first battle. The two units of trappers got into a tussle with the thane, beat him in combat, then chased him down and killed him. The two units of fighters did what they were supposed to: charge, beat them with static combat resolution, and chase them down. So each fighter unit took out each of the dwarf units. I must say that these were the most cowardly dwarfs I had ever seen (rolling 11 and 12 for all the leadership tests).

Round 2: High Elves
10 spearmen with commander, 10 shadow warriors

This game was almost set up for my gnoblars. Each unit of trappers was able to sneak up behind and beside the shadow warriors, causing rear and flank charges before he got to fire a single arrow. The High elves did surprisingly well, however, and passed all their leadership tests and fought the trappers down to a single gnoblar. That lone gnoblar managed to finish off the shadow warriors, a definite candidate for the snarefinger position...
The spearmen fell into my trap, and charged a unit of fighters on a hill. Sharp stuff managed to take out 2 spearmen, but combat didn;t go as well. I still beat him with combat resolution, but the High Elves stuck every turn, and wittled my gnoblars down to nothing.
The spearmen turned just in time to see my other unit of fighters charge them in the flank. My lone trapper even jumped into battle and took out 2 of the remaining spearmen before they were run down!

Round 3: Warriors of Chaos
6 hounds, 16 marauders (hand weapon/shield), 5 marauder horsemen

I don't mean to brag, but this battle went well better than I had ever anticipated. On round 2 his hounds were charging 1 unit of fighters while the horsemen charged another on a hill. They both got shot at on their way in, the hounds losing half their unit and fleeing off the board! The horsemen lost 2 riders, but the other 3 fluffed all of their attacks and lost combat, but my goblars ran them down!
The unit of 16 marauders now faced my whole army by themselves. to their credit they took front/side/rear charges well (that's 8 static combat resolution for me if you're keeping count), rolling 2's and 3's to stick in combat and draw out their suffereing. But like the other armies, they were eventually over run and defeated. Only 5 gnoblars died! a new record!

Round 4: Dark Elves
1 unit of 10 corsairs with reaver, 3 units of 3 corsairs with handbows.

Things started off badly, as almost my whole army bickered the first two turns (I even used a re-roll or three, but still they bickered!) Thankfully he only shot 1 unit of trappers to bits. The other unit managed to take out one of the 3-man corsair units in a single round of shooting.
The 10 man unit charged a fighter unit, who managed to fell three of them in a hail of sharp stuff. Things looked grim as most of my front row was wiped out in the first turn, but the second turn of combat was too much for the corsairs, and they failed to hurt my gnoblars, then turned tail and fled. My gnoblars, the sprinters they are, over ran them as well.
My opponent gave up after that, saying his 6 corsairs couldn't win alone.

Round 5: Lizardmen
10 Saraus warriors with commander, a BIG unit of skinks

This was the toughest battle. The skinks managed to wipe out a unit of Trappers in a single round of shooting, and then ran circles around a unit of gnoblar fighters. The fighters managed to trap the skinks at the edge of the board and re-form into a single line, hailing sharp stuff on the skinks until they ran off the board.
The Saraus warriors were being bothered by my other unit of trappers following behind them, throwing sharp stuff, but nothing managed to hurt the Saraus. Eventually they chaged my other fighter unit (with hero) and killed enough to force me to run away! And off the board! The Saraus then turned to my other unit of fighters that had just finished off the skins, and charged at them. For the first time all game I managed to cause 1 of them to take an armour save, but he passed it and ran those fighters off the board as well. We called it a draw because my Trappers were running circles around them for the rest of the game, picking them off 1 by 1.

So that was the first week of warbands, next week we jump to 500 points, so I gotta start painting and thinking of what I'm going to add.
I'll post pics of my finished gnoblars and the final bit of my story the next time I can get on.

