Gnoblog - Mortals Army of Malal

original thread ↗

With Warriors of chaos looming overhead this November, it has given me the push I needed to start my themed chaos army: Malal.
Now I am taking time with this army, I have two other army projects on the go, so my updates may be sporadic, but I will update as soon as have made progress.
For those of you that don't know, Malal is the long forgotten 5th Chaos God, the God of Self-destruction. Long ago he was mistreated by his brothers, and left them. He gathers forces from those who have been attacked or hurt in some way by the other Chaos Gods.
I'm sure you could Wikipedia or Google him for more information if you are interested.

I am in the creation process of this army, still coming up with ideas for a good themed list, plenty of conversions,  and the paint scheme itself is still being played with (I found out that simple black and white isn't actually that simple).

What I was thinking of in terms of army lists revolves around the idea of many weak, sacrifice units with a few, strong units (not min-maxing, it goes with Malal fluff that many of his followers are weak and die, but a few rise to be great)
Anyways, Here is what I have done so far:

I got the Harry the Hammerer model and had no idea of what to do for it, so for fun I painted him up in the Malal theme. I still need to finish the base and some details. This is the general scheme for my army.

Next I picked up the small warriors box of three models to do some test work. I have come up with some basic patterns for these foot troops. I still need to get marauders and work on them, seeing as they will fill most of my army.

Finally, I have the center piece of my army, GARLAUCH! actually, I'm just doing work on the two headed dragon to fit with the theme of black and white/ two faced/ etc. He is far from being done as I need to work on his split faces (facial reconstruction surgery!) and make sure he isn't too much like garlauch, and rather my own, independent two headed dragon!

I also have work on a giant, but not much had been done to him yet, but I'll post as soon as I have some progress.
Comments and tips welcome!

EDIT: Fixed the images finally!

Hard to see with the pics but it looks good so far, a full army would look damn impressive... though i think i hear Wildcard sobbing at the thought of another Black/White mix colour scheme
Took me 2 weeks to realise i have a trade gnoblar, Squinky ->

you're a sick man stone dog   excellent idea!
Well I checked the pictures, when I uploaded them on the computer they were a proper size, but my image host (photobucket) they appear tiny, and the wont let me resize them larger.

After all, painting 100 night goblins is something you do in the morning just before you are off to work.

And I think you missed a 0 when you wrote 11 armies. The correct nr should be 110 armies I would think, based on your painting speed.
What I can see looks very good. The pictures are small, so there isn't much I can make out other than a general scheme.

If by RAW, you mean "Reg06's Audacious Whims", then you'd be right.

I've changed the settings on my camera 3 times, it's not the camera that's making them small, it appears fine on my computer, so it's not my photo uploader, it's when I put it on photo bucket.
Actually, I fixed that too, now it shrinks them when I post the link on here. I just resized them on photobucket but they are still small in the forums. Anyone else having this problem?
EDIT: found the problem, photobucket has this tiny icon that says "auto resize uploaded image" to a really small size. I just had to chanfe it and wait.

I heard a while back that the mortals will be able to field trolls as core if they take a certain character? Is this confirmed? Do we know if the character is a hero or a core choice?

I like the model alot, but how exactly do you concieve of Malal looking units? Will there be something connecting them in addition to the black/white colour scheme?

Well for monster like units (Giant, dragon, etc.) I'm giving them "broken chains" to represent that they were once prisoners to the dark gods, but are now free.
As for the human units, Marauders will have warpaint, and different units will have different warpaint depending on their fluff history (more white if they were saved by Malal and fight for him, more black if they are just after revenge). Not 100% sure about the warriors though.

Another thing that I am debating on: There is argument on this, but some say that Malal has his own daemons (like how slaanesh has daemonettes, khorn has bloodletters, etc.) that are like lizards or crocodiles that stand on two feet. The obvious model choice for this is lizardmen models. I'm thinking of taking some of them and have them as a "count as" unit of chosen warriors.

That would indeed be interesting, especially if you keep to the black/white theme, as most lizardmen are painted turquois or green.

It's been awhile, I've been bogged down with other projects, 3 jobs and stuff just not going my way. But I finally have a little more for you, I've finished building Galrauch (I shall rename him later) and started painting him. I didn't realize it until I had the paintbrush in my hand, this is a difficult model, it may be way to advanced for me. But I got to get better by challenging myself.

Anyways, Here is the wingspan, and I hope to have him finished this weekend:

Good luck with the paint scheme - you seem to be enjoying it! :)

I'm not sure if I should be surprised, disappointed, or proud of myself. I've done most of the model in near record time, but it's mostly been drybrushed. I think it looks good (compared to how "super great" I normally DON'T paint).
But I have come to an impasse, as you will see from the pics below.
I realized near the end I had a great "Sin City" theme going (I'm sure Frank Miller wasn't the first to come up with the concept, but it's one of the most well known).
The black, white, and red work well together, but I still have to paint all the horns and chains I added. I'm wondering if I should take this new "look" I discovered and apply it to my army, or should I go ahead and bleach bone the spikes, metal on the chains.

any comments/ suggestions always help!

that dragon looks very nice; I especially like the red glowing eyes.

The simple black/white/red looks very striking, I look forward to more
I love Gnomes...

... Dead Gnomes
Finished this morning, so here we go.
I'm going to try to stick with the Black/white/red scheme for the whole army (Harry doesn't count, can't play with him on that base anyways). This army will be taken slowly, as my friends are starting Warbands and I'm actually going to start a gnoblar hordes list (you'll see a gnoblog for that once I have my first 200 points)

anyways, here's Galrauch!

"i dont do small armies"

Wow, very nice job biteninja. I am very surprised by how well this came out- not to say Harry was painted poorly, but this is leaps and bounds ahead of that.

I've always liked this model, but always hated the paint jobs :| This, however, turns that all around :) Great job, and really cannot wait for this army to take proper form :)

Alright. It's been awhile, sorry, I only got 1 unit done, but have started another. So here are plenty of pictures of my Marauder Horsemen. This was my first time doing skin Black/White, please tell me what you think,
Also, I'm still trying to think of my 3rd "standout" colour for this unit. I was thinking red again, for the eyes of everything. Any suggestions?

And here is a sneak peak at one of my Chaos Knights, maybe half finished:

Wow! last picture is a bit blurry.

They look good, I suggest, that you make the skins highlights up to mid grey ( codex grey or something like that)
That makes the armour more shiny(because of the white used for that) and it makes the model somewhat more at ease.

I like the painting though and I always wanted to start a black and white army, but never dared.

Now all we need is the 7th edition rule that said if the models are killed they don't get to fight and we WOULD be a broken army! lol
