This Gnoblog is dedicated to my first 40k army. So far I have only played the fantasy side of the hobby (except Bomberz over da Sulphur River), but I've always been interested in Orks. So with the new Black Reach starterset I decided to finally start a 40k army. I really don't know the rules yet, so I could really use the help of the 40k veterans on this forum to help build my army. So far I bought a few sets of the Black Reach Ork Boys on Ebay, so I have a lot of boys to paint. But because these are still in the mail, I started to work on my Warboss, that I got from a friend. I really liked the idea of Cyborks, and I think I'll build a Mek/Painboy army. So this is my boss.
I got some inspiration from the best television series ever: Ducktales! The boss is obviously inspired by Gizmoduck. It still needs some Greenstuff work, but I really like the way it looks right now.
I also might add a villain from the serie to my army. The inventions of Gyro Gearloose just seem such nice inspiration for a Mek army ^^
So what do you guys think of my Boss? And do you have any suggestions for a small armylist?

Awesome boss conversion Not quite to my tastes, but that's cause it was such an incredible model anyways Nonetheless, a groovy conversion

After all, painting 100 night goblins is something you do in the morning just before you are off to work.
And I think you missed a 0 when you wrote 11 armies. The correct nr should be 110 armies I would think, based on your painting speed.

Nice conversion... always good to see the Gyro-Stabilised-Monowheel bought back to life... can't wait to see more of a haphazard ork Painboy/Mekanik army

Great boss, I'd love to see more of this army. Great inspiration to. I used to have a Darkwing Duck movie/vhs episode, which at that point was the most awesome thing I had ever seen. The genie Ducktales was also great.

My question is, where does the fuel pump go...?
Great conversion though. I remember that duck!

I finished painting my Warboss! I really like how it turned out, but the dark colours are really hard to photograph.. :/
I also started to convert the next unit in my army, a Deffdredd. It's an old plastic Epic 40k Gargant (I think..) with some conversion work. There still a lot of stuff to do before it's finished.
Also, I was thinking about adding some snow to the bases. What do you guys think?

how did you paint him? i like that scheme

bas_231229 Sep 2008
The skin was really easy. Orkhide shade as basecoat. Catachan Green drybrush. Thraka Green wash. Devlan Mud wash. Catachan Green drybrush.
It's really quick and easy, so I think I'll use this same method on my Ork boys. Maybe with Goblin green instead of Catachan green for a brighter skintone.

I like the look of the skin. I'm not a huge fan of the rest of the model, because it looks unfinished (it looks like you dry brushed bolt gun metal over the black primer coat), but you said the dark bits (pretty much the whole thing) didn't photo graph well.

I agree with you Reg. I love the skin tone and the upper lip color... it has a so-real look to it. Just like Reg, I also believe the gun, power klaw, wheel leg, straps could use some more color.
But, I must say the model looks good anyways. I can't wait to see your Deffdread conversion.

Yeah it does look a little muddled on the second half. Maybe consider adding some more highlights or a few details to make it less gray?

I quite like the whole dark aesthetic to the model The darkness on the lower half seems fine, but could do with a few highlights, as suggested by Randroid

The darkness on the lower half is mainly because of bad lighting
I tried to get a better pic, but it's still too dark..
And the first 5 boys of my army. Nothing fancy, just nice and easy.
I don't really like the way the metal looks, so I'm going to have to work on that. I'm also still thinking of adding snow to the bases. What do you think?

Reg0602 Oct 2008
That is much better. However, now it needs more colors, especially on the klaw. Put some danger stripes on there, and paint parts in different colors of metal (copper, shinier steel).
As for not liking the metal, I can see that. One could say it looks like you drybrushed a thin layer of boltgun metal over the black primer. Maybe put down a thicker/lighter coat of metal first? What is your recipe by the way?

I don't work as fast as you
Still working on the next 5 Shoota boys.. but I have a lot of work to do for university.. so it might take a while :p
This will be my 1000 pts army, maybe you can rate it? I'm no 40k expert, so I guess it's not the greatest armylist ever ^^

Because I've almost finished the painting on my Shoota Boys, I started to convert some Cyborks from the Black Reach Nobz.

They still need some (/a lot of) Greenstuff, but I really like the way these guys are turning out!

Great looking cyborks, those are some of my favorite models to make, simply because of how awesome/ridiculous things can be (seriously, a targeting reticule on the face? that doesn't help, at all, and we all it isn't linked to the gun or anything- it's just pure orky magic).

I build the basic structure for the arms, but something feels wrong. Is the Gun arm too small, or is the Lifta Droppa too big?

Reg0618 Nov 2008
The LiftaDroppa is just fine, it's just that your guns are too small. And with a big gargant like this, don't miss the chance to do some nice thick barrels on the guns, they look good and orky.

I still have to do all the rivets :'(
And I really don't know what to do with the shoulders. Add armourplates like the rest of his body, or build some kind of fancy gun emplacement.
And above all, I still have some Death Korps models I need to paint.. and they're looking very interesting right now..

6 Burnas
6 Lootas +2 Meks
I advise to change this into 12 Lootas (or if your current list is 995 or less, drop the Gretchins and field unit of 15 Lootas), since both Burnas and Lootas are most effective in big units, especially Lootas, who when in big numbers can shred any infantry with 4+ or worse AS to pieces and even Marines and others MEQs will think twice before going into open because with 5th ed rules their expensive power-fist sergeants and special weapon models will be forced to takes bunch of saves, resulting in Orkish sniping, and easily destroy any vehicle with AV of 12 or less and pose serious threat to AV 13.
I found Burnas are only effective in units of ~15 and in Battlewagon to get into action quickly. ~80 flamer hits are nothing to laugh at even for Spess Mahrheens (of course this is too expensive for 1000 army).

i am loving this army it reminds me of borderlands