That was an awesome series of mini-battles :) Glad to hear the hordes are working out for you :) The twice I've used a gnoblar hordes list, they've performed awfully :( So, I'm very pleased that they work well for someone :)

Gnoblars do well in small battles, no one has the points available to get good combat resolution in such small games, but as we get bigger it is going to be hard for me to keep up. my ranks will mean less and I wont outnumber for long, I will have to turn to more tricksy tactics to win, such as using a bait unit and fleeing them, only to draw my opponent out for some flank charges (I love that largely insignificant rule!)
I'll work on a good 500 point list in the next few days, maybe tomorrow if I get the chance, but for now, the final part of my Gnoblars gaining independence!

Part Two: Dessert heat, Sand of Blood
The Blood Bathers tribe had traveled far in their quest back to their lost home, but they still remained lost. For years they had searched the globe, aided by other traveling ogres or the occasional bit of pocket coin for sword selling, but still they pressed on! Driven by determination, a "hunger" to see their ancestral lands once again. Nothing would stand in their way!
But something did get in their way. Large, vast, seemingly endless, the Blood Bathers tribe had come to the edge of a dessert unknown to them. After what seemed like weeks of death marching, the Tyrant of the Blood Bathers decided to set-up a temporary home around a decently large oasis they stumbles upon.
Many of the Bulls protested at sitting in one spot, they had traveled far and did not want this to become their permanent residence. But many of the tribesmen had died in the dessert, and the Tyrant did not want this to become their graveyard. He gathered almost all of the gnoblars together, leaving only enough to do all the menial tasks, and prepared the others for what was certain doom.
It became the gnoblars job to find the end of this dessert, or die trying. Knowing that the gnoblars were to stupid and disorganized to properly follow these orders, the Tyrant set-up a few of his best maneaters to keep the little gits in line.
The maneaters protested at the task of babysitting all of tiny greenskins, but the Tyrant explained their position: If they did not go then they were stay in the dessert. The other bulls would turn to the maneaters first to go explore for a way out, and eventually turn on them at the first chance. Faced with no choice, the maneaters accepted the task and prepared to leave.
One of the Rhinoxen was set up to carry supplies for the search party, and away they went.
The maneaters were fierce to the gnoblars. Despising their job at care taking them, the maneaters pushed the gnolars day and night, only stopping when the maneaters were ready for rest. Any disobedience or sign of lazyness was not tolerated, and would end with a maneater getting a nice, fresh meal. So it was no surprise that the gnoblars quickly found a leader to follow. Gnozy Underbite rallied the gnoblars in secret. When the first sign of escape from the dessert appeared over the horizon, Underbite screeched a battle cry, and the gnoblars turned on the maneaters. Unprepared for a mutiny, the maneaters were quickly overtaken and killed, their bodies were stripped of anything useful, and put in the supply caravan for later eating.
That night the gnoblars gathered much rest. They had a victory feast were the whole horde ate the maneater who led their slavers. When they cut open the ogres belly, a live gnoblar came out out of the stomach. Gril "Ribstikka" became an icon for surviving the maneaters wrath. Noticing how the other gnoblars praised Ribstikka hartened and worried Underbite. In an devious act, Underbite but of the dead maneaters head and placed it on a pike. He gave the icon to Ribstikka to carry to battle, and to rally the other gnoblars. But secretly, he knew that such an item would draw attention away from himself as he led, and if they encountered their former masters they would no doubt attack Ribstikka first.

The gnoblars rested well that night, and prepared the next morning to finally leave the dessert. They had entered a new world on their own, but what new enemies faced them?

Sorry for the lack of updates, I have been really busy to work, and it's hard to get 100 gnoblars together for a picture ;)
anyways, here is the Head Honcho I just finished up. I will probably add little details in his little "Rhinox Fort" up top, but he is pretty much done.
(P.S. part of the "Fort" broke off in the middle of me taking pictures)

Beautiful army. I love that you've managed to make all the units with only one model available (Manbiters, Flingers and Pigback Riders) without making them seem repetitive. The Manbiters look especially good.

The Rhinox with the Head Honcho on is wicked, and I love his "fort".

