Ogre Kingdoms pre-release rumours that weren't true

by Hragged

Before any of us managed to sneak a look at the Ogre Kingdoms army book, there were several rumours flying around that were well accepted as fact but turned out to be complete fiction. Whether or not any of these rumours were true at some point during the development cycle is unknown, but I thought it would be interesting to take a moment and look back at the things some people took for truth. I've scoured the forum archives and I've come up with a list of my favourites.
Enjoy!

All Ogres are on 25mm bases
This rumour came about when the first pics of the Ogre Kingdoms mini range were leaked. The Ogre pictured was on a base proportionally smaller than usual for an Ogre, but it was quickly suggested by most sane folk that this was either a mini still in it's 3-up stage and so all base proportions couldn't be taken for granted, or the mini was simply glued to the wrong base.

All ranks in a Gnoblar unit may shoot with their slings, not just the first rank
Wishful thinking on our part I think, and perhaps a little bit of confusion over how slings work. However, this was always a little too good to be true for only 2 points each (at least that's what I thought anyway). Imagine these guys with double shots with their slings if you will - a unit of twenty could've gotten 40 shots while also being 5 ranks deep, and still a steal at only 40 points for the whole unit. Ay carumba !

Giants are a Special choice and come in units (3 plastic Giants per box)
I didn't believe it back when I first heard it, but it's a perfect example of a rumour with completely no basis in fact anyways so it is worthy of this article. I mean, where do people hear this kind of thing? I know what you're thinking - it was that dodgy friend of a friend of a Games Workshop store employee who spilt the beans wasn't it?

Ogre characters can pick their magic items from any Warhammer army book
A crazy rumour based on an overblown fact. It was leaked that the Ogres would have access to items stolen/acquired from other races. Some people in a whirlwind of excitement took this too far obviously, as we all thankfully now know what it really meant was that the magic items that appear in the Ogre army book are mostly scavenged items according to the fluff, but are all unique to the Ogres (except of course the usual common items).

Ogre units don't get rank bonuses
I think everyone believed this rumour at some point, it was only when some people did get glimpses of the army book that this was thrown into doubt. People claimed that they couldn't find this rule anywhere in the book, but still some of us thought they must have missed it. Madness!

The Hunter can 'harpoon' large targets and drag them across the battlefield towards him
OK, I'll admit it - this made me want to get a Hunter. It was a nice idea, but at the time I was seeing lots of possible rules problems arising from it e.g. what happens if a friend or enemy unit gets in the way?
The only reason I would get one now is for his cats, but other wise I'm sticking to my Tyrant and 2 Butchers combo thanks very much!

There will Gnoblar Hyena riders (fast cavalry unit)
Honestly, where did this one spring from? There was nothing mentioned in any info leaks about these guys, and we never saw any pics or any concept sketches. Is temporary delusion to blame? Maybe someone had a dream about it and thought it was real when they woke up?
Well whatever it was and with no reason to doubt this fun sounding unit, the belief in this one spread for a while. In fact, I'd really have liked this rumour to be true - who doesn't like the idea of fast cavalry in the Ogre Kingdoms army?

Ogre Kingdoms are broken/overpowered/unbeatable!!!
If you believed this you'll believe anything.

Finally, if you created any of these rumours - be ashamed. However, I'd like to thank you for making this article possible. Cheers!