You've also got very nice fluff, and I love the part about the Head Honcho giving the Battle Standard Bearer to his rival in hope of him getting slain. :D

"Needs Moar Manowar"
I love the skin tone on them, it really is a difference from the usual but looks surprisingly good. Are you going to be using Blood Gnoblars? If so how will you show a diference between these and the rest of your army? I really like the additional bits of detail you have put on, especially the bird on the arm of the look out gnoblar model, I must admit Ive got about 3 of these and I had no idea what to do with them that wasnt pointing. Oh and your Head Honcho with the helmet under his arm is brilliant.

Keep posting those pics!
I have a dream that one day Gnoblars will be judged on the content of their trinket bags and not by the size of their nose or ears. I have a dream!

I shall call him Randy and he shall be my pet.

Thanks guys. I gotta go to a big shift at work, but I'll try to put up some pics of what I have finished tonight, and maybe some WIP, if my camera will stop taking huge pictures.

As for the blood gnoblars, nothing to worry about there, I find them pretty useless so I probably wont use them. They only seem good if you are using a scenario were you have to capture an objective. Very situational.

Nice Honcho so far. But a cavalry base? Not a monster base for the Rhinox? And where's the sword from?

The sword is from the High Elf Dragon kit. It's taller than he is.
As for the base size, the gnoblar Rhinox's don't count as monsters, they're supposed to be babies really. And all the photos in the white dwarf have cavalry bases. If I am wrong I will fix it, A white dwarf army usually isn't too well thought out.

So I had my second set of games yesterday, 2 500 point games. My list looked like this:
Honcho
  Flial
  Light armour/shield
  Red stone
2 units of 6 trappers
28 gnoblar fighters
   light armour/shield
   CMD
20 Fighters
20 Fighters
24 Manbiters
   CMD

That's 105 models there, whoo! Needless to say, I still outnumbered people.

Both games were agianst lizardmen players.

The First round was against the guy I faced last time, this time he beefed up his list with Cold One Riders and a Skink priest. Things looked a little bad in the beginning, one unit of trappers was blown up the the skink priests "Forked Lightning" right off the starting line. The Cold Ones thankfully failed a stupidity check on turn 2, preventing them from charging me, but the old Saurus unit he had charged my unit of manbiters, who managed to take 3 of them down and win combat.
A "sacrifice" unit of gnoblars charged the Cold Ones, managing to kill 1 but lose horribly and flee. Thankfully they escaped the Cold Ones wrath and rallied on their next turn. The skink priest and skink unit shot my manbites to pieces, what survived ran away for the next few turns. The Cold Ones eventually turned around and faced my unit of big unit Gnoblars with shields and Honcho in it. My gnoblars lost the first round, but stuck around to let the second unit of trappers get in on the flank and help scare them off, running into the fleeing-but-know-rallied manbiters!
With only his skinks left, the player conceded the game.

The second match was against an all skink list that I was worried about:
Skink Warchief
5 Chameleon Skinks
24 Skinks with javelins
24 skinks with blowpipes

This game was almost won with the set-up, and 1 unit of gnoblar fighters. My trappers got to go down before her skinks, so I took the best spot I could find to slow her down. Her chameleon skinks were still really close to my "sacrifice" unit of gnoblars. The gnoblars eventually charged the chameleon skinks and killed them all, overran into the unit of skinks with javelins, and won combat again (despite neither side actually wounding, she just rolled a really bad leadership test.) My gnoblars, being so speedy, then overran again into the third unit of skinks with warchief. There luck was at a stop when the warchief pummeled 3 gnoblars and forced them to run. unfortunaly for her, the skinks ended up with my manbites and big fighter unit on either side, waiting for a double flank charge. Needles to say, the skinks got squished in a "gnoblar sandwich" leaving her with nothing left on the field.

next set of games is 750 points, I might have to start putting bigger things in my army, as I am running out of gnoblars to build (and have even less time to paint them!) So my scraplauncher may take the field, as well as some goblin wolf riders to give me some (actually more) flanking power.
Sorry for my lack of pics, I haven't painted much and spend most of my time building these little gits (100 gnoblars is a lot to build in two days!).
